Fresh and Clean
Have just returned from the Fenix Hotel in Sunny Beach (Sep 08) We found the hotel above our expectations. It was very clean and tidy and the room were a decent size with a lovely bathroom and views (over the sea - make sure you are pool side). The maids cleaned the room everyday - although appeared quite reluctant to leave us additional soaps... and we had more than enough space for everything. The hotel staff were all very welcoming and we had no problems with them. From reading the other reviews we were expecting the food to be a little basic so we were not shocked. To be honest the breakfast is fine, lots on offer (hot and cold) but at dinner time it was the same meal every night and if you didnt get there early it was quite slim pickings in the evening. We found the food fine but became a little tired of the selection and although we were half board we would eat out elsewhere - as it was cheap we didnt feel we were wasting money Going on appearances the hotel would definitely rate amongst the best in the area and the pool was much nicer than others on offer. Location wise the hotel was right on the beach so was perfect and was just far enough from the main strip of bars in the town centre that it was not too loud at night One point, the "fitness room" left a little to the imagination, it was a large room with no equipment that still worked except a couple of free weights...but then it provided the perfect excuse to not do any exercise!
Nice hotel, Pity about the food
Just got back from sunny beach Bulgaria, stayed at the fenix hotel and found it to be a very good hotel apart from the fact there was no entertainment at all.We checked out the hotel through trip adviser and found the information very accurate. The main problem with this hotel is the food, it is not bad quality it's just the same every mealtime . After a week we did complain to the rep who had a word with the manager and they usually put on an extra dish, but if you didn't get to the restaurant early the "Guest Dish" was all gone. Sunny beach as a whole is very commercialised and noisey and not as cheap as it was.
beware
Just back from hotel Fenix. Food was bland and the same day after day. Soup was tasteless except for the grease. All smoking restaurant. Plenty of poolside loungers but no side tables and only 6 brollies.Rooms are not remotely soundproof and good neighbours are essential. No monitoring of poolside behaviour. Drinks in glass tumblers and bottles were taken to the poolside. Guys in the pool and smoking cigarettes. Changed room at the front of the hotel after first night. Disco in the bar Fenix goes on till 4 am. Was moved to the back of the hotel where the poolside bar plays boom bang music till 3 am.Was moved to the 4th floor where the shower tray backed up the drains in the toilet. You would wake up in the morning and step into the toilet where the floor was wet, then into the shower area which was still under 1 inch of water.Complained the first day but it was still the same on day 14 What's on in the hotel?..Well, nothing actually. There's a smallish bar where for 24 hours the TV blasts away Boom Bang Music for the pleasure of the staff. 14. Room safes were expensive to hire.No tea making facility in the rooms
Save money, just go b&b
My partner and I only booked this holiday a few days before we travelled. We had no idea what to expect. The flights were with Balkan airways and were good but if you are the sort of person who needs a meal on board take your own, the food was awful. We arrived at the hotel at 3am and were amazed at how clean and spacious it was, the room was huge, clean and the shower was superb, really hot and very powerful, we were overlooking the hotel entrace and asked to be moved to overlook the pool which they did with no fuss at all, The pool area is cramped but we always managed to get a sunbed if we needed one. There is no entertainment in the hotel but this is not a problem as there is so much to do in Sunny Beach and it is also much more expensive to drink in the hotel. The food did leave a lot to be desired though, we found the breakfasts were adequate, either the usual fried breakfast or the continental, nothing elaborate but definatley edible, the evening meal was not really worth having though, very repetitive and not very exciting, a bit to homely. Well worth a trip is Nessebar just a short bus drive away. Just stunning the bus takes 15 mins BUT WATCH YOUR PURSES AND WALLETS...The bus is packed and the pickpockets push on put there hand in you bag and get off again. I found someones hand in my bag and was given a very threatening look by the pickpockets as they got off the bus I felt cowardly because I didnt say anything and later an elderly lady realised she had her purse stolen, We loved Sunny Beach and we never went to bed before 3am, not bad when really when we are in our late 40's early 50's.... would definately go back to the Fenix and to Bulgaria.
Top hotel
Hotel fenix was all i could wished for and more, great location, close to beach and resort centre.Room was big and well equiped-sat tv,fridge/minibar,deposit box and air con, cleaned daily.nice pool area and bar. Food was good and somthing for everyone although a little repetive.hotel is suitable for all ages.
lovely hotel
We actually booked into the Pomporovo Hotel, but on arrival was informed that the hotel was overbooked and we had been upgraded to the 4* Fenix Hotel. Thankk God!!!! The Fenix was a lovely hotel, and the Pomporovo was awful looking. The rooms were large and airy and importantly had air con!! The pool was large and everything was very clean. Maid service was daily. The only complaint i have is with breakfast, it was trully awful, but we just ate out. Food and drink is incredibly cheap. We found the best restaurants to be in the big hotels, the Iberostars and the Barcelo. Sunny Beach is rife with Mosquitoes, so ensure to take repellant. There are hundreds of bars and restaurants. We went in season and it's true that you can get a pint for 30p. We travelled with family, our ages ranged from 26 to 74 and we all enjoyed our stay. The older people preferred the nearby town of Nessebar, which has many restaurants and is very picturesque and has hundreds of little shops. We would go to Sunny Beach again, and we would stay at the Fenix, or the Iberostars or Barcelo.

