Nice, lovely location
Slept here for 4 nights. Rooms were a bit small but clean. Shared bathroom en toilet was no problem. They are checkt almost every hours and were always clean and fresh. Price is reasonabel voor NY city. Location is great, just a few minutes walk from union square metro station. Even Empire state buidling and Flatironbuilding is less 15 minutes walking... Nice restaurants in the area, you really must try Casa Mono (if you can get a table, go early!! between hotel union sq.)
Good for smokers...
I just spent 2 nights at Hotel 17. The place is ok and provides pretty good value for money. However, even though I made a reservation for a non-smoking room, I was put in a smoking room - rather unpleasant, to say the least. When I tried to change rooms I was told that there are only a few non-smoking ones, and they are given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Staff was friendly, so if you don't mind the smokey smell, Hotel 17 is not a bad pick.
Exactly as expected
Let me start by stating that reviewing anything online is out of character for me; however I do feel compelled to return the favor to those who had come before me in reviewing Hotel 17. Based solely on the reviews of people from your site I stayed at this hotel in mid Sept 04 for one night, and found that the appraisals of those who stayed there before me to be quite accurate. For the price, the hotel was accomodating and comfortable. The little staff that I did encounter, which was actually only a couple of gentleman at the front desk were... more
Excellent hotel!
This Hotel was great! My GF and I split up our stay in NY at 2 hotels. A few nights at Hojo @ Penn Station and a few nights at Hotel 17. Hotel 17 was better in all aspects! Staff was great. Price was right. We booked through hotel--- and the price fluctuated from day to day but we got it at its cheapest. The room we stayed in was 810. Great room. Shared bathroom was no problem at all. I think I had to wait once during our stay. The bathrooms were super clean. The neighbourhood was great! Couldn't have had a better... more
Reasonable, Polite, Friendly, Clean, Great Location!!
This was a great hotel...no doubt about it! Very reasonable, clean, and a comfortable place to stay in the city. Fancy enough for me. Good location 1 stop away from Grand Central! NYU neighborhood is always fun and interesting. Very nice staff, Cool rooms!
Great property, great location, great price...bad desk staff.
Hotel 17 is a great hotel- great accomodations, great location near Union Square, terrific price, and a lot of character. The only drawback to this hotel is the desk staff. With the exception of a guy named "Dave", who was terrific when we checked in, the front desk guys were completely ineffective, uncommunicative, and provided misleading information. Hopefully they only work on the weekends, because I actually witnessed one of them tell a customer that her complaint was bull*#@*! Would I stay here again?? Absolutely- Hotel 17 was... more
Horrible
I stayed at Hotel 17 a few years back, and I must say it was the worst experience I have ever had staying at a hotel. I thought I knew the city pretty well, growing up in NY, but I was wrong. We were on a floor with a shared bathroom, but the women's room was out of order. The floor smelled like pot, and the bedspread looked nasty. There was a stoned girl wandering the hall. I seriously felt as if I was going to get shot that night. I would strongly advise looking for another place to stay rather than stay at Hotel 17.
Hotel 17-ambiance, cleanliness, affordability
This is easily my favorite hotel in New York; it has character, ambiance, is a short walk to Union Square and is mercifully quiet at night. As a single woman, I keep safety at the forefront of my travel decisions and Hotel 17's attentive staff and safe policies really impressed me. The shared bathrooms were sparkling clean every day (in itself, an impressive feat) and while the rooms are obviously not luxury, they are clean and comfortable for the budget traveler. Likewise, staying in a brownstone hotel feels oh so New York...and you... more
New York's best kept secret
Great place to stay. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We will stay here again.
Good Value
I stayed here for a week, while looking for an apartment in New York. I was somewhat skeptical about sharing a bathroom with others, but it was fine. The hotel itself is very clean, the desk staff friendly (although they could be a little more knowlegeable about things to do in the area). Overall for what I paid $75/night where most other places I checked were $200 or more I thought it was a deal. Great location. The one thing....the hotel was a little noisier than I would have liked. I constantly heard door slamming and people talking.
