A proper Italian hotel...
10 / 10
Jun 2009, BarryK

As a boy I visited Italy with my parents and older sister in the 1960s and from memory, this hotel is exactly what I remember as a "proper" Italian hotel. Family run by Paolo (speaks English German and of course Italian!) and his wife with their bambino it is charming, pleasant and functional.
In this instance we were booked in by the operators of a football tour for the Under 15 team which I manage and in total 6 adults and 14 boys stayed for three nights over the weekend 29th May to 1st June 2009.
We were made very welcome and food served was in the traditional Italian style, with three complimentary courses making up a full meal rather than trying to cram all your food on one plate like we do in the UK! The three courses are not a blow out like you would get on a restaurant night out, but were filling without coming away feeling absolutely stuffed. If you wanted any more of anything, no problem.
The hotel is situated up a narrow side street off the main road and behind a bar and a paper shop, so you could easily drive past it (turn immediate left at the Hotel Golfo), around 50 yards from the edge of the lake at the big church on the bend of the road in Maderno. Some rooms have a balcony view over the Lake, the ones that don't give an almost medieval view of the terracotta rooflines and either is picturesque.
Don't go expecting a jacuzzi and presidential suite but the rooms are clean and big enough with en suite facilities including shower.
It represents great value and I would certainly use it again. It is about 400 yards to the car ferry (you don't have to have a car of course)which goes across the Lake to Torre del Benaco if you are up for some exploring of places like Garda, Bardolino and Lesize, all beautiful in their own right.
No sky football but nice bars and pizzeria if you go B&B, nightlife, well it isn't one of those places but you can relax in the hotel bar lounge before you set off again on a giro del lago the next day.
