Nothing like the hotel photos!!

We felt very let down by this establishment & its less than friendly owner. The photos make it look great, until you see it for yourself. Shabby entrance where you can only check-in by going through to the restaurant. Led upstairs and saw very old and dirty carpets throughout. Looks like a very run-down B&B of yesteryear. Rooms didn't look professionally decorated and not what expected at all. It claims to also be the ONLY hotel in the Harbour area, this simply is not true. We saw 2 others, one of which directly overlooked the harbour! Why say you are the only one in that area unless you are the type to try and act in a less than ethical manner. Didn't eat in the restaurant as it was always empty, not a good sign. Overall, we would NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone, we felt conned.

One of the worst experiences we've ever had - don't bother

Booked for four nights but left after one it was so bad. And the owner was rude and unrelenting in his cancellation policy so it cost us £210 to leave but it was worth it. To say what was wrong with this establishment would take too long, but it was not a pleasant or safe place to stay. Windows screwed shut, no smoke alarms in the room or landing, no storage space for clothes other than a hanging rail, very poor breakfast, very rude owner who sent a rediculously rude and unprofessional email in reply to our complaints. Avoid it if you can - there are many many nice places to stay in Ilfracombe but this isn't one of them.

I am so glad we stayed here after the new owners took over as we experienced great service and a very comfortable room with all that we could need - and really clean. The hotel is still in need of a little bit of TLC but nothing major.
Good hearty breakfast in the morning set my boyfriend up for the day - and the porridge did me just fine - and the restaurant is just lovely.

Don't know how to run a hotel? Don't run one.

Informed hotel on telephone booking that companion required walk in shower due to impairment difficulties and one reason for choice of hotel was it's location on flat terrain close to facilities to assist companion.
On arrival, hotel had many stairs leading up to location of the rooms. Walk in shower required companion to squeeze against wall next to toilet to open its door. Very helpful, not... Room's windows were very old, sash style which could not be closed fully (and had not been cleaned in a very, very long time). A very nois pub was very close which had live, loud music events every night, with its clientele remaining outside the pub laughing and talking into the early hours of the morning. Due to no double glazing and windows that could not be closed, hotel guests might as well have been across the road at the pub, the noise was so intrusive.
Room cleanliness was poor but just about acceptable, if you don't mind chipped toilet seats, no bath mat in a smooth-based bath with overhead shower to add the lethal edge to your morning ablusions, no hairdryer in the room (until requested), or some woman's knickers scrunched up in the bedside cabinet for who knows how long...
It must be much harder to go wrong with a standard breakfast than to do it right? It tasted terrible and was mostly uneaten on the first morning. Next morning's breakfast order avoided the horror and played safe with egg and toast, then just toast after that. A discount voucher for their restaurant was placed in the room but, on experiencing the sad attempt at breakfast, there was no chance of risking good money for an evening meal there.
Good points? The staff were friendly and polite. Sorry guys, that just doesn't make up for the overall very poor experience.

Worst Ever

I was promised by the manager Mr Ramzan that 24 hour parking was available nearby but when I arrived I had to park on double yellow lines but told, by a polite (I think) Polish girl working at the bar, to wait for the manager who was not available to receive guests. I left and found day only parking some distance away and returned to eventually get booked in: The manager seemed unconcerned / unapologetic when another guest had said they had received a parking ticket as a consequence. The hotel is in poor condition, fire exits are locked and there are areas with unprotected work in progress. The room is at best dirty with months of black stain below the water line on the toilet and a shower curtain arrangement that would not stay together; the windows are disgusting and have never been cleaned. There are no tea making facilities or phone in the room and no overnight staff or even an emergency contact number (£60 a night and let yourself and anyone else in or out) and single access only to the room or the street. The breakfast is only available from 9am when local(ish) car parking is about to expire: The manager didn't turn up till 9am (exactly) to start breakfast and when I expressed concern about parking he was rude in the extreme and this rudeness continued until 9:15 so no one got breakfast as the other guests also left (I imagine embarrassed by his outbursts) as he ignored my continual requests to stop arguing with me and just cook breakfast. He wasn’t interested in my concerns and just seemed set on shouting me down with the intermittent use of "Sir" as superficial politeness - Put simply he was overbearing and rude. During this exchange he offered a refund but withdrew this offer with more abuse when I accepted. On my return home I complained to bookings.com and Mr Ramzan immediately countered with a barrage of ridiculous counter claims viz. I stole the room keys, smoked in the room, broke the shower and (worst of all) spread excrement in the room. This is why I have left this complaint / feedback for one week in order to cancel my credit card details and prevent this man taking money for damages(limited only by his ridiculous imagination)from the card details left as security when I foolishly agreed to stay at the Capstone. Good luck if you ignore this, it was singularly my worst ever experience.

  • Advice: Nice seaside town - To be recommended
  • Activities: coastal views and friendly locals - Beyond the Capstone of course

We've just returned from four days in Ilfracombe, and I can thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting the area.
It's in a great location - very close to the harbour and all local shops and restaurants.
The food was excellent. You have a choice of breakfast options for the b&b and we also ate in the restaurant one night - very impressive.
But the best thing about this hotel is the service. You won't find a friendlier, more welcome atmosphere anywhere, and all three generations of my family left feeling that we'd made some good friends.
One tip - there are several car parks near by, but if you drive up the hill to the right of the harbour you'll find Marine Park car park which only costs £3 for 24 hours. Enjoy!
