Mimi del Mar Hotel

We booked this hotel because we wanted to stay right on the beach,didnt expect much as far as ameneties etc. The place sits right on the beach, you have to literally walk on the sand to even get to the front desk. Very nice personnel, especially the guys at the beach are awesome! They will keep your chair all day, you can take off for hours and it will still be there. We have stayed in Playa Del carmen sometimes twice a year and have always been treated wonderfully. Our last trip is one that we will forget. We first had to walk three blocks on the beach with our luggage, because the cab driver said that there was no street entrance which there wasn't. We arrived and were told we did not have a reservation, the manager was rude, and finally gave us a room when I told him I would get the police to come and get back the $500 dollar deposit we had mailed him. Obviously, experiences and opinions vary. I just got back from PDC Sep 30, and I enjoyed the place. I guess it really all depends on what you are used to and what you expect. First off, price vs. amenities. If you want room service, "in hotel" restaurant/bar, big pool, gift shop, or anything resembling "all inclusive"- then this ain't it. Go somewhere else and pay for it. stayed at mimi del mar Feb 2005 rooms were clean and right on the beach staff was friendly, night guard keeps an eye on the place. The beach wasn't very big in front of the hotel much of the beach has been washed away. They had waiters willing to bring you a drink from a nearby bar. I felt it was alittle expensive, the rooms have a frig so you can keep your own beer in there also a blender we didn't even try to see if it worked, coffee maker. We travelled to PDC mid January. I had booked the Mimi del Mar through their web-site. The manager ( I think) had emailed me and told me they had availability for the days we wanted. He told me he needed our credit card for confirmation. I emailed the info to him and assumed everything was okay. Mimi del Mar is a nice place to stay if you dont care for your safety and how you are treated...But if you have children stay away from that place.. The staff was rude from the time we arrive till we left. We stayed out side waiting for a room for 3 1/2 hrs. We were traveling w/children so it was not that fun..We expected better from the staff, They charged us not having the phone hung up, when we didn't even touch the phone our entire trip. This hotel was misrepresented in a extreme way. I booked a suite and found out when we arrived that it consisted of an army cot for my daughter! I was given a room on the third floor and there was not elevator! I was given driving directions but found out that you can't get within 3 blocks of the hotel since they made a large area into a pedestrian mall. I had to park 4 blocks away and drag the luggage all this way and then up to the 3rd floor as well. The hotel can only be entered by walking on to the sand beach. The hotel wasn't bad... more

I highly recommend Mimi del Mar,great view, great people, very polite and your breakfast is included, that's more than you need to start having fun all day long. We stumbled upon this hotel as we were looking for accomadation's on the beach. Very close to the ferry and just a few blocks from the bus terminal and taxi's. We were impressed! The price was reasonable, we kind of haggled with the gentlemen and paid $100 US for 3 of us. We got a king size bed with a roll away bed and still had room to move around. I traveled to PDC 2 years ago (am currently planning another trip to PDC) and stayed at the Mimi del Mar. I researched what "looked" like it was beachfront and what was truly beachfront. The Mimi is exactly what it offers up....Beachfront accomodation with a rustic flair. Affordable for location, accomodation, and service. They have a great location on the beach at the end of 1st norte (I think). The tiny front desk office is literally ON THE SAND. You walk from the edge of the street through the sand up a few steps and you're in the office.... more
