Unfortunately my stay at the Comnte Borrell 41 - Barcelona, Spain managed by BCN Market Inn Rooms & Apartments (link one, two) was one of the worst if not the worst in 15 years traveling. If I could leave a negative feedback I would.
The bad impression started when I arrived at the “hostel”. Instead of the manager or any of the English speaking people that I had spoken on the phone prior to my arrival to arrange a time to check in the room, was the cleaning lady, who didn’t speak any English at all.
After trying to understand each other, she called someone, with whom I talked on the phone and he explained to her, that I would pay in 2 parts the full amount of the money. The first day I gave her 170 euros. Foolishly I didn’t ask for a receipt. Later that day I found out that the bathroom, was full red brick dust that is found when someone drills holes on the wall. (as a cleaning lady didn’t make much to earn her salary) and the waste water tubes of the bathroom sink were dripping, keeping the floor always wet.
The next day and about one hour before she comes back I made the mistake to sit at the lower right corner of the bed. I say mistake, because in a blink of an eye I was on the floor and the bed had one less leg. Later looking at the bed legs closely, revealed that whoever assembled this IKEA bed, had absolutely no clue since both right legs were assembled not vertically but in a angle and as soon as I sat on it, couldn’t take my weight and gave in. I also noticed the wardrobe doors, also from IKEA, wouldn’t close and the assembly was shaky making my argument about whoever assemble them, not having a clue, stronger.
In any case the cleaning lady came and I gave another 150.5 euros expecting 10-euro change. Still there was 0 communication but with the help of a Spanish guy that came in that day translating, I was expecting the next day a receipt and change. Again I was fool not to demand it on the spot, but I never had to ask for my change when I go to restaurants, cafes or stores. Does any of you? I also showed her the bed, and we tried to fix it but no luck. I simply put the mattress on the floor.
The next day the cleaning lady comes and asks for another 40 euros, supposedly I gave her 100.5 instead of 150.5. This time since I did not understand what she was saying the manager decided to show up telling me that I had to give them 40 euros as she said, “because if he was not seeing at the broken bed, he wouldn’t think of it at all, but…” since we broke the bed (which was not correctly assembled in the first place) we had to pay the money. Even when I showed him the feet of the bed, which had no marks from full contact with the floor, didn’t seem to comprehend the facts.
He told me that it was strange I didn’t ask for my change (implying that since I gave 100.5 instead of 150.5 euros, I wouldn’t ask for change). Well I NEVER ASK FOR change, THEY ALWAYS give me without asking.
In the end, i gave the money, and i slept the remaining days on the mattress on the floor...
I am a proud member of the www.couchsurfing.com, www.hospitalityclub.org www.place2stay.net, and www.globalfreeloaders.com. I also sell things on Ebay and I can proudly say that when it comes to trust, there are over 200 people out there who have put their trust on me by staying in my house, or allowing me to stay at theirs or buying things from me, AND NOBODY had any problems with me whatsoever.
Something which I cant say for this "hostel". I would suggest anybody to stay as far away as possible.or if not, I strongly advice to ASK FOR RECEIPT THE MOMENT YOU ARE ASKED TO HAND IN THE MONEY AND DONT GIVE ANYTHING BEFORE YOU GOT IT.
By the way. No laundry was available at the apartment, as it was claimed in the advert, no extra sofas in the living room, at least no sofas usable as beds...
WHAT IS MORE THE MIRROR IN THE APARTMENT IS IN A RATHER DANGEROUS POSITION. AND not nailed on the wall. If you move it accidentaly, it can fall EASILY wounding any unlucky individual...
