We had a 2 day trip to Rome at the beginning of our January Holiday and found a complete gem. Searching entirely by price and going for the cheapest, on the grounds that it was only somewhere to sleep, we found the Hotel Ines on the Late Rooms site. We expected it to be seedy and possibly even squalid for the price, which was less than half the average.
It was difficult to find, not even having a hotel sign outside; and, although very near to the main Termini Station was in an exceptionally unsalubrious-looking area, with graffitti on the walls and broken pavements. We found the right number, but it was clearly a private apartment block.
We rang the owner, who came to meet us and let us in.
The lobby confirmed our worst fears - very shabby, with an ancient and dangerous-looking lift. The rooms were, indeed, what had been originally a 2 bed-roomed apartment, now divide by the simple expedient of adding a lock to each bedroom door, leaving the kitchen and bathroom shared.
But what a contrast to the grey surroundings!
The first thing that struck us was that it was pleasantly warm (it was a very cold and wet day).
Then the owner, a delightful and charming man, who spoke English fluently, showed us the first room. I nearly took it on the spot, since it had a proper 4-poster bed in it with proper curtains and was beatifully-appointed. However, we decided to look at the other one. This was sumptuous! Beautiful Morroccan covers and hangings in rich reds, browns and golds. We were hooked.
It was quite the most delightful hotel I have ever stayed in, made even better by the self-catering facilities. What a luxury to have coffee in bed without having to order room service in a foreign language when you're still half-asleep.
It is situated literally a couple of minute's walk from the main train station. The owner's restaurant is a very short walk away and is absolutely excellent and not expensive.
I cannot reccommend this place highly enough. We will certainly stay there on all future visits to Rome.
