Great value, friendly, comfortable hotel - shame about the veggie choices!
from HolisticGoddess
Travelling with Procters Coaches we paid £119 per person for a four night stay with bed, breakfast and three course evening meal. The Rivelyn turned out to be great value for price, very clean and comfortable, with a friendly and helpful staff, and a lovely comfy bed, we slept right through the night .We had a five channel TV, good hot shower and a hospitality tray etc. Although not usually our thing, some good entertainment was on offer on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of our stay The only snag was their lack of knowledge of vegetarianism. Although there were three choices on the menu for the main course at dinner ( combinations of chicken, beef or fish usually -none were vegetarian-nor was salad offered) We had to ask each day what was available ie: nut roast (twice), the ubiquitous 'cheese and broccoli bake' and 'spinach and mascarpone bake' (in effect almost the same meal again!) On the Wednesday the starter was mackerel, chicken and leek soup or (wait for it!) a tiny tumbler of orange juice! We ended up with said orange juice and had to ask for a roll and butter! They also 'ran out' of Earl Grey Tea, Hash Browns and breakfast grapefruit (even though all were apparantly 'on offer') Eventually we stopped asking for items that were obviously unavailable, as we started to feel like we were expecting too much from the' waiting on staff'. We started to feel uncomfortable and embarrassed like we had three heads or something! Despite the above, all in all The Rivelyn is a great hotel and good value if you like your eggs, bacon, sausage, meat and fish, but not so good if you like fruit, salad or veggie options. I would love to go to The Rivelyn Hotel in the future, and would happily pay an extra £20 or so, but they would have to seriously rethink their position on vegetarian choices, and PUT THEM ON THE MENU PLEASE! Scarborough is a lovely place, well worth a visit, it has a beautiful coastline, great walks, some good shops, and is easy reach of other great places such as York and Whitby. I would definitely recommend it! Liked most: Thecomfy bed, and the fact that The Rivelyn Hotel is in Scarborough. Liked least: The lack of vegetarian choices!

Thank you for your kind and constructive review. With reference to your comments in regard to our lack of Vegetarian options we are pleased to advise that our Chef's are currently in the process of introducing our new summer menu. This will feature a selection of vegetarian starters and main courses, including some hot dishes, omelettes & salads. We hope to welcome you back to the Rivelyn, to sample our new menu in the not to distant future.
Rivelyn Hotel (faulty Towers)
from Dancingqueen42
just read other peoples reviews on this hotel . we went for christmas on a coach holiday with bowens (great disapoitment )the place was very cold .heating turned off . lift was broken when we arrived and broke again after being repaired, the entertainment they advertised we didnt get .management was not interested in peoples complaints.we complained to bowens, they investigated our complaints, we recieved from them the hotels reply , which is four pages long admitting all our complaints that occured but refuse to accept liability so all in all we would not be returning to this hotel and not returning to bowens . (still ongoing not going to give up ) to be continued .............Price paid £407 per person for four nights

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry that you didn't enjoy your festive break at the Rivelyn.
Unfortunately, we encountered severe problems with our bolier system, which consequently affected both the heating and water in some areas of the hotel. We are pleased to advise that this has been rectified through the installation of new boilers and a new central heating.
With regards to the entertainment, we are sorry that you weren't satisfied with the entertainment provided. Due to the limited dance floor area we aren't able to offer full dancing, and we, the hotel don't advertise this facility.
We are sorry that you found the price of £407 for two people full board unacceptable taking into account the above, but we have since offered you both a complimentary two night DB&B break at our new 3* hotel.
Northern Delight

I have just come back from a long weekend in the yorkshire seaside town of Scarborough. The weather was typical for January but the Rivelyn hotel more than made up for it with its warm friendly welcome. The staff were excellent and the food was fantastic it is cracking value and just a 5 minute walk into town. We can't wai to revisit in the summer.

