Good family accommodation
Me and my girlfriend have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Sol Cala D'Or. I read peoples reviews before booking and they were spot on! Like other people have said the Hotel is in a great location near to the bars and restaurants and all 3 beaches are within walking distance. The hotel rooms are very clean and well kept and the pool area is well maintained. The only problem that we came across was that we had to pay 2 euros per sun bed for the pool area. This resulted in people wanting to get there money's worth and getting up early to get a prime postion. This then created a cuing system which at times could take up to half an hour especially when the sunbed man goes missing. Apart from the above little problem i would recommend this hotel and Cala D'Or to people and especially to young families and couples. There are plenty of restauraunts to choose from in the main centre and a good choice of bars too. I would pop along to one of the cocktail bars and try one of their specials. I would also recommend a trip down to the marina to see how the other half live. There are some good restaurants to choose from but just check the prices first before taking a seat. Some are more expensive than others but definately worth trying as it's a good atmosphere and a good place to people watch.
Clean, good value accomodation
I stayed in the Sol Cala D'Or apartments in June this year with my fiance. The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our arrival. The apartment was on the ground floor, so it was a bit dark but it was also further away from the pool and noise from the bar, which was a plus. The apartments are very near the Cala Gran beach which has lots of sun loungers for hire by the day. It also has two or three restaurants just off the sand, and very clean public toilets! There are lots of british, german and dutch tourists. Kids seem to be well catered for, and there are loads of "British" restaurants which we avoided, but they did look very popular. The marina area has a couple of good places to eat. The best we tried was called Aquarius, and Blanco Y Negro was also nice. I wouldn't recommend Zocalo- I had a fish kebab which was so overcooked it was inedible. On the whole the resort could suit couples or families. You could never speak a word of spanish and eat british food the whole time you are there (which was definitely NOT what we were into), but if you fancy some good spanish food it is very easy to find too! It was a good holiday, and the apartments were very reasonably priced. I would recommend the Sol Apartments.
good location
Stayed for a week at these apartments, we had got a good deal and deceided to go after reading a lot of positive reports on this and other sites. Apart from the first night when we arrived at approx 3am to find our apartment had no electric. The man on reception tried to rectify it but was unable. He then said we had to stay there until morning as no other rooms available(no lights, nothing!) He offered no battery light, we naturally refused to stay and within 5 mins he found us another room. After this holiday was good, short walk to beaches and a longer but easy walk to the marina. There were many restaurants and bars in easy reach, we visited a different one every night and did not have a bad meal and all reasonably priced. Our room was near a local bar but the kareoke etc stopped and midnight each night so no trouble sleeping. I could imagine the beaches would get crowded in summer as theyre all coves but fine in June.
Sun in the Sol
Went for a week with girlfriend and things were as we wanted. Clean studio, overlooking pool with constant hot water. Close to resort centre and beach. Couldn`t get my head around the queueing at poolside to pay for sun loungers in the morning and be squashed in like sardines tho!! A towell on Cala Gran beach a much better option! Holiday booked on internet a few weeks before and good value.Enjoyed it.
Great holiday
We stayed at the Sol Cala D'or for a short break of 4 nights at the end of May. We found the apartments to be of an excellent standard - a little dated but very clean and well presented. Our 1 bedroom apartment was split level with an upstairs bedroom and bathroom, very spacious. The apartment was cleaned regularly and was equipped with plenty of towels and amenities. We found the staff to be very helpful and pleasant. The apartments are in a very good location with shops, bars & restaurants all within a 5 minute walk. You also have a choice of 3 picturesque beaches to choose from all within a 10 - 15 minute walk - Cala Gran, Cala Esmeralda and Cala D'or. Overall we found Cala D'or to be a lovely holiday resort with plenty of nice restaurants, shops and lovely little beaches. I would definitely recommend it to families & couples, there is plenty going on but it's possible to have a nice relaxing holiday here and I would definitely return to the Sol Cala D'or.
Brilliant holiday
Me and my fiancée stayed at the sol cala d'or hotel for the first time in may, it was absoloutley brilliant; friendly staff, very clean pool and nice food. The appartment was very clean and spacious too, there's even a jacuzzi on the roof!!! If you stay here be sure to go to Hollywood bar opposite, this is were we stayed most nights and had a little sing-song on the karaoke, the vodka measures here are beyond belief!! Great family bar and really nice bar staff. The restaurant we would advise to go to is La Fontanella, absoloutley fantastic, quality food from Big T-bone steaks to salads, they have everything! We went on the explore Mallorca quad bike tour which again was a once in a life time expierience and also the speed boat trips down by the marina were awesome too. Soooo cheap! I would go back to cala d'or again, anytime! Fantastic holiday.
