We felt very let down by this establishment & its less than friendly owner. The photos make it look great, until you see it for yourself. Shabby entrance where you can only check-in by going through to the restaurant. Led upstairs and saw very old and dirty carpets... more

Booked for four nights but left after one it was so bad. And the owner was rude and unrelenting in his cancellation policy so it cost us £210 to leave but it was worth it. To say what was wrong with this establishment would take too long, but it was not a pleasant or safe... more

I am so glad we stayed here after the new owners took over as we experienced great service and a very comfortable room with all that we could need - and really clean. The hotel is still in need of a little bit of TLC but nothing major. Good hearty breakfast in the morning... more

I was promised by the manager Mr Ramzan that 24 hour parking was available nearby but when I arrived I had to park on double yellow lines but told, by a polite (I think) Polish girl working at the bar, to wait for the manager who was not available to receive guests. I left... more

We've just returned from four days in Ilfracombe, and I can thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting the area. It's in a great location - very close to the harbour and all local shops and restaurants. The food was excellent. You have a choice of breakfast... more

Great Location - Great Hospitality & Ambience
Centrally located and ideal for all of Devons speldor, Harbour 1 minute away. Hotel bar & restuarant just been fully refurbished and fantastic! Our room was large and adequate and had all new soft furnishings, food and service great, hospitality and friendlyness superb and would highly reccomend.

Thank you for your review. Your comments are much appreciated and we hope to welcome you back one day to The Capstone.

Value for money - great location - super staff
A great location next to the harbour - no hills for Granny to walk up. Great staff and excellent brekky - a great restaruant for lunch and dinner too. The rooms were clean and tidy, albeit in need of a makevoer (which I undertsand they plan for next season). But for the price totally acceptbale. And don't let the lack of parking put your off - the public car park is a minutes walk away and cheap at the top end. If you want to be down near the harbour and beaches, if you want relaxed and friendly service, and if you want good value for money this is the place.

Thank you for your review. We enjoy what we do and when we read reviews like these - it makes it all worthwhile!

We had a good stay at the Capstone Hotel
We stayed at the Capstone Hotel for 2 nights having booked at the last minute. We had 2 bedrooms with an interconnecting door which was nice to have a family type set up but in separate rooms so we had some privacy. The bedrooms were newly carpeted and painted although the furniture is dated but on talking to the owners we found out that extensive refurbishment is ongoing. The shower was good and we had expensive toilet roll! The full english breakfast was good with butchers sausages locally made for the restaurant. The bread was freshly baked and it is possible to have brown or white toast. The staff are very friendly and try to help if they can. This is a value for money hotel and it is not part of a chain. Rooms are not serviced every day unless you want this. This is much better for the environment as the towels are only washed when they need it. I am sure that the Capstone will continue to improve as the refurbishment progresses as the guys who own it have the right attitude and want to make their guests stay a success. You can have free WiFi in your room and you can have tea and coffee facilities in your room or it is available in the Guest Lounge. There are alot of stairs and no lift but I am large and managed it. The hotel is well situated for the local restaurants and the harbour. There is car parking nearby which wasnt too expensive.

Thank you for your review. We try to be "green" wherever we can - and it is always good when our guests can see our efforts and appreciate where we are trying to get to. You point out many of our services and we aim to add more to these as time goes by.

Terrible Meal
We ate here on a recommendation and it was truely the worst meal that we have ever eaten. Stone cold plates from the 1960's were at odds with the super modern new fixtures and fittings. Cold food, poor portion size, poor presentation, iffy service and a nice fat bill at the end! Its trying to be something that it isn't....it could be lovely, good location, nice inside but the food is just cafe poor rather than retro chic!

Thank you for your review, it is a shame you did not enjoy your meal at the restaurant. As you say you were recommended the restaurant by someone who obviously enjoyed their meal. In circumstances such as these, it is always best to let the restaurant know what was actually wrong with the meal at the time. We have several dishes on our menu which are served warm/cold this includes oysters, warm scallops, warm tiger prawns, warm chicken salad etc. and that could be the reason the guest's plate was not hot. The choice of crockery, decor etc is all very subjective, some people love the fact that we serve our meals on original Dudson crockery and not on plain white plates, like everyone else, and that our cutlery is from a design that dates back over 50 years and is a Viners classic. It is good to know that you found the decor appealing with the "super modern fixtures and fittings ". You will also note from a previous review, that they did not like the decor at all! It is so difficult to get it right for everyone. All we can do is do our best, and that we will continue to do.

