THIS is NOT a 3STAR hotel. Food very poor standard always cold. At breakfast you would have left over veg and potatoes. Very repatative meals. Had to pay 150 euros to have a sea veiw. Rooms very clean but no kettle, hair dryer. Pool to small only 50 sunbeds, and they where... more

I have just returned from a week at the Barcelo Hamilton Es Castille. My partner and 10 month old son were looking forward to the break. The hotel is small some 160 rooms. The rooms are dated, the beds uncomfortable, these were twin beds which were more camp beds. The cot was... more

Not enough staff in dining room, when busy they ran out of cups and glasses. Good food, but they could do with more variation. Hard to get a table when full. Generally clean. Wet mattresses on sunloungers which are left out in the rain. No hairdryers in room or fridge. No... more

mixed feelings
We stayed at the Hamilton over the last few days of May and beginning of June, and even though the hotel gradually grew on us, initially we could not help but feel somewhat disappointed. The whole place looks bland and dated, especially the rooms. Ours featured badly worn out 70s furniture, two flimsy single beds pushed together, and an ancient TV set that would not work. There was no mini fridge to store drinks, a poor trick to encourage guests to get water from the vending machine at the end of the corridor, we thought. Having said that, the room was spacious, bright and airy, and the views over the bay were certainly worth the supplement. Watching huge cruise liners pass by on their way to and from the capital’s harbour from our balcony was definitely one of the highlights of our stay. The hotel is located in Es Castell, a sleepy (some would say dead boring) little fishing village just outside the island’s capital. Probably not everybody’s idea of the perfect tourist resort, but we loved the location. The quaint little harbour, lined with seafood restaurants, is just around the corner from the hotel. We thought this is what the whole of Menorca must have been like at some point long before the arrival of mass tourism. If you are looking for a lively, happening type of place, or a beach within walking distance, then Es Castell is definitely not for you. We were on a half board basis and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Definitely something to look forward to first thing in the morning, and late in the evening after a busy day sightseeing around the island. The buffets were varied enough to satisfy every possible taste, even vegetarian, and while it is true that some dishes were not exactly piping hot, a chef was always present to cook a selection of fresh food on request. We never felt we had to dine out. One of our biggest disappointments was the pool area, planted in some sort of inner courtyard, too small, almost claustrophobic. To us the place just failed to feel inviting, apart from the fact that the very few sun loungers available were invariably taken first thing in the morning by the most eager sunbathers. We decided to give it a miss. Service was generally good, and even though many members of the staff really struggled with their English, most were friendly and helpful. One piece of warning though, for some reason or other the hotel seems particularly popular with older guests, most of them British OAPs booked through SAGA. This did not bother us at all. In fact we preferred the company of elderly people to a hotel full of families with screaming babies and young children Menorca seems to be swarmed with.
Good Hotel for the over 50's
Stayed in the Barcello Hamilton Hotel in June 2006, it was above average for a 3 star hotel. The food was excellent and the rooms good although worth paying for a harbourside view. This hotel would suit the over 50s nothing for young people and certainly not many facilities for children. The pool was small but adequate with a juccuzzi but if you want to sunbathe on loungers all day this is not the place for you, plenty of tables and chairs but not loungers, all taken by towels that are obviously holidaying on their own!!! A 20 minute walk to the capital Mahon which was beautifuly, lots of historic sites but no beaches at this end of Minoraca. Es Castell is an old town which is having a lot of careful renovation work done to it, no high rise and a beautiful harbour. If you want peace and tranquility and like historic sites this could be the place for you.
Great for a short break
