Our 4 night break at the Esplanade Hotel fell into 2 catagories. Firstly the hotel itself. From the exterior it was horrible with paint peeling off. Our small room had not been decorated for about 20 years. It had a 1970's feel about it. The wallpaper again had started to peel and the paintwork had turned fro white to a shade of yellow. The bathroom which consisted of a shower, the smallest hand basin imaginable and toilet was tiny. With the toilet being in such close proximity to everything else it was unhygenic. The room was cleaned but not very well, there was still dust visible agter cleaning.Tea and coffee supplies were replenished daily. The lift was probably the original from when the hotel was built in the early 1900's and it left one wondering whether it would reach its destination. On the plus side the staff were very friendly and efficient with the exception of the bar service which was slow and surly. The food was a good quality albeit the portions were small and if you asked for any more we were told in no uncertain terms "No". The meals were waiter service. The entertainment in the evenings was bingo, followed by a quiz and the a cabaret of sorts. Having been critical we did not think it was expensive and was reasonable value.
- Advice: An old fashioned British seaside resort
- Activities: Datmouth
- Good For: Beach

The Esplanade Hotel is a 2 star hotel centrally located at the western end of Paignton sea front and is only only a 4 minute walk to the town centre. Our first impression of the exterior was that it poor as it was urgent need of a good coat of paint. Once inside the reception staff could be more friendly or helpful. The room was a good size with tea making facilities and a television. The bathroom was rather like a large broom cupboard with a sower, minute hand basin and toilet but no window. The room was cleaned daily. Again a the state of decoration looked if nothing had been done for 15 years plus. The food in the hotel restaurant was very good with 4 choices for the main course for the evening meal with 3 choices for the starter and 4 choices for the dessert plus tea or coffee to finish. The waiter service which was quick and efficient. Do not hod your breath if you want to order to drinks with your meal as this was pathetically slow. We did not want our wine with our dessert. The cooked English Breakfast was again waiter service and was adequate. The entertainment aimed at the over 50's age group and was very acceptable without being spectacular. Our overall view of our 4 day holiday was very good value for money baring in mind you only get what you pay for in life. Our biggest criticism was the whole establishment could do with a redecoration and modernisation.

Having read the reviews we went to the Esplanade with no expectations whatsoever. The situation of the Hotel was ideal with spectacular views and a pretty garden area in which to sit. The Hotel entrance is not suitable for infirm people, however, despite Shearings advising people of this there were still a number of elderly/infirm people struggling up and down the steps with walking sticks and other walking aids. The Hotel was typical of its time, old and rambling. However, the general level of cleanliness was good, our room was approx 4m x 3m, with a comfortable bed and a good size bathroom, with a bath. There was a tea/coffee tray and a clock radio and TV with 5 stations. All the staff were helpful, friendly and efficient. The food was varied, well cooked and tasty with something to suit all tastes. There was a nightly entertainment programme and all the acts were very professional. This holiday, which included 2 and a half days excursions was extremely good value for money and we would not hesitate to return to the Eslanade.
