Hotel Solara

My sister and I were delighted by this tiny hotel- it was everything it claimed to be. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, the rooms were basic but clean and comfortable and the views from the terrace were wonderful. There is no bar or restaurant but the hotel is surrounded an amazing choice of places to eat, drink or snack....within seconds of leaving the front door. Stayed here 3 nights in a single room - it is OK but I am not really used to 2 star so shall we say it was a "different experience" for me! On the plus side it was perfectly clean and a place to sleep, the room was fairly quiet although you do get noise from the pedestrian area below if you leave the window open, the staff were really pleasant, the balcony was nice to sit out on and the beds were actually proper sprung matresses, not those horrid foam things the french seem to favour. We stayed for three nights. The hotel was easy to find in a couple of minutes from getting off the airport bus at the Congres stop on the Promenade des Anglais (and going back on the Airport bus from the Gustav stop even easier and closer to the hotel). Slightly eccentric entrance, even more eccentric lift to the 4th floor. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Not "posh" but very satisfactory. A little apprehensive when first saw the entrance (door with plywood infill for glass - (later explained to us that hotel was waiting on door replacement). Location could not be better - very central. We stayed there for two nights and viewed it as as "a place to lay our heads" while we visited Nice and Monaco (which is very accessable via bus or other means). I booked the quadruple room which was a double bedroom with a small fridge, french doors opening onto shuttered ledge (not large enough to sit on but to get the atmosphere from the buzzing street below) and a small but very clean bathroom (shower) and another separate room with 2 single beds a table & 2 chairs and another set of french doors which opened over the street below. This was perfect for the kids (4yrs and 18months) to stay in the bedroom and my mother & I to stay in the other room - almost a suite as you are entirely separate.... more

Hotel Solara is a small, non-smoking, two-star hotel situated on Rue de France, one of the busiest pedestrian streets in central Nice. The location cannot be beaten, it's literally in the middle of everything with shops, restaurants, cafés and bars directly outside your doorstep. La Vieille Ville, the Old Town, is only a 7-10 minute walk away and offers uncountable restaurants and shops. The first impression was a bit strange: you reach the hotel on the 4th floor with a tiny lift. But then we were very pleased when we saw the accomodation! The friendly staff made us feel good, and made our stay very nice, doing everything necessary. The room was a little tiny, but comfortable. The cleanliness was above critics. Finally, the best: we enjoyed a lot the view from the balcony on the pedestrian area! We would definitely recommend this place!!

I stayed at this "hotel" for 3 nights and it was the worst experience I have ever endured. There were BED BUGS in my matress and I was literally bitten alive and was covered with bites. It took almost 1 month for them to go away. I tried to explain to the reception staff that they had bed bugs, but they refused to believe me or help me. To make matters worse, the walls of the rooms are paper thin, and we had to listen to a couple having loud sex all night/morning in the room next to us. It was revolting. I've stayed here several times--ever since the days when the Solara was a best-value pick with an asterisk in Frommers. The terrace rooms overlooking the colorful murmur of the pedestrian zone, with views over rooftops to the mountains are rare and remarkable. To sit out on the balcony like that at 2* prices is like nothing else for budget travellers in central Europe, period, and it adds a vivid, sensual dimension to a stay in Nice till late in the evening (and early in the morning). The taxi driver at the airport had never heard of the hotel Solara, which was worrying. We were even more worried when we arrived to find a front door, a doorbell and no obvious hotel. And scared stiff when we saw the lift was shaky and old and held only two people. Just. But when when we reached the fourth floor, we were pleased to find pleasant staff, a spotless room and bathroom, comfortable bed, a fridge and a delightful balcony, on which we breakfasted each morning (breakfast brought up on a tray by monsieur)..
