A week at the Agamenon
from greatexpectations64
We have just returned from the Agamenon and our first impressions were somewhat disappointing. The entrance is off a residential street with a piece of untidy derelict land directly opposite. We also had to wait for our room which is not really what you want to hear after travelling for several hours but the hotel has a policy of allowing guests to stay in their rooms until 12 noon on the day of departure so if there's nothing available, you just have to wait. As already mentioned by another trip advisor member, the rooms overlooking the pool (especially at the entrance end of the hotel) have little privacy as they are over-looked by the neighbouring apartment blocks. The noise from dogs, cars and motorbikes can also a bit disturbing especially early on a morning but it's just general day-to-day noise and not crowds of youths or local bars blaring out music. The Agamenon could accurately be described as a hotel of two sides because the views from the other side of the hotel (overlooking the harbour) are completely stunning. It's easy to see why people choose to return to the Agamenon time after time (and they do). We seemed to be the only couple who hadn't stayed there before. In summing up, the Agamenon is a quiet and pleasant hotel. The rooms and public areas are clean and tidy and the staff friendly. The food was reasonable and a buffet style self-service. I'm sure we would stay at the Agamenon again but only if guaranteed rooms on the "right" side of the hotel.
Great Hotel

Stayed at the Agamenon for a week. Brilliant location, a short walk to Es Castell marina for lots of nice restaurants and bars. 25 minute walk to Mahon harbour for more restaurants and good shopping, takes less than 5 minutes in the car. The hotel is lovely, the room was spotlessly clean and considering we had a standard double room it was very spacious and very modern. The views were beautiful of Es Castell and the ocean. Views from the bar and restaurant are fantastic panoramic views from Es Castell right across to Mahon harbour. The hotel felt very safe as we often went out and left things in the room. We did not worry as the maid was very nice and honest. We only ate in the hotel once, at breakfast but was not too impressed, although probably a little unfair to criticise from just the one experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only down side was having a room facing the car park. It was quite noisey of a night time with people coming and going, and the dust bins were emptied every night around 1 or 2 in the morning, so the sound of the dust carts were quite loud. Our room was furthest away from the ocean but still a fantastic view. All in all we had a great week, lovely hotel, great location, would be stay there again? yes, definately, but next time we would book a room on the other side of the hotel, apparently room numbers in 11 and 12 are the best !!
Superb setting
from BingoBetty
We came back from The Agamenon Hotel yesterday, having stayed there for 10 nights. We found it to be a lovely friendly hotel in a superb setting. The view from the balconies and gardens were magnificent. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis - the rooms were spotlessly clean and found the breakfasts to be excellent. We only ate dinner in the hotel once, plenty of choice, but would have preferred it not to have been a buffet style. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they couldn't have been more helpful. The pool and area around it were excellent and we didn't have any problems getting sunbeds at any time of the day. We would recommend the Es Castell area and particularly this hotel to anyone visiting Menorca.
Nice hotel

We stayed here at end of June/beg. July. I agree about the sunbeds being booked around the pool and garden, as our room overlooked both it was amusing to watch people going out as early as 7 in the morning with their towels and the pool could not be used before 9am. Around 10.30 after breakfast they all appeared and most of them did not move for the rest of the day. How you can say you have been to Menorca lying around an hotel swimming pool escapes me, all you see is the airport and the hotel, still each to their own. There was some noise sometimes during the day from a dog in the apartments nearby but not that bad. The hotel is in a residential area so you must expect everyday noise, at least it wasn't loud music and kids screaming. The food in the restaurant was OK, cannot remember getting beefburgers, maybe we ate out that night. The hotel is well run and maintained and the broken tiles mentioned round the pool, well I watched the maintenance man repairing these one morning and did not notice them being loose afterwards. Our room was ready on arrival and when we asked for an extra pillow this was brought to the room within minutes and the flusher on the toilet came off and this was repaired by the time we came back from dinner. The restaurant could be better, the buffet counter ran out of things and either was not replaced or you had to ask and wait a while for replacements, for 4 star you expect a lot better. We requested a room on the pool side of the hotel as this is where the sun is mid afternoon onwards and we like to sit on the balcony to get the sun after being out and about during the day and we were not disappointed. The views of the harbour are lovely. We would go back here.

Excellent value and Location.

