Fantastic
from WillowSouthofEngland
Absolutely fantastic!!!!! Everything is spotlessly clean, the facilities great. The food is fantastic, choosing dinner at breakfast was a bit of a talking point for all the guests! The walk in the Macesine is lovely, we some wonderful views. The people are so friendly and really helpful. All in all we had a wonderful time, I would recommend this hotel without to anyone without a doubt.
We loved it

We've just returned from a short break to Lake Garda, staying in the Hotel Maximilian in Malcesine. A wonderful hotel with good Italian food and helpful, courteous staff. We immediately relaxed into the Italian way of life. We made good use of the fitness facilities at the hotel. Although the indoor swimming pool is small, we had the pool to ourselves on each occasion. Book a lake view room - you will not be disappointed with the view. We opened our bedroom curtains each morning to see the lake with the back-drop of snow clad mountain peaks. Beautiful. The walk beside the lake from the hotel into the centre of Malcesine was pleasant and, apart from the short, steep climb back to the hotel from the lakeside, it was very flat.
Nice building let down by service, and attitude of the owners.

We've been meaning to post a review of this hotel since we stayed for our Honeymoon in June 2007. We were very disapointed with the hotel and the honeymoon suite, due to the air-con not working; complete lack of any welcome or fuss (no flowers or champagne in the room etc) the large bed turned out to be two singles pushed together with separate duvets. The air-con was the real problem, when we first arrived it was not too hot, but still warm enough that Brits like us would want it on, so we asked why it wasn't working and was told that it wouldn't come on because it wasn't warm enough! We were told to just leave the window open with the nets over. Now our room was right above the terrace of the restaurant (which was uncomfortably warm every night) and we could hear people very clearly; and with the windows open cigarette and cigar smoke came pouring in - also if we had decided to leave the windows open they would have been able to hear us (on our 'honeymoon') if you get my drift....... We made multiple requests and were given multiple unfeasable excuses every day until finally we were told that they had gone to turn it on (after they found the 'lost' key) and it wasn't working. We left two days later and it still wasn't working. Spent the last week camping at camping campagnola, which I can recommend! they had an iron and ironiong board there which hadn't been available even on request at the Maximilian which is a 4 star hotel!! These problems were exescerbated by the fact that after having discussed the air-con nearly every day (very very politely, I am not one to make a scene) we started to get a very frosty reception from some of the reception staff. A couple of the waiters were great, but there was also a couple of very 'terse' gentlemen. On one night we ordered a bottle of Verve Cliquout with our meal from the wine list; we were told there was none left, but recommended another Champagne which was apparently similar (not that I'd particularly know the difference - we were really just splashing out a little on our honeymoon) When I enquired as to the price of the recommended Champagne I was almost given a look of disgust as he explained he would have to go away and check. When he did come back there was (from memory) a £70 (100 euro) difference! On another occasion we paused briefly by the table of a couple who were in the room next to ours to thank them as they had left a bottle of prosecco and a flower outside our room, because my wife had been chatting to them the night before about how disappointed we had been with the lack of any welcome from the hotel on our arrival. (Thank -You if you ever read this it was a lovely gesture) We must have been in the way of a waiter as he came past screeching in Italian in a way that prompted several guests to turn and look - he could get past anyway, but a simple 'scuzi' would have sufficed. We had booked the hotel over a year before when we went and visited it ourselves; we paid what is a lot of money to us for the honeymoon suite and the attitude from the staff was very poor. All I can say is that we spent our honeymoon wishing we had booked back into the La Perla Apartements where we had stayed a year ago instead of the Maximilian. I can see how older guests may enjoy it when the air-con is working (if it ever is) but frankly having to eat indoors of an evening at an early hour and not being able to sit on the terrace overlooking the lake to have your meal when you've paid over £1500 for your room for a few nights soon loses it's attractions and we preferred to go into Malcesine many nights. To end on a positive note, the food and the hotel itself were very "nice" but lacked any kind of "Malcesine Magic". There are better hotels at this price.
Didn't want to leave

