Ahotels Piolets & Spa

My husband and I were quite disappointed with this hotel and did not feel it was up to 4 star standard. Although the room we had was clean and comfortable, we experienced lots of problems during our 2 week stay. The room lock was faulty and we were often locked out, sometimes for several hours until it was fixed. Building work nearby kept us awake an entire night. My husband, son, daughter and I stayed at the Hotel Piolets (not the Park and Spa) for a week in January 2006. We stayed there again at the same time last year. In 2005 we had rooms with windows as small as postage stamps so this year we paid supplements for balconies and mountain view but we got caught again as the 3 rooms were on the 1st floor over the bar with the subsequent nightly noise. Readers of these website reviews and links should be aware that they contain a lot of confusion between the two Piolets hotels in Soldeu. Both are owned by the same hotel group, there is the "Hotel Piolets" which is in the centre of Soldeu right next to the main gondola and there is the "Hotel Piolet Park and Spa" which is around 300 metres down the road towards El Tartar. We've all heard the phrase "location, location. location" but that just is not enough for a good hotel stay. Granted this place is convenient for the skiing, which was very enjoyable but the hotel was a big disappointment. We were there for a week in a big group and no-one enjoyed their stay. A combination of room breakins, staff who seemed to enjoy not trying to communicate, awful food and attempts to charge for things like the swimming pool repeatedly made this a Fawlty Towers experience in a wonderful place. My Husband and I stayed at this Hotel in Jan 2006. The location is excellent very near the Gondola, we found the hotel was fine and had no problems until we were checking out, when we found that we had to pay for the Hotel again!!. We already had booked and paid for this Hotel on the website Hotels, we had an email receipt from Hotels to say it was prepaid but the Hotel Piolets insisted that they had not received any money from Hotels and we would have to pay again. BEWARE, the are TWO piolets hotels in Soldeu. One is called piolets and spa, this is sited about 10mins down the road but is attached to the village. The other is called "Piolets", run by the same company and is sited next door (1 min walk) from gondola. This is where i have just stayed. Room was small, and suffered a little from street noise as it overlooked the main road, no tea/coffee facilities and you do have to pay extra for the safe. Congratulations to the Piolets for really turning things around. Having read last years reviews we almost switched to another hotel at the last minute. Thankfully, we didn't. No need to worry about the food on offer. The hotel have certainly got their act together if last years reviews are to be believed. Great hot and cold buffet with a terriffic selection and a particularly good range of fish/shellfish. To be fare, buffet food is never that hot....if you like your food piping, get there when the restuarant opens or don't go to a hotel... more

We stayed at the Hotel Piolets towards the end of the season and an excellent holiday (with loads of fresh snow). After having booked the holiday we came across a few mixed reviews on the web and considered cancelling, but in the end had a brilliant time. The hotel is a short stroll from the main gondola (practically next door) and our room was a large, well presented, clean and quiet. In my opinion the Hotel Piolets was excellent. Centrally Located you could not ask for better. The food in my opinion and the opinion of our group was beautiful and we are picky eaters. The rooms were beautiful and reception staff most helpful. I would highly reccomend it and would return.

We had a very enjoyable ski holiday but the Hotel Piolets was in our opinion truly dreadful in almost every respect. I find it hard to cite one redeeming feature. It is close to the gondola station but then so are quite a lot of other hotels.In short, the Piolets does not even deserve a rating. The food is inedible and thus you end up spending a lot each day on eating out. The rooms are poor as well - there is virtually no sound proofing between rooms and you can almost hear your neighbours breathe, let alone get up to any other more... more
