Wouldn't stay here again
This is the Thistle Hotel in Manor Place where I stayed for 2 nights on business. They wanted payment when I arrived which seemed a little unusual. My room was spacious and nicely decorated. Shame about the lamp with no bulb, the barely warm radiator, the shaving light that did not work and the tepid shower. I presume the hotel was not busy because meals were only available in the bar, not in the dining room. At breakfast I was made to feel like I was in the way, they were still laying the tables, although things brightened up when I... more
good hotel good location
we had a great stay at this hotel , we were there for a week while we explored around.. This is the Thistle that is at 59 Manor Place. Be very careful when you are reading reviews because when I was researching the hotel I found lots of times it was mixed up with the thistle on Leith St. which is a big square cement box. This hotel only has 10 rooms and it is in New Town nestled on a quiet street among rows and rows of Georgian townhomes, which is also what this hotel is. We loved the location , 5 or 10 minute walk to princes... more
Babs the Housekeeping Queen
After booking this hotel for three people got our confirmation for two people phoning to change three times before we thought they had got it. It had on confirmation executive room but when we arrived they had it only for two people in a junior suite. Eventually the housekeeper Babs got it organised and we got two adjoining rooms. Breakfast was not very organised. The apple juice was so watered down it tasted like water with a tinge of apple. The rolls were not set up and we had to ask for them. Would prefer to have coffee pots on the... more
not quite as described or expected
There are two hotels in Edinburgh with Thistle in their name - this one is a privately owned, family run establishment. On ringing the hotel to check it out, I was told it has 'contempory decor, is close to main bus routes, 5 minutes form the West End of Princes Street, a short walk into the City, in a quiet residential road, so quiet and homely.' Not quite right. The main road that links into Princes Street is at least 5 minutes walk away, the nearest bus stop at Shandwick Place another 5 minutes walk away and the short walk to the City... more
Great Hotel
Having stayed at the Thistle Edinburgh recently I would like to commend the management for a well run Hotel. From our slick check-in to our slick check-out 2 days later my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We had booked a 2 night mini-break which consisted of Dinner,Bed & Breakfast, and a suite complete with bottle of champagne. The accommodation was excellent, the meals were nice without being special and the staff were all very attentive. My only grouse would be with the bar service in the Boston Bean Company where there seemed to be... more
Wonderful Edinburgh, Scotland
With the English pound ensuring the American dollar is worth only half the amount, it was important to locate a hotel which is reasonably priced and located within a five minute (flat) walk to Princes Street and the Royal Mile which is an up hill climb. AAA located the Thistle Hotel in downtown Edinburgh on Leith Street which is considered New Town. The charge was $440 for three nights stay and included breakfast which can easily reach 20 pounds ($40) daily. The taxi ride cost approximately 15 pounds ($30) one way. I do tip if the... more
Great place!
A friend and I stayed there in May 2004. The location is great. Very close to railway station and hop-on hop-off buses and the tourist info center. Plus, right off Princess street and all the major attractions. The room was very comfortable and the staff was very friendly. You can book tours through the hotel. A great place to stay.