My wife and I have just returned from ten days holiday in Hotel Maximillian and would recommend it and the town of Malcesine to any one who likes a nice peaceful holiday (Not for clubbers) Hotel nas been tastfully refurbished in recent years, and our room was light clean and spacious Food excelent (not the same meal twice) but watch the wine bill Service could not be faulted and staff all freindly and helpfull If you like water sports this is the place for you as well All in all good place to chill out and relax with fantastic views
Overpriced and out of date
from Helen1978
Fantastic views over the lake and courteous and friendly waiters - that is where my praise ends. Now my views may be a little marred by the fact we were the youngest residents there by at least 20 years (we're 29) but I found the place stale, backward and overpriced. We paid 212 euros a night for a suite (which includes breakfast and dinner) The furnishings were dated, the (double) bed was two singles pushed together (with two single duvets covers!?) The towels in the bathroom reminded me of the quality you use to dry the dog down (e.g. 10 years old) The swimming pools are tiny and can only fit 3 people in at a time, some clever navigation was needed to avoid other guests. The real downer was the standard of the service provided by the ladies on reception. The junior lady was the better of the two but their attitude can be ideally illustrated by last day's events. When the complementary shuttle bus to the airport was nearing an hour late we were in danger of missing our flight. In keeping with the complementary service, we requested them to order and fund a taxi to get us to the airport for obvious reasons. I got the unsurprising answer of "No Way". The action I should have taken when considering whether to book this hotel in the first place.
lives up to its promise

Agree with everything reported inthe other reviews. The hotel is very helpful with all requests and the meals were ;- breakfast good, dinner excellent, we were there 14 days and did not see the same menu twice. It is a beautiful walk into malcesine and also the other direction brings afew surprises. The food was very good everywhere we ate so consequently ate too much, good job we did plenty of walking. We were busy all fortnight exploring, some of the trips we really enjoyed e.g. The Dolomites, Verona, The wine tour, Limone, and Monte Baldo should not be missed, the scenery and flowers are so beautiful we spent all day up there. Venice for us was a little disappointing but we are glad we went. Back to the hotel, the only disappointment was the outside pool (not for a serious swim), we were in the Cristina villa and the room was beautiful although I was not sure it was the lake view we had paid for but after a few days we were glad to be there it was so peaceful. We shall definetly return some day.
Fantastic Hotel

We stayed at the Maximillian for 10 days in June last year. It is a lovely hotel, we had a lake view room and it was wonderful. We stayed half board and the food was always excellent with a good choice and an excellent wine list. It is a nice stroll along the lake into Malcesine itself and the town is very pretty. You can easily catch the ferryboats along the lake we visited Riva and Limone. We also had a half day trip to Verona which was very good. An excellent holiday and would have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel or Malcesine.
Couldn't Fault It
from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just spent 11 nights at the Maximilian and could not fault it. It's a brilliant location away from the road in its own grounds, with fantastic views over the lake. Food was excellent with a varied menu matched by the service. Staff were always helpful and efficient. Rooms, facilities and grounds were immaculate. Malcesine itself is very pretty with plenty of shops, bars and places to eat. Had difficulty trying to find a taxi, but bus service OK and there are plenty of ferries if you want to visit other towns on the lake. If you want a quiet relaxing holiday with no worries then we would thoroughly recommend the Maximilian.
A brilliant hotel and holiday
from John_Freeman
We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in Malcesine and the Hotel Maximilian, which is about 20 - 25 minutes walk south of the town down a short hill and along a flat well maintained path (there is also a good bus route about 80 metres from the hotel, but the hotel itself is away from the road, on the lake side itself in its own grounds and very quiet). Our room was not a lakeside one but was excellent (you have to pay extra for a lakeside view) and well maintained throughout our stay. We went half board but the food was consistently well prepared and tasty throughout the week and the service efficient, the waiters and waitresses all very helpful. This is a popular hotel with German, Austrian and British tourists. Although I got the impression that many of the staff were happier speaking German as well as their native Italian, many staff were very good English speakers (putting us to shame). Malcesine itself is a great little town with plenty of restaurants to sort all tastes. I recommend taking the cable car up Mout Baldo as long as the day is fine for stunning views of the lake and surrounding area. A trip across the lake to Limone is also recommended, and I am sure many of the other towns are well worth seeing; we personally think macesine was the best of the northern towns for us but another visit some time will see us going further afield.
Paradise found

We stayed for 10 nights in August and the hotel was the best ever. The tranquil location with picture postcard views was lovely. The rooms were excellent - nicely furnished and plenty of room. The food was superb - a different menu every night - plenty of it and lovely. The staff could not have been more helpful. malcesine was a 25 minute walk along the well lit lakeside path. We would definately go back.
