Really, the essence of getting the best out of Menorca is to hire a car, if you can. For a very small island it is packed with things to see and do, and the beauty of it is that you can do two or three different things and still be back at the hotel by 4pm for a couple of lazy hours around the pool. You don't spend hours on the road just getting from A to B.
As for the Hotel Agamenon, I couldn't fault its cleanliness, friendliness and facilities. Rosa, on reception, is a mine of information. The waiting staff in the restaurant remember your drinks order from one night to the other and nothing is too much trouble. The maids kept the room spotless. Es Castell is a small quiet town, and it takes a good half hour's walking to get into the centre of Mahon. If Shanks's Pony is your only transport, you might find that a problem, but there's always the bus. There again, we met people who had done nothing and gone nowhere and had really enjoyed themselves. As for us, we gorged on archaeological sites, walked our legs off in the glorious countryside and wore a path between Mahon and Ciutadella to see the museums and the galleries. And that's before I got started on the leather outlets! They do really good shoes and handbags in Menorca. All in all it was one of the best holidays we've had, and I would reccommend the Agamenon and Menorca to anybody.

I really don't know what the other reviewer was expecting. Obviously hadn't done their homework before booking. Es Castell is more of a working town than a resort, no tacky tourists shops, great!
we are both in our late 50s and found plenty to do. We enjoy trying bars and restaurants where the locals go and thats one of the reasons we booked there, to get away from the loud rowdy brits abroad brigade.
We found the local people very friendly and helpful at our pitiful attempts at Spanish. At least make an effort
We went into Mahon quite a few times. There was a 3 day fiesta on during our stay and we mingled with the locals (and other tourists) and joined in the street dancing and the horse parade.
there is also a large market there I think on a wednesday
We did a couple of tours of the island which were very worthwhile. We like to see a bit of the place we are staying in which the other reviewer seemed not to do. Life is what you make it!
as for the hotel, we could not fault it, from our arrival to departure the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Again a lot of it is how you treat them too...
our carrier Futura airlines went into liquidation the day before we left but flights were provided later on the day of departure and we were able to keep our room until 6pm at no extra cost.

We were on bed and breakfast which was very substantial and catered for all tastes. We had dinner twice in the hotel which again was very good, lots of choice.
Towels were provided for use at the pool, again a bonus. and sunbeds were always available
all in all i would not hesitate going back and would recommend it to anyone
The only thing that lets the hotel down is the evening entertainment, but then who wants to stay in the hotel every evening!

Arriving at the Agamenon about...

May 2008, finchett

Arriving at the Agamenon about 9.45pm, rain was falling and it was windy, the coach driver dropped myself and friend off in the street, we finally got inside the Hotel, reception looked up at us and asked `what do you want`, to which I answered we are booked in with first choice for bed and breakfast and gave our names, passports were checked, we were then handed a room key and with her hand the reception person pointed to the lift `the lift is there and your room is on the first floor`, the room was very nice, it had to be better than the welcome we received !! we just wished we had not booked breakfast- everything was sat in at least 2cm. of oil,as was all the food.
Looking what to do, we saw that there was a local craft market in Es Castell
on Monday and Wednesday, so Monday we went down to the square but no market,
so we walked around looking for something to do , Wednesday we tried the craft market again only to find 4 stalls all selling goods made in China, we took the local bus and visited Mahon , but there was very little to do there either
only shopping .we did find a nice cafe DINKUM`S in one of the coves - very welcoming friendly and good food at a sensible price, at Dinkum`s they had a boat trip taking just 1 hour, we found very little else to do ,
sorry Menorca if you cannot entertain 2 people in their 60`s we will be going somewhere else next time .
