The Reef Resort was nice
We took a trip to Grand Cayman the last weekend in April. We really enjoyed the Reef Resort. It was nice, quiet and laid back. We had a 2 bedroom condo and what a delight to wake up to hearing the waves crash outside your balcony. We also enjoyed the security guard riding his bike w/ the parrot on the handle bars what a laugh. We came to Grand Cayman for the diving and that was phenominal. We really were not impressed with the island itself. It is not the typical laid back island attitude that we all expect for the carribean. The... more
Reef good, wind and water bad
The reef resort is a very nice, reasonable resort that attracted us because it seemed a quieter place to travel with kids. The hotel was very nice and the staff was good. The big problem we had was with the wind (15-25 MPH wind!) and the swimming (rocks and weeds). If you've ever been to Cayman 7-mile beach, you know the beach is amazing. However, ocean swimming at the Reef resort (which is on the other side of the island from 7-mile beach) is not possible with small kids due rocks, seaweed (in water, not beach), and lots of wind (wind... more

To the poster from Minnesota, I'm sorry to here that your vacation suffered from the unusual weather that we had during your stay. I repeat unusual, as for the first time ever we actually had to bring in a backhoe to remove copious amounts of seaweed that swept ashore in our largest swim area due to unusual spring tide currents combined with some late season winds. I would assure other visitors that it is exceptionally unusual for us to get such seaweed washed ashore, and that The Reef Resort is in fact very popular with families with small children, as we do have several areas which are ideal (with sandy bottom) for kids to swim in, not to mention a huge (1600 foot long) beach for them to explore to their hearts content ! I would encourage you to try us again... and I tell you what, if you email me your information and come again at the same time of year, if you have the same sort of weather I will refund you the cost of your stay, I am that sure that the "seaweed laden" experience you had was a freakish ocurrence ! :)

Fantastic units, fantastic vacation
We loved the units - clean, clean , clean, and well decorated. Fully applianced kitchen, and all units are beachfront - what a view! Snorkeling directly from the beach was just great! The Reef is small and well managed. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The food in the restaurant was good, a little pricey - but so are most restaurants in G. Cayman - however, a couple of less expensive restaurants are closeby. Should we return to Grand Cayman ( and why not?) we would return to this location in a heartbeat.
not interested in timeshare
We booked our vacation through travelocity. We did not sign up for or get any deals for looking at timeshares and had no interest in it, we were there on vacation. We had an appointment set up for us by mngt. when we got there for a meeting with quality control, which we later found out was a sales pitch for a timeshare. We didn't go to the meeting and made it clear we did not want to be bothered with that, we were on vacation. After that we felt uncomfortable there and the tone of the staff seemed different. When first arriving we joked... more

A TripAdvisor member today brought my attention to this review. My apologies to him and other viewers for not responding to this review before this, but back in Feb 2005 we were pretty busy making sure our resort was in the best possible shape after re-opening on Jan 29th, 2005 after the massive damage caused by Hurricane Ivan, Sep 11th, 2004. Anyway, as regards timeshare, yes we do offer membership opportunities for timeshares, quarter shares and full ownership in condos. However, we are the epitome of "soft sell", we absolutely do not pressure any guests into any such purchases. Re the review on Feb 13, 2005, all of our guests receive the same high level of service at all times, anything else is totally unacceptable to us and would results in disciplinary measures being taken against the offending staff member. Now, did the guest in question here the magic word 'timeshare" and set his mind against everything in the resort ? Quite possible :)

Perfect!
Trip Report 1-28-05 through 2-05-05 This was our ninth trip to Grand Cayman and our second stay at The Reef Resort. It was also our first visit since Hurricane Ivan. The island overall suffered quite a bit of damage but is well on it’s way to recovery. The Reef Resort was in fantastic shape. All of the staff worked seven day weeks getting everything back to better than ever. They all want their “Guests” to have a wonderful and memorable visit. There are plenty of activities such as snorkeling,... more
Heaven on Earth
Our Family is from the Midwest and we have been traveling to the Caribbean for many years. About 5 years ago we took a "Day Trip" from Cancun down to Grand Cayman to see the Reef Resort. That was all it took. We purchased a week Timeshare and have been going back every February since. We actually purchased a second week not long after and spend 50 weeks every year looking forward to our time at The Reef Resort. Located on the East side of the Island it is secluded from the hustle of the Hotel Zone yet not to far away to drive over if you so... more