Great Location
Just got back from a week at the Fenix Hotel and I have to agree with all the other comments that have been posted on this website - read them all as I found them really useful and informative - much better than a travel book! The hotel is situated over the road from the beach, and not far from Nessebar but far enough away from the centre of Sunny Beach. The food at the hotel is as bland as previously wriiten and yes, it is cheap to eat out with plenty of choices including pizzas (2 Lev per slice), baked potatoes, ice creams (less than 1 Lev) and meat kebabs. There is no entertainment at the hotel but on the 2nd floor there is a pool table, computer games area and a small gym. The local beer is as cheap as mentioned before but imported bottles are a bit more expensive but still cheaper than here, the local cigarettes are cheaper too - about 26 Lev for 200 and available in all supermarkets (most are open 24 hours) but some charge a bit more for water, crisps, sweets, etc so shop around. The rooms are basic but clean and include hairdryer, air conditioning and a minifridge (drinks were in it but there was no price list and it was emptied on our last night) but no kettle. Our room was on the 10th floor which was ok but it was facing the street which can be noisy with clubbers late at night (ask for a room overlooking the pool) however the double glazing worked well. The rooms were cleaned and towels changed every day. We hired a safety deposit box as advised by the Rep for 38 Lev (worth it for the piece of mind) The hotel has a doctor available on 24 hour call which was good in case of an emergency. There is a charge for the sun beds on the beach (6 Lev per bed/parasol), 18 Lev for all day hire. There are free sun beds at the hotel but they have usually all gone by breakfast. The water sports are also cheap, working out to about £15 (40 Lev) for parasailing; there are also jet skis, banana boats etc. The sea is great as it so warm and clear. You can walk out for 20 feet or more and it will only be up to your ankles - so safe for kids. The central beach is much more crowded and dirty (cigarette ends, wrappers, bottles etc) down towards the centre pier so stay up by the Fenix/Lazur wheel end. The central area gets very busy at night with bar staff trying to get you in with BOGOF drinks offers. There are lots of people milling about and leaflets thrust at you, it's quite harmless so just say no! Another tip is to take English money to pay for any trips as it works out a couple of quid cheaper, and when there are 4 of you it adds up to the equivalent of a meal out! Go to Nessebar by bus as it is easy and less than 15p each way. They have a conductor that gives change, and they are used to tourists. The bus signs are in English so you know where to stand (by the Arda hotel, and an aqua park bus stop) The restaurants are a bit more expensive there but still nice. If you go back by boat it costs 15 Lev (approx £5.70) but they don't tell you how much until you start sailing as then you can't change your mind. We heard that some people had problems with taxis overcharging so bear this in mind when using and also the hired scooters can be a nuisance as they are so quiet and the kids that hire them don't use any lights so be aware! All mobile phones work in the area and finally, put on insect repellent at the airport as this was the only place I was bitten! We had good time and would recommend going to Bulgaria, before it changes to the Euro (1 LEV = 38p) and to stop at the Fenix hotel for the location. I hope you find this information useful.
Good for 18-30's not for families!
Just back from a week in Hotel Fenix. I'd recommend the hotel if you're after a no frills affair! Rooms were very spacious and clean but nothing to extravagent, quite basic. Food was terrible! - great if you like roast chicken, roast port or roast beef everynight of your holiday! You also have to get in early cause they do "run out". Staff's attitude leaves a lot to be desired, I had a problem, and was greeted by the "we don't care" brigade on reception, who continued to have a conversation (clearly about me) in bulgarian whilst I was waiting. English isn't all that great.(but better than my bulgarian!) No Entertainment at all. Sunny beach itself was good, lots of sun sea sand and extremely cheap booze! Lots of buy one get one free offers on drink and cocktails. I'd say a good club 18-30's desitantion, maybe not so good for families or people who want luxury and to be spoiled!
Fenix Hotel Great location for 18-30s
Just back from our stay at the Fenix Hotel, Sunny Beach. Room clean and spacious. Food bland, we ate out most night as it's so cheap. No entertainment in this hotel. No sun beds left after 9am. Good location if you don't mind a bit of noise. Great location for 18 - 30s.
