We took mum away for a much needed weekend break and we knew what to expect as we did a rekky of this hotel when we were in the area 2 years before. We always wanted to go back as it is in a beautiful part of Devon. We were not disappointed although the hotel could be "tarted" up a bit inside the actual architecture of the hotel is lovely. It was revamped outside recently and has a lot of character. The food was ok, usual Shearrings fare, adequate and enough to eat but not the best meals but as it is such a bargain break we couldnt really complain. The entertainment in the evening was ok for the weekend, too much to sit through for a whole week, at one time we were the only couple on the "dance pallett" as the entertainer pointed out.. it was a bit precarious to dance on as it was full of holes and very old.
We had a fantastic bathroom, very new and wanted to take a sample of the flooring home as it was so pretty! we had plenty of space as we booked a room with a double and single bed, mum had a single room but as she visited us for a pre dinner drink there was extra room to move. A big surprise was the complimentary bottle of champagne and chocs and fruit in both rooms. we were so surprised we had to ask if they were "free" before we would touch them. A bargain break if ever there was one!
The area is lovely with some pretty shops. The lift to Lynmouth opened up the weekend we were there, in fact we had the first ever trip of the 2009! The Valley of Rocks is well worth a walk with fantastic views.
Travelling over the moors through the snowy hills was breathtaking.
All in all we had a lovely weekend and the Hotel was clean, plenty of food, staff very helpful and in a lovely location. No complaints at all.
