We stayed at a cheaper hotel down the road and came to Hotel Makanda to have a special dinner at their poolside restaurant. What a treat this was, the food was excellent and the ambiance pure romance. The waiter was nice enough to show us one of the rooms......impressive.... more

Brilliant really covers all aspects of this hotel! We have traveled alot, but this was a first visit to Costa Rica and we were a little nervous. We did not know where to begin looking, but liked the great reviews on this hotel, as well as the fact that they do not accept... more

My new husband and I enjoyed our honeymoon at this hotel in July and we are still talking about it. What a wonderful spot we found. The property only had around 10 rooms, its own beach, a great poolside restaurant and talk about monkeys!! We woke up everyday and went to bed... more

We stayed at Hotel Makanda for our honeymoon and loved it. The rooms are huge and elegant with large terraces where we hung out on the hammock. Loved that. Lots of monkeys around the pool and property, so we spent alot of time there. Their beach is not great, too rocky,... more

A Beautiful Place
Wonderful secluded setting, our studio felt very private, it had everything you could ask for and each day the bathroom was decorated with fresh flowers and petals arranged on the towels, quite stunning. The staff were friendly and helpful. The view over the rainforest and ocean was amazing. We had regular sitings of monkeys, sloths and numerous birds. Superb!
Excellent Service and Food.
We spent a great weekend at this hotel. The Studio was very clean and has splendid views. Food was excellent. We had planned to try other restaurants nearby but after having our first dinner at the restaurant by the pool we decided to have them all at the Makanda. Staff is very kind, fresh cut flowers everywhere, we will certainly come back at this "Little Heaven"
Makanda was fabulous!
We arrived at Makanda in the early evening after a long and stressful drive. Once we got there is was dark and raining, so we had no idea what beauty lied ahead. The room is tastefully decorated, nicely laid out and strewn with fresh flowers (a cute touch). You can light the room in 50 different ways, which we thought was kind of funny. The best part of the room are the french doors, which span one entire wall and provide the most amazing view. We ordered room service that evening and had the most amazing food- costa rican trout with almond,... more
Loved it, will be back
Hotel Makanda provides a once is a life time experience with a beautiful setting, exellent customer service and a restaurant over looking the ocean. I had the best experice staying at the resort.
Not nearly as good as I expected...pretty let down.
We booked four nights at Makanda and were looking forward to our stay there after three nights in a different part of the country. On our third day at Makanda, it rained continuously for a solid 12 hours. During the rainstorm, our only toilet became "haunted", making its own volcanic gurgling sounds and eventually ceased functioning. In addition, a separate and significant leak appeared in the clothes closet, unrelated to the restroom issue. While nothing could be done about the rain, we reported the problems to the management office.... more
Was Fantastic!
My boyfriend and I have been overworked for the past five years, and when one of our friends went to Makanda for his honeymoon, we had to check it out. We figured if it was good enough for his Honeymoon, it was good enough for a relaxing vacation. We weren't disappointed... We arrived to a gorgeous hotel off the beaten path - which we both liked. The Guard at the front lowered his 'chain' that sat about half a foot of the ground so we wouldn't trip as we walked in. Our bags were ushered to our room that was being set up, and we hit... more
Unmatched
We stayed here for a couple of day of our honeymoon. We could not have been happier! Stayed in Villa 10, stunning views, large unique rooms with full kitchens, which we took advantage of. Every morning around 8am, a group of about 30 White Faced monkeys camped outside of our rooms and on the balcony! Beautiful pool area and restaurant. We will return! Pat and Carina Pennsylvania
Start of a wonderful honeymoon!!
Wow, after spending a few months researching and reading reviews we decided on Makanda for 4 nights to begin our honeymoon in Costa Rica. We had friends stay there before and highly recomended it. I did have concerns about the bugs as the villas are set right into the jungle, but all that was washed away when we spent our first night in Villa 10. Unbelievable views, great service and we were both surprised that there weren't more bugs. Our Villa had two airconditioners and two huge cieling fans that kept the room perfectly cold. <br... more
Private, Exotic, Wonderful
We wanted to find a hotel that made us feel like we were a part of the jungle yet enjoy all the comforts and luxury that small boutique hotels can offer, intimate, well tended and excellent service - and we were very satisfied with the Makanda by the Sea. We stayed in Studio #11 for four nights - and loved it. The entire wall that faces the ocean is a series of glass and wood doors that open up. The entire room is strategically placed facing the ocean, framed by trees that provided us with the perfect view. We woke up to the sight... more
Intimate and Lush
This was a luxury quick getaway, so my wife and I had expectations of relaxing, nature and good food. We also tempered expectations, having travelled a lot and generally preferring to get off the beaten, commercial path. All expectations were fulfilled. Makanda has a great setting in low lying rainforest with views of the Pacific. The vegetation is still very lush, and the villas are nestled into the hills. Troupes of monkeys came through the trees every morning, and sloths occasionally lazilly hung out in the trees near the pool.... more