My wife and I have just returned from a 7 day stay at the Hotel Agamenon. From the moment we arrived all the staff were excellent. We stayed on a B & B basis, although we decided to stay in for dinner on two occasions and what a good decision that was, 14 euros for a 3 course buffet of excellent food and as much as you wanted. If you are going to eat in make sure the Almond cake in on, it is so good. We went for a quiet week and this we most certainly had, with neither sight nor sound of any children at the hotel. The only aspect which we did not expect to find and which the hotel say they do not allow is the reservation of sunbeds. Now there were fewer than we felt there should have been but to have to get down to the pool before 7-00 to reserve a sunbed goes against the grain. Some were reserved and then nobody showed up to occupy them until 10-00 am. Yes we had to reserve where we wanted to sit so we are as guilty as the other guests but if you did not do it you would have no chance of using a lounger until late in the afternoon. For anyone looking for a quiet break in clean and very comfortable surroundings then you will find no better value than the Hotel Agamenon.
Excellent location
from Polo-Bear
This hotel is superbly located and run. It is one of the best hotels my wife and I have stayed in. It is unpretentious and the staff are very friendly and genuinely helpful. The service was excellent. The views of the harbour of Mahon (the capital 2 kilometres away) on the side of which the hotel is situated, are spectacular. The air conditioning in the bedrooms really worked. The bathrooms well appointed and clean. All rooms had a view of the harbour. The swimming pool is a good useful size, attractive and well maintained. The hotel is situated in a quiet location on the western edge of Es Castell. It is within walking distance of Mahon. There are Taxis and a good bus service. Unless you just want to stay around the swimming pool for your stay, I suggest a Hire car is essential if you want to see the Island and visit any beaches. There are plenty of restaurants in Es Castell around the pretty harbour, but they seem to mainly provide international cuisine and are not cheap. I suggest that travelling to Mahon town will give a better choice and they are cheaper, which is surprising as there are a lot of very big yachts carrying monied people. Ciudadela, by the way, is on the vary far west of the island. Mahon is at the other end in the East (35 miles away). Mahon is the capital of Menorca and Es Castell is between Mahon and the harbour mouth, farther east. So the address as quoted here is slightly misleading. In summary : An excellent, very friendly, well run, hotel suitable for anyone who likes piece and quiet and a good nights sleep!
excellent hotel
from migmogs
we have just gor back from a 1 week stay at the Agamenon in Es Castell. The hotel is a true 4* plus experience. It has 60 rooms over 5 floors which are accessed by lift. there is beautiful cool marble every where and the entire hotel is airconditioned. It is spotlessly clean throughout. We stayed on a B & B basis and where greeted every morning by a supberb buffet, which couldn't be faulted, there was champayne and smoked salmon for those who felt like it down to a great English bacon and eggs. etc The pool was great and the views over the bay of Mahon with the boats and yahts moving up and down brilliant. Every room has a sea view. The staff where extremely efficient, friendly and very helpfull. all spoke english. The hotel caters for couples and families . allthough I would say more for couples, even though we did see a few happy families there. It is a quiet peaceful hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We didn't eat at night time in the hotel but chose to dine out at the many small reteraunts that are dotted around Es Castell and Cala Font. I would say do try the Itallian that is very near to the hotel at the top of the street. excellent true Itallian food........ Es castell is a great place and there is no violence anywhere. we where there for the Annual Horse Festival and had the party of a life time for 3 days. Menorcans sure know how to party. We would recomend this hotel to all regards maggie
Loved the Agamenon
from Taplow
Es Castell is a great base and the Agamenon a great hotel to be based in. It's quiet and the garden has a stunning view over the water. You can sit by the pool and watch boats of all sizes glide by all day. Or you can catch the local bus to Mao (stop is 3 minutes away) and go exploring. The staff at the hotel are all absolutely delightful and very efficient. The rooms are comfortable and they all have balconies with views (nice bathrooms too). Breakfast and pool snacks are very good, though I don't rate the restaurant that highly for dinner. But in the evening you can stroll down to Cala Fonts and eat at some of the island's best fish restaurants in idyllic surroundings (12 minutes). There are some tourist ghettos on Menorca, but Es Castell is a real place and a delightful experience.
The best hotel in Minorca

The Hotel Agamenon in Es Castell is the best hotel in Minorca. It is in the best place, has the best views over the town and harbour, has the best staff, and the best restaurant. - Thats it If I went anywhere else I would be mad!

Really, the essence of getting the best out of Menorca is to hire a car, if you can. For a very small island it is packed with things to see and do, and the beauty of it is that you can do two or three different things and still be back at the hotel by 4pm for a couple of... more
