I was unsure about holidaying in Crete, or any other Greek resort, as I have heard that standards are lower than in other European countries. I did my research before going and as this hotel had good reports, I decided to try it out as the price was reasonable.
As far as Rethymnon was concerned, the resort is very clean with a wonderful assortment of restaurants. I did not use the beach although this looked to be very clean. The Hotel Ideon is right in the centre of the old town, in a very convenient location. Some of the hotels are very much out of town and quite a trek to any good restaurants or decent shops. I was able to wander into the old town at night in about 2 minutes. It was very busy, even though the holiday season is coming to an end for Crete. I felt absolutely safe and saw no evidence of any crime. Even though the resort was busy, there was no problem getting a table at a decent restaurant, all of which looked very clean.
The Hotel Ideon is quite small and although very good in the main areas downstairs, and very clean, the rooms are very basic and the bathrooms are ridiculously small. The staff were polite and efficient but not overly friendly. I chose to buy the ‘half board’ option, which I now regret, as there was only one main meal, with a vegetarian option, and the food was not particularly good. Sunbeds around the pool are free but space is limited and if the hotel had been full it would have been impossible to ever get sunbed unless you were prepared to go out immediately after breakfast and stay there for the rest of the day.
