My boyfriend and I often visit this part of Cornwall as his parents live close by, we have tried to stay at the farm but they are always fully booked, so we were absolutely delighted when there was a room available on our last trip.
When we arrived the promise of tea and cake failed to happen.
My boyfriend is (unfortunately) a smoker and at about 23:15 he went out for a quick cigarette in the garden, away from the house. Shortly after he returned back to the room Charles was banging on the door, after the door was opened he angrily said "are you smoking in there?" as if we were naughty teenagers. After my boyfriend had made it clear that he had smoked outside, away from the house, Charles began to speak in a loud voice and waving his arms stating "you are not to smoke anywhere in on the premises". I totally understand this rule and if he had mentioned it on arrival or indeed there were signs anywhere I would have backed him up, are we psychic? It was not what he said to us, it was more the tone and the way he directed his anger on us, we were paying guests and it was not necessary to make us feel like children.
We were later told via email (which again was of an aggressive, rude tone) that there was a sentence about not smoking on the website (if you were to scroll to the bottom on one of the many pages) and that it was also hidden somewhere in the brochure that was left on the window sill. Not something I tend to read when I get into a room.
With the mood brought down, we went to bed feeling a bit like we had just been told off by our grandparents.
We decided not to have breakfast in the morning, as we had had a long weekend and wanted a nice lie in before we departed back to London. At 8am we had yet ANOTHER bang on the door asking us what we wanted for breakfast as we hadn't filled out the form (other B&Bs get the message that you don't want breakfast), after we had said that we didn't want breakfast we were told "well check out is at 10:30", again, in a very unfriendly tone.
We actually couldn't wait to leave, we were made to feel like troublesome teenagers.
The farm is beautiful and had potential to be one of the best places I have stayed in.
We are in our 30s and it is apparent that they have a problem with anyone under the age of 50.
Such a shame.
The Ednovean House next door isn't quite as glamorous but the people are so much more welcoming and they have a great garden with a brilliant view.

Management response from c. taylor, owner 01 Sep 2009

We are genuinely distressed that our concern for our guests should be interpreted in such a negative way. Fire in historic buildings is always something that requires vigilance. Ednovean is widely advertised as a non-smoking B&B, so to be awakened, near midnight, by unexplained smoke in our bedroom naturally brought a response. Charles, who is the designated fire officer, tracked the source to the lobby outside your bedroom door and he needed (legally) to ascertain that there was not indeed a fire in your room. At the very least, continued smoke would have triggered the buildings smoke alarms, awaking all the hotels guests, but more lethally, there could have been a tragic accident. Breakfast I must admit bemuses me. Our guests are always asked to let us know, in advance, if they would like something special from the breakfast menu or if they would prefer freshly baked morning goods delivered to their room. Since, the previous day, you had been so excited at the prospect of locally smoked kippers for breakfast, we assumed, that with the disturbed night, you had simply forgotten to place your order. Charles took the time to check, so you would not be disappointed, particularly as you had a long drive back to London. However it would seem that his kindness was misinterpreted. It is so disheartening that you found us interfering and grumpy - one of the great joys of a bed and breakfast, compared to a hotel is the interaction between owner and guest. Many of our guests, across all age groups, have over the years become firm and valued friends, so it saddens us, when our efforts have fallen on such stoney ground.
