What a lovely place!
My husband and I stayed for one night on our way to Scotland from Wales with our dog. I booked well in advance and they agreed to take the dog as they were not very busy. What a good choice. The manager was delightful and could not have been more helpful. Suggested where we could walk the dog (fantastic old quarry walk over the road from the pub) We had a great room and the biggest bath I have ever seen! We had a delicious supper and the breakfast was excellent. We were the only people staying, but we were made to feel very welcome. We would... more

lovely hotel, fine food, reasonable prices wonderfull staff
Excellent Hotel
We stayed at this hotel as my husband was taking part in the Great Cumbrian Run. Located in the beautiful cumbrian countryside about 15 minutes outside of Carlisle. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the staff could not do enough; even our request for a late checkout (to enable my husband to shower after the race) was not a problem. Our original plan was to eat in the hotel on the first night and eat elsewhere on the second night. However, we enjoyed the food in the hotel that much that not only did we eat there on both nights, but also... more
Our favorite Hotel during our travels around the UK
The String of Horses was out in the country about 10 miles from a good stretch of Hadrians Wall and 10 miles from Carlisle. I strongly recommend you follow Colins Directions to find the hotel as TomTom did not recognize Faugh...( Faff) although it did find Heads Nook. The area around the hotel is beautiful and made for a greak walk...The Hotel is run by Colin and anything you need he will do to make your stay the best possible... he even lent me a printer for a bit of work I had to do in my room!.There is WIFI throughout the hotel .The food... more
Great nigh tto round of our trip to Isle of Harris
Well, we really did burn some rubber to get to the ancient String of Horses after disembarking off the ferry from Tarbet, Isle of Harris to Uig, Isle of Skye, in time for a lovely evening meal! Anyway, we did it, we were ready for our meal and some fine wine to wash it down with. On arrival at 8.30 pm (large car park was nearly full), we were just in time for a wash and brush up and down to the oak panelled bar and dining area for our meal. The staff were very accommodating even though it was nearly 9 pm by the time we ordered our... more
Very pleasant and relaxed stay
My partner and I and our friends stayed here over the early May bank holiday weekend in 2008. We knew pretty much what to expect from the official website. Our first impression was that the inn was a little on the dark side but once in the pub and bedrooms everything was fine and bright enough. Our room (room one) had a modern bath whereas our friends' room did not so it may worth requesting a room with a bath (especially as this was the better room of the two and was slightly more modern in its decor). As well as a nice breakfast... more
beautiful old english inn
This pub is stunning, very old and authentic, with lovely open fires all around it. The new landlord and landlady are very friendly, as are all of the staff. i understand they have very recently taken over, but the food we had was lovely (fajitas), and my boyfriend said the beer was very good too! Overall a really friendly place, and we would definately stay there again when we were in the area!
Could have been better.
My brother had his hotel reception here which was lovely, as my children and i lived a good few miles down the road we decided to stay the night in the family room which we booked over he phone, we were quoted £60 for the room instead of the normal £90 which we were pleased about. The room however, had a really acrid musty smell as if there had been a leak in the on-suite. The glasses in the bathroom were filthy as were the cups for the coffee and tea making facilities. There was mould on the inside of the leaded window in the... more
Fantastic!
The String of Horses is stunning. A traditional Country Inn that has been there since 1659. Beautiful surroundings, excellent value for money, outstanding service and hospitality. Near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall and only 30 minutes from The Lake District National Park. Definately the place to stay when visiting Carlisle, Cumbria.