We stayed here during a Caledonian Travel long weekend. Our overall experience of a tidy, superbly clean and well run hotel set in a sedate area of town and close to shops and services. The food was of a very high standard as was the general accomodation. Rooms were spacious, comfortable and warm. The hotel laid on entertainment and as far as I could see everyone enjoyed themselves. Staff were friendly and helpful. All in all you will not go wrong. Cost (2-people) about £280 for three nights B&B with excellent evening meal ( I don't know how they do it??). I will go back again.!! Robert
Great staff,pity about the toast

I stayed here as part of a coach party. The hotel is in a quiet street about 5 minutes from the esplanade, and the main road into Scarborough. There are no sea views, and the hotel lacks kerb appeal. There are 5 or 6 steps up to the reception, and so this would be difficult to negotiate for the disabled. Our room was small, but very clean. The bathroom looked newly decorated and again was very clean. Unfortunately the towel rail/radiator didin't work, which made the bathroom cold. The room was at the back of the hotel and received very little sun. There was a shortage of plugs. The TV was up on a shelf and plugged in via an extension lead. If you wanted to use the hairdryer, or charge your phone, it meant the TV wouldn't work. There was a small fan heater, which we used in the bathroom, but of course it had to be plugged into the extension lead. The beds were comfortable and the room was quiet. Bring your own hangers as we had very few. Some of our party had trouble with seagull noise, but then they do go with being near the sea! The dining room was in the basement, the stairs to it were quite steep. There is a lift but it only holds 2 at a time. The dining room was nicely decorated, and the tables were always nicely set. Breakfast was a choice of cereals or grapefruit, fruit juice. You could order a selection of cooked breakfasts. The toast was awful. Obviously made in advance and rubbery. The evening meal was good. There was a choice of starters- soup, juice and one other. The soup was always very good. For main course there were 3 choices or you could have a salad. Desserts again 3 or 4 choices, then tea/coffee. All the staff were good, particularly the dining staff - friendly, efficient and helpful. There is a nice lounge and bar with regular evening entertainment. Overall a clean and quite basic hotel with good food.
Great value hotel

Stayed at this hotel as a last minute 'getaway'. Great value at £40.00 each, dinner, bed & breakfast, near the esplanade, walking distance to shops & other bars. Staff are all exellent they really try you make sure you have a good stay. Room was basic but clean & had a great comfy bed. Food was good for what you paid, breakfast was big enough to last you until dinner & the entertainment in the evening although not our sort of thing looked well attended.
Loved this hotel
from bettyboo039
I have just returned from a 5 day holiday at this Hotel and thought it was great. The Hotel has been refurbished and my room was lovely, not a great view, but very roomy lots of storage space, and a lovely shower in the bathroom, which to me looked new. Food was great, lots of choice. The only comments I would make was that all the bedrooms seemed to have the washbasin in the bedroom rather than the bathroom so could be a problem if you liked your privacy, and they seemed short of staff in the dining room but Jason the Manager did his best to make sure everyone was looked after. We had entertainment on three nights of our stay and the last night the singer/comedian/magician was superb. I was travelling on my own and felt safe and looked after and I really enjoyed this Hotel, will definitely go back again.
Bargin
from sarahcooke
We booked this 4 day break last minute with Bowens. When we arrived we were some what disappointed as the frontage of the hotel was very old fashioned and tired. But, once inside what a pleasant suprise. It has had a complete refurbishment. The bar is lovely with hops and sky and the ballroom is a good size. The receptionist was friendly and the staff helped with our luggage. Our room was a decent size & very clean, with a comfortable bed and sky. The food & restaurant was first class, yes traditional with limited choices but it was all homemade and very tasty, and you wont go hungry as the portions were very generous. Breakfast again couldn't be faulted, very good choice and served with a smile in a bright clean refurbished restaurant. Two of the four nights had live entertainment on in the ballroom and another night offered a quiz and bingo with wine up for grabs as a prize! Sadly I didn't win this time... but good fun all the same. The hotel is a short (10-15minute walk from town) close to the esplande. When you consider we only paid £90.00 each for four nights dinner, bed & breakfast you really can't complain... I would definately return it was a great break (even the weather was good) all in all a complete bargin!! The only minor niggles we had was that our room didn't have the best view and the dinner choices were limited to four or five options per course. Also, the blonde lady (Owner?) was telling us that the hotel had more refurbishments planned... including a new frontage!!

Arrived at this hotel thinking , well it is only for one night we can manage. We came away wishing that we had stayed for longer. The hotel was friendly clean and very homely. The food was very good and plenty of it and hot, there was a very accomplished singer/ comedian on... more