Stayed at the Barcelo Hamilton Hotel for 4 nights in June 06 booked through Expedia. The Hotel is situated overlooking a beautiful harbour where you may be lucky enough to see one of the huge cruise ships pass by on there way to Mahon! Just around the corner from the Hotel is Cales Fonts, a lovely little bay with a few bars, restaurants, shops. Perfect for a stroll after your meal. You can also swap your evening meal to a lunch giving you the option of dining out which was nice. The entertainment at the Hotel was poor but isn't it always. Food was good, a lot of choice if your into Salads! Breakfast buffet was more than ample. The Hotel pool is small and as usual beds were reserved with towels by 8.30am most mornings! The bus into Mahon is ideal at 1.25 euros. Takes about 20 minutes and is well worth it. You can walk it in an hour which is a nice walk on a cooler day! We went into Mahon twice as there is a lot to see and I would definietly return. The Yacht club is also worth a visit (about 5 minutes in a taxi) where there are more resturants and the Casino. The Yachts are amazing! You can also walk along the front to Mahon from there. Es Castell did not have much to offer, a small square and a market twice a week. The Hotel is ideal for all but children would be bored I think. Menorca is a small island and the other side is easily accessible by bus from Mahon. You can also get the bus to/from the airport via Mahon at a total of around 2.50 euros. A taxi to the Hotel from the airport was 15 euros. All in all we enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo Hamilton, yes its quiet but I would not say that was a down side, there are enough things to do if your willing to take a short journey. A lot of guests seem to return and I would not hesitate to stay there again to explore the beautiful island. Feel free to email questions.
Good location
Very nice location and views. Just in front of the entrance of the port of Mahon and near good and cheap seafood restaurants. The hotel is a bit old but the staff is very friendly. Marina at the reception was very helpful. The food is OK but could be better.
loved hotel & es castell
it was our first trip to menorca so didnt no what to expect, the hamilton is a great hotel we liked everything about it,even thought there was only about twelve english people staying there.the view was brill although we didnt have a sea view,we used the local buses to mahon which were great & on time.will definatley return to the hamilton in the future.
Lovely Views
Stayed at the Barcelo in Oct 2005. Very quite hotel emailed them to upgrade to a sea view before arrival they confirmed this can be done on arrival. When we arrived their was no rooms with sea view all taken by tour company. These are some problem we found at the Barcelo, They do not turn the air conditioning on, Swimming Pool has no heater, Beach has gone since last May in the storm, Gym etc was not open due to the machines not working, Food was plentyful but only warm not hot. The local bus service was superb on time and clean and cheap, by the way the chap in the restaurant still does not smile. Very safe to walk at night
I put on half a stone
What was good. 1. The very friendly and helpful staff. 2. Very good food (a bit too good for my waistline). 3. The weekends when local people use the hotel facilities to celebrate wedding receptions, aniverseries etc., so that you dont have to go looking for local colour, it comes to you! 4. As you sit eating your food in the restaurant you may notice enourmous ships passing by, (its hard not to). 5. The island itself, take the trouble to go off and explore, its wonderful! Dont be put off by signs saying private or no entry in minorcan. You dont understand do you? So much lovely countryside and wildlife, ancient sites etc. if you are bold enough to explore. No-one is going to shoot you! 6. We went on a SAGA holiday to the hotel for a month and met the most wonderful fellow guests and made lots of friends. Now the down side. Not very much. 1. The sound proofing in the rooms was not great. 2. One member of the staff was a bit grumpy, (one out of about 60 I should think), I wont say who it was but you will know yourself after one day if you stay there, nothing serious though I expect it is just their way.
hotel in beautiful spot for views.
We went to the Hamilton June 2005. It is a lovely hotel in a lovely spot, overlooking the bay that leads to Mahon port, which meant we saw enormous ships going past the hotel on their way to the port, it was fascinating. The hotel is very clean, the double rooms were a good size, food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The discription of the hotel says it is 800mtrs from the nearest beach, we found this beach, it is a tiny rocky bay, no sand, but you can swim from it, so I think this is a bit misleading. Es Castell is a lovely small menorcan town, with shops dotted here and there. It is a 10 minute walk to the local bus to go to Mahon, which is 15 mins away, and worth a visit. A 10 minute walk takes you to a small port around the corner from the hotel, where there are a lot of restaurants and some shops. It is a lovely peaceful quiet area, more suited to couples and older people than families. I will go again with pleasure.
Loved the Bay
My wife and I enjoyed this hotel. We plan to return this year to celebrate our 24th this December. The view of passing ships so close to the hotel along with excellent food and service makes this hotel a comeback destination.
Just fab
Just back from Es Castel in Menorca, staying in the Barcelo Hamilton. Es Castel is very quiet, but peaceful. Hiring a car is easy and the best way to see the island. The Barcelo Hamilton, in my opinion was first class, nothing was too much bother to the staff and the food was excellent.