Very Welcoming
Stayed at The Capstone for a single night in August on our way back to London from Cornwall. Ilfracombe is a charming town well worth a visit for a day or 2. Robert & Minaz (the owners) were very welcoming and couldn't have done more to make us feel at home. We only had breakfast in the newly refurbished restaurant but it was excellent. When we passed through the restaurant in the evening it was full so is obviously vetry popular The room we were given was a little dated but freshly decorated with new carpets, and was spotlessly clean. Minaz did mention that the full room refurbishment is all part of the overall plan that hasn't quite taken place yet! I would recommend The Capstone without hesitation.

Thank you so much for your review, I am so pleased that you managed to see the overall picture and enjoy your stay with us. Your comments go a long way to help our team to keep delivering the cleanliness that our guests expect. I am glad that you enjoyed the breakfast, we would rather offer a smaller breakfast menu and freshly cook that well. We hope to see you again in lovely Ilfracombe!

Think twice before taking this option!
I have never bothered to write a hotel review but I really feel strongly that future potential guests should be warned about The Capstone. Unless you are searching for an extremely uncomfortable stay, do not stay here! Our room was at the very top of many, many stairs, surrounded on the outside by a view of scaffolding and an entire family of noisy giant seagulls who liked to make a raquet from about 10pm and starting up at around 5 am for that early morning wakeup call you want on a long weekend away! Old and small with slanted windows that did not stay up and let in cold draughts (on complaint we were told we could not change rooms but had one of the managers shove toilet paper in the window to keep it up! - come on guys, we are paying good money to stay here!), old carpets that smelt of damp, even in the bathroom, beige old school bathroom facilities and bedroom furntiure from the 50s or 60s reminded me of going to a very poorly off old person's home. The bed was another story altogether with no bedhead and enough springs coming through to send myself and the husband straight to a pysio this week! Oh and yes, there was a lovely flat screen tv as mentioned in the hotel write up however in our room you could not watch it as it could not be turned around to face the bed on the old piece of poorly designed furntiure it was placed upon, and only had BBC options anyway! The room was not cleaned in the 3 days. I do not think you should have to hand in your key (the one and only we were told upon arrival, do not lose it or we will have to call the locksmith!) and ask for your room to be made up when on holiday. I love a good breakfast and this was not good. With about 6 different versions of the classic English fry up, all of which came with one lousy slice of toast (two pieces on the menu actually translates to one slice cut in two!), and only a fried egg (no scrambled, no poached). The first morning breakfast came out looking and tasting like it had been cooking for a good 20 minutes! These eggs were as hard as plastic. By the third morning we just didn't even bother! Who is cooking the breakfasts back there? Definately need to get a chef in to do that or just someone who can cook. Making a fried egg is not that hard! I have to say on the only positive was that we did eat dinner one night in the restuarant and that was great. A good value tasty meal of soup, steak and prawns. Check out the restaurant by all means but pay a bit more and stay somewhere else! Not worth the discomfort!

Thank you so much for your review. We have never had any complaints about the beds in our hotel - we feel that one bad bed review is one too many ,and we have already instigated a new mattress for the room. As far as the seagulls are concerned, Ilfracombe is a sea side resort, and the gull's are just a part of sea side life. Love them or loathe them, there is very little one can do about them! Many, many of our guests tell us that they like the policy on room servicing, we have absolutley no issues with servicing guests rooms, all we need is a nod and the key passed to us when a guest is leaving for the day. ALL the carpets in the guest rooms are brand new. The guests breakfast was cooked fresh to order. We have choices of Porridge with or without banana and honey, cereals, full or light breakfasts, Smoothies, Orange juices as well as breakfast sandwiches. We have a full Cafe Bar menu also available which includes paninis, further sandwich options, salads etc. many of the items are included in the b&b rate. We were notified at 23.30 on Sunday night, after the guests meal, that the guests (previosuly working) window lock was now broken. This was the last night of their stay and at that hour there were not many options open to us. They had not mentioned anything prior to this about any concerns. We managed the issue in the best way we could at that time of night. The guest thanked us for sorting it out, but still wanted to move rooms. We had no spare rooms available and therefore were not able to accomadate their request. We are pleased that the guests enjoyed their meal at the restaurant downstairs. The meal was cooked and delivered by the same chef team that delivers our freshly cooked breakfasts.