Great location - but cold rooms
just returned from a week at the Sol Cala D'or (which is in Cala D'or, funnily enough, and not Cala Santanyi). we were keen to book some last minute, early season sun, and Majorca looked just the job. unfortunately, the weather wasn't great for around half the time we were there, but i guess that's the chance you take going away in may. first impressions of the hotel were good. reception staff are helpful and most speak good English. we received a ground floor apartment, which was very tidy, although it was only cleaned three times during the week. although the room was of a decent size and couldn't be faulted for cleanliness, the one problem we had was that it was terrifically cold, and there's no means of heating it up other than switching the cooker on. again, this is probably a consequence of the time of year we were there, but it did mean we had few options when the weather wasn't the best. our room was also very shaded by the trees outside the door, which meant it never really heated up, even once the sun poked out from behind the clouds. perhaps related, perhaps not, but the shower only gave you literally five minutes of hot water too, which ensured showering was a brief experience. everything else was fine. cooking utensils in the room were useful and very clean and the pool area was very pleasant. location was great - only a couple of minutes from Cala Gran beach and five minutes from Cala Ferrera beach. Cala D'or has tried to badge itself as a chic resort, and while I'd definitely hesitate to call it that, it's certainly not Magaluf. it does have a smattering of nice (and pretty expensive) shops, and the range of restaurants is impressive, ensuring you don't have to eat the same food night after night, even if you're a fussy vegetarian like me. best of the bunch were Blanco y Negro at the Marina, which is excellent, and the Capriccio Italiano, which does some great salads and terrific and unusual pizza. The Spice of India was also very good, and can certainly punch its weight against its counterparts in the UK - well worth a stop. overall, Cala D'or is worth a visit and the Sol Cala D'or offers good value. even better in the height of summer once its had the chance to thaw out too, i'd suggest.
Brilliant Holiday Location
The hotel was really nice, and the pool area was very nice, with a bar on the side serving drinks and food all day which was really nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful and our rep from thomson was also great, went through all the options but didnt push us to purchase any of them, which worked well as we felt happy with it and booked a few! The location of the hotel was brilliant, its in the perfect location for anything you want to do. There is the hollywoods bar opposite which can get quiet lively at nights and has a great atmosphere, and a great little restaurant down the road called Supertramps, for when you dont fancy walking down to the harbour for the more variety of restaurants. Supertramps served lovely food and the staff were also great, the prices are reasonable as well. For a more expensive meal, Blanco Y Negro is a must. The staff there were absolutely brilliant, very friendly and made myself and my girlfriend feel very comfortable. The food was amazing and the location is great, right on the harbour looking out at all the expensive boats. The beach nearby is small, but lots of fun. The sea is lovely and there is always a fun friendly atmosphere there. Listen out for the man with the fruit, its lovely! :o) An excursion I would recommend would be Aqualand, lots of fun for anyone who likes the water. Overall, couldn't ask for more from a holiday, it had it all!
Excellent Location
The hotel was within walking distance to everything you could possibly need, across the street was the Hollywood bar where we watched the world cup, has a friendly atmosphere and good service. The beach was 2 minutes away and was not too big but beautiful views of the bay. A ten minute walk takes you into the town centre where there are plenty of shops to get souvieners and there were some lovely resturaunts. Across the road from the hotel was a restuarant called Supertramps, doesn't look like much but the food is excellent and the staff are really freidly. The hotel was exceptionally clean and our room was huge, on the top floor with amazing views of the pool and the sea. The staff were freindly and polite and helped us with any questions we had, the pool was big enough for everyone. I would strongly recomend that you take a walk to the Marina and take a look at the boats adn try out some of the restaurants, my favourite was Blanco y Negro, a little expensive but well worth the money. Also you should take the day trip to AquaLand, excellent fun.
Great value for your money
Stayed here for 3 nights, Oct 3rd - Oct 6th, 2006. Found it a bit difficult to find the hotel but since it is not a huge town, eventually we arrived. Keep in mind that this is not the sol melia boutique hotel which is right down the road and much more expensive. Parking was no problem. Check in was a breeze. Front desk was friendly. Gave us a nice room on the 3rd floor, one bedroom with balcony. Very quiet & peaceful. Be sure to ask for a room away from main street and higher up as possible. We were there at an off time but I can imagine it being noisy if one faced the street or was on a lower floor closer to the pool. Hotel room was very clean. Kitchen has everything one can need. Utensils, pots, pans, coffee maker, kettle, sink, oven was spotlessly clean. We were very impressed. Rooms are simple but large. There is a safe in room. We got a great rate through the hotel website with breakfast included. However, we could have passed on the breakfast. Perhaps it was off season, they do things differently. There was no buffet. We were seated and offered a menu. There was only one waiter who was very friendly and was constantly running around. However, it was a bit bizarre that they would have only one person doing all the work. We waited 30 minutes for a breakfast that was depressingly tiny and uninviting. We laughed if off and opted to make breakfast in our room the next two nights. There is a nice roof top solarium that was never crowded with jacuzzi. As for the pool, it was quite entertaining to witness people act like children with such determination to be the first one in line to get lounge beds by the pool. I think it is 2 euros a bed and they would get their beds and position them so that they would have them available for the entire day. The surrounding area has many shops. There is a large Caprabo Supermarket within walking distance, a few blocks from hotel. The area is a bit touristy. You won't find many locals there. It's a decent area to stay if you're trying to get more for you money. Just stay away from those horrible outdoor Karaoke places!!!!
