Very friendly reception staff but...
7 / 10
Mar 2006, Mrs A Richardson

Very friendly reception staff but hotel is only average 3 star and I would agree with other comments about the dining room being extremely busy and replenishments of some of the favourite dishes often slow to arrive.
Also the food was not always particularly hot. The chef in the show cooking area was particularly surly and none of the dining room staff did the hotel a service. The hotel is well placed so long as you don't intend to hire a car as parking in Es Castell is a nightmare! The hotel definitely caters for the more mature guest.
The evening entertainment though not to our taste was nevertheless popular with the majority of guests. A basic hotel but I have stayed at the Rey Carlos III and the Agammenon and found these both to be superior.

We visited Mahon in September 2005...
8 / 10
Jan 2006, David Moyes

We visited Mahon in September 2005 staying at the Hotel Hamilton Barcelo with Direct Holidays.
The hotel is excellent with a slant towards the "older" customer. The food and quality of accommodation could not be faulted though the dining room did become very crowded at peak periods. The area of Es Castell has all the amenities you could wish for, together with a frequent bus service to Mahon and ongoing connections to other parts of the island.
The only down side to our holiday was the service provided by Direct Holidays. In our time there we saw no sign of a representative and our flight times both inward and outward were subject to changes. The failures of Direct Holidays were taken up by us on return and we remained unimpressed by their lack of concern.
Having said this we had a very enjoyable stay and would highly recommend the hotel to other holiday makers as it has a beautiful outlook and the charm of watching liners and ferries pass by as you sit enjoying breakfast in the dining room.

We stayed at the Hamilton in June...

Jun 2005, Mrs K Anderson

We stayed at the Hamilton in June 2005, it is a comfortable hotel, very clean and most of the rooms have a sea view.
The reception staff are very friendly, especially Oscar! but I think the dining room staff needed to smile more, although they were very busy.
The food was very good, lots to choose from at all meals.
The hotel overlooks a stretch of sea that is the entrance to the port of Mahon, so we saw giant ferries on their way to Majorca, huge cargo ships, and a luxury cruise liner, go right past the hotel, it was fascinating.
The hotel description says it is 800 metres from a beach. We found this "beach" and found a very small bay, no sand but plenty of rocks to sit on, you could walk into the sea and swim though, so I think this is a bit misleading.
Es Castell is a lovely quiet town with a few shops dotted here and there. It is a 10 min walk from the hotel to get the local bus to Mahon, which is 15 mins away, and worth a visit.
Around the area of the hotel you come to a small port, with lots of restaurants and a few shops, and lots of sailing boats docked, you can get a glass bottom boat ride from here.
The whole area is so peaceful, and very Menorcan, and not very touristy. I would say it would be better for couples and older people, not much there for children.
We will certainly go again.

Superb Location overlooking Mahon...

Superb Location overlooking Mahon Harbour Approach - Fabulous Views and opportunity to observe busy boats - working boats up to luxury criuses. Hotel food first Class. Bit of bias towards the more mature but escape is at hand with Es Castell Harbour with lively bars serving good drink with fantastic atmosphere - tried to rebook for September 2004 - but too late - Now got 2 weeks in June 2005 with Eclipse - cant wait. My wife and I thoroughly approve - well done