these realy nice guys need to try harder
television did not work shaving light did not work bathroom mirror fitted by a midget, the view from the bathroom window was disgusting, bathroom door did not close, no headboard on the bed, bedside light worked only when it wanted to no tea or coffee in the room, the room was not serviced at all during our stay. breakfast seemed to have been coocked sometime earlier that morning. Come on lads your better than this,
Management response from TheCapstone 23 Jul 2009

Thanks for your reviews guys. We always like to get feedback so that we may better our services for our guests. If we are made aware of things like bulbs that need replacing in rooms, we are more than happy to replace these, and any other issues. We would have been more than happy to even offer another room. I am afraid that as far as mirrors go, well these do have to be in a position where all guests can use them - I think you can appreciate that. We offer full tea and filter coffee making facilities in the guest lounge and are more than happy to provide in room facilities if that is a guests preference. We clearly state in our welcome pack that rooms are only serviced if a guest requests this, a lot of guests like this option as it gives them complete privacy. I think your girlfriend asked for your breakfast even though you were still in your room, we asked if she wanted the ticket held until you were ready but she said no, and the breakfast must have gone cold. Roberts breakfasts are cooked to order, as mentioned by other reviews. I am very surprised at the ratings, we are seconds away from the Harbour, a rating of two does seem a little unfair - however, we try hard to offer a good hotel for our guests to enjoy, we have dvd libraries, book libraries, a cafe, a restaurant and clean rooms with good facilities. A five star hotel, we are not, but we are a comfortable base in the heart of Ilfracombe.

Thanks guys for a great stay!!
We ended up at the Capstone Hotel almost by accident, booking last minute on Late Rooms, but it turned out to be one of our better decisions! Not only is the Hotel in an ideal location to explore Ilfracombe and the local area, but Minaz and Robert treated us less as guests and more as old friends. The bar and restaurant were tastefully decorated ( especially the choice of colour in the cafe / bar!). We ate dinner and breakfast in the Hotel, and the quality and choice were excellent, - it's also great to see so much locally sourced produce on the menu. The room itself was clean, spacious and comfortable. Although it was a little basic, the rooms are still a work in progress, but we will definitely be returning to see the finished result. Thanks guys for a great stay!!

Thank your for your review. It is always a pleasure when people pay us such compliments. We worked very hard to get the ground floor looking cool, contemprorary and comforatable and it is great when people can see that. Our location really is great and makes it very easy for our guests to sample the delights of Ilfracombe. Thankyou so much for your recognition of our locally sourced produce, it really does make a difference. We look forward to seeing you again - soon!

Truly wonderful hotel and restaurant - don't miss it!
My mum chose this hotel as a base near the harbour when we went to Ilfracombe recently on a 4 day visit with my gran. I can't properly express how good the service is - Minaz and Robert were so kind and always smiling. Our holiday wouldn't have been the same without them, and they kept three generations happy! The food is amazing. With the B&B you can choose what you like off the breakfast menu, and everything we tried was tasty and well presented. The coffee is the best I've had too. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the food was lovely. I had the chicken wrapped in proscuitto with sage jus which was very good. My mum had the duck salad (which they even cooked well done for her because she doesn't like pink duck - the philistine!) My gran had the fish & chips which really was something special. We finished by sharing a slice of the chocolate & guiness cake, which was absolutely fabulous. The hotel is currently being redecorated, and therefore the room was basic but clean. Anything extra that we wanted in the room was sorted out for us on request. I have a feeling that when all the work is finished this hotel will be truly top notch, and probably well out of my price range! In conclusion, I'd fully recommend the hotel and restaurant and hope to be back there soon for another visit. One tip - if you need parking, then enter the harbour car park but keep driving straight through (it takes you round to the right of the harbour and up a slight hill) until you get to the Marina Drive car park. It only costs £3 for 24 hours.

The most amazing dining experience
Although we weren't fortunate enough to say overnight at the Capstone we dined in the very stylish restaurant. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and most importantly the food is amazing! Robert thank you for recommending (and cooking!) the Pollock, it was the first time I had ever tried it and it was a sheer delight. I would recommend everyone to sample the delicious food at the Capstone. Minaz and Robert you are both great hosts, huge thanks for making our 1st wedding anniversary even more special. We look forward to visitng the Capstone again very soon.
Management response from TheCapstone 06 Jul 2009
