Having read the reviews we went to the Esplanade with no expectations whatsoever. The situation of the Hotel was ideal with spectacular views and a pretty garden area in which to sit. The Hotel entrance is not suitable for infirm people, however, despite Shearings advising... more

Our 4 night break at the Esplanade Hotel fell into 2 catagories. Firstly the hotel itself. From the exterior it was horrible with paint peeling off. Our small room had not been decorated for about 20 years. It had a 1970's feel about it. The wallpaper again had started to... more

The Esplanade Hotel is a 2 star hotel centrally located at the western end of Paignton sea front and is only only a 4 minute walk to the town centre. Our first impression of the exterior was that it poor as it was urgent need of a good coat of paint. Once inside the... more

Excellent stay
We had an all-inclusive break at the Esplanade, and it was one of the best holidays we've had in our lifetime, admittedly the rooms are a little small but what the heck!; they're only to sleep in! Management and staff we found great; nothing was too much trouble and the food and entertainment were superb. Suprised to read the previous review, but why take teenagers with them on holiday, of course they'd find everything "Rubbish", don't they realise Shearings are generally for the over 50's? And how can a sea-view be "rubbish"? You can either see the sea or you can't. Maybe they should try Butlins next time. All in all, a great holiday which I wouldn't hesitate to recommend
worst hotel ever
the hotel was rubbish. the room was ant infested with ants crawling everywhere. the bath room was the size of a cupboard with a tiny toilet and it was a squeeze in the shower. the view was of the back car park. the choice of dinner was limited. the entertainment was rubbish. the view of the sea is rubbish. in general the whole place is rubbish and good at making they residents have a horrible time.
great value
This year there was only fiveteen of us as the youngest brother has gone to Australia to live. The rooms were very good ,maid sevice excellent, room 218 only had a very small bathroom and sink made life difficult when useing, room 226 was tatty needs looking at.but overall very good.On our first night the meal left a lot to be desired but this then changed from then on the food was excellent,if you required more you only had to ask.Sevice throught out was 100%++evening entertainment very good indeed
Pleasantly surprised!
My wife and I booked a last minute [booked Wednesday, travelled Saturday!]with Shearings. The price was good but we had no high expections. There were also some uncomplimentary reviews. We had asked for a double bed and a bath which we got.The room was nicely furnished, clean and well equipped, with T.V. kettle, hair drier and clock radio. The bed was comfortable. The room was quite large as was the bathroom although I heard some en-suites were small. Most Shearings hotels could use a lick of paint but we don`t go for the decor! The staff, mostly local, were very friendly and efficient. Food was good, serving a little slow.Entertainment was very good with visiting cabaret artistes of a high standard and a great compere,Lee,who did something for everyone. He is very talented, both musically and comedy -wise,his impression of Mr Bean should not be missed! There is a decent dance floor,we love dancing! All in all a great, value for money holiday. The coaches broke down twice causing problems but that`s another story!
dont believe all you read
My spouse and I took my two senior sisters for 5 days, the rooms were clean, a bit small but heck they are only to sleep in and the view was excellent The food was good, staff great and entertainment better than our cruise. If I had any complaints it would be that the waiters were slow as they did not appear to have enough staff and certainly no supervision.
Staff lovely but would not recommend the hotel
We travelled with Shearings and while we couldn't fault the staff or coach drivers the rooms at the hotel were not the best especially the 'bathroom' well more like a cupboard and left a lot to be desired, the food wasn't that bad but I have had better not a great deal of choice. The hotel in general was very tired looking and in need of refurbishment. The staff were very helpful and pleasant but apart from them I would not recommend this hotel.
Disappointed, in need of renovation
This hotel is desperately in need of refurbishment, both inside and out. Food OK however service in dining room slow, not enough staff. Ensuite in bedroom very small. On a plus side the resident entertainment was very good.
Not as bad as people make out
We travelled down with Shearings to what was expected after reading the last two reviews but were very satisfied at what we found, yes the outside of the hotel does need renovating and a lick of paint but inside was clean tidy and fairly well in good nick apart from one or two places that needs attention. Our bedroom which was overlooking the sea was clean and acceptable decoration wise, the staff who were mostly from local areas and not foreigners were very helpful and accommodating, it's nice to see Shearings using local people, the meals were excellent and food plenty full and the service very good, the entertainment that we watched was good especially the comedian come ventriloquist, of course there was the inevitable bingo and quizzes, but we gave them a miss. The coach trips out were very enjoyable with our driver Denis being very informative of every where we travelled, all be it he did get us confused some what but all in all he was a great guy and a big asset for the Shearings company, apart from the the weather not being very good as we only had three good sunny days out of eight the holiday was excellent, I cant under stand the last two reviews as you gets what you pay for and being it's only a two star Hotel and we had seven nights there, for the price we paid it was very good ( apart from the bar prices )
In urgent need of redecoration
The Esplanade Hotel looks if has not redecorated inside or out for 30 plus years. Our room was a reasonable size but was rather dirty. The bathroom was microscopic with the smallest hand basin I have ever seen. The food was above what we expected with a choice of 4 starters and main courses. A full English cooked breakfast. waiter service. If you wanted a drink with your meal the pace of the wine waitress made a snail look fast. entertainment 5 nights a weeks which was usually Bingo, followed by a Quiz then a live singer. For the price we paid it was good value and the hotel was in a central position. Shame about the state of decoration in the hotel.
A Hovel, not a Hotel!
Due to my personal circumstances, I booked to stay here alone over New year through Shearings coaches who own the hotel. The bedrooms have not had any work done on them for twenty years at least, the whole place is a disgrace! Stay here at your peril!
