Chose Bo Phut as somewhere with enough facilities to be entertained and well fed in a relaxing atmosphere (ie not craziness of Chaweng !). Fulfilled that, and with great character. Stayed 9 nights which is probably the most I'd recommend -- and for 3 days we had a hire car to easily get round the island and days out.
Smile House is great. Look at Bo Phut on Google Earth / Maps and you'll see that Smile has the best facilities in the actual "Fisherman's Village", ie just a stroll from restaurants etc, without being isolated on the bigger hotels west of there. After Smile is Shades and then 2 building sites for future hotels -- so anything west of Shades must involve walking to the main road and down to the village, which on a hot holiday means 15 mins Taxi. Location and facilities are Smile's strengths.
2 excellent swimming pools - bigger one near the road but behind a hedge; smaller one at the back has welcome shade.
Everything very clean, staff nice, good choice at breakfast in their restaurant by the beach.
