Hotel Saint Paul Le Marais Reviews

Feb 2009, Londoner

Lovely, small hotel. Very friendly service from reception and all staff. Room was nice and very comfortable. Only real niggle is that the film service did not work, on top of the fact that the only English-speaking channel on tv is CNN. BBC Prime was not subscribed to,... more

I love this hotel!! Has something changed?
I wonder if something has changed with my favorite Paris hotel? I visit this hotel once a year for the past several years and I just adore it. It's cute. Yes, the rooms are very cozy/small. But, it's full of charm. It's sweet, charming, extremely well located. It's in a great part of town (Marais), safe, pretty. All the times I've visited, I've stayed in rooms that overlooking the street and caribean restaurant. On all my stays the front desk staff very graciously spoke English (as my French is all but nil). There was a little internet business station in the lobby. The breakfast down in the basement was decent (though I prefer to go to the surrounding neighborhood cafes). Hmmm...I'm baffled as to how the ratings aren't as high as in previous years and wonder if there's been a change of management? If not, I suspect the main gripe has to do with the cozy room size (which, honestly, is not a problem after a long day of sight seeing). I truly love this hotel and recommend it.
charm abounds in Paris
We went off season and found the hotel to be wonderful. The room had wood-beam ceilings, our own bath and a window overlooking the street. The room was small by American standards yet we at no time felt crowded. The hotel was clean as were the rooms. The staff was most helpful and we would definitely stay there again.
A great disappointment
I planned a short trip to Paris as a 40th birthday treat with my wife and two young daughters. I had confirmed our booking of their apartment back in March. We arrived, expectantly, at the end of May to find that they had given the appartment away. There were no family rooms or interconnecting rooms available on the Saturday night and their attitude appeared to be: "There is nothing we can do". Having "discussed" the situation with the receptionist, we were found a very endearing appartment just off the main square that was only available for one night. We agreed to come back to Hotel Saint Paul for Sunday night, having booked a superior double with interconnecting single room (at a very competitive rate). However, once again confusion reigned as we arrived with our cases only to be told that we had two separate doubles. Yes, you guessed it, we "discussed" the situation for some 10 minutes before being given the promised superior double, etc. As we arrived in the room, we could only open the connecting door by using a cork screw blade (as the door handle was hanging off with no spindle in sight). As we checked out on Monday, and in spite of the sequence of errors, I was told about three times that I had got a very good rate for the rooms. Our view was that we should not have to pay for such poor service in the first place. My advice is: "Have no expectations. You cannot then be disappointed."
Most of these reviews miss the point
I've stayed twice in the hotel st paul le marais, and would definitely go back there again. It's located right in the heart of the marais, close to a metro, and barely blocks away from the place des vosges, musee carnavalet, musee picasso, place de la bastille, and numerous other charming parisian sites. While it is on the small side, the rooms are distinctly french and have more character than any bland chain hotel you're going to find. If you want to stay at a Best Western, avoid this hotel, if you're looking for a distinctly non-tourist experience in the most "French" part of Paris, give it a try.
Trust Trip Advisor!
I have been using Trip Advisor and am always wondering if the reviews are really accurate. How better to test this out than type in a hotel that I was dissapointed with - Hotel St Paul Le Marais. I visited this hotel a few years ago on a recommendation from the NY Times. There were many other hotels in this price range, but I went with this one. For the money that I paid, it was not nice. My room was not really clean, just all run down and dusty. There were things that were broken or damaged that could have been easily fixed, but were not. I even glued a piece of wallpaper back on the wall for them! Also, had some disruptive neighbors that kept us awake. It was nothing to brag about. In any case, went back to Paris and stayed at the charming Caron de Beaumarchais which I would highly recommend.
Great little hotel in a fabulous area
We have read some of the other reviews which slag this charming little hotel and wonder what is wrong with these people. We have been to Paris several times and this is a quintessential small Parisian hotel. If you want to stay in a chain hotel which feels/is the same no matter which country you are in, go ahead. How boring. This is quaint, yes the elavator is small...so? The rooms are tiny....so? They have ambience and a slightly faded charm which we and many inveterate travellers we know, enjoy for what it is. Can't help wondering why your jaundiced reviewers don't just stay home. I suppose they don't like the food in Paris either. Too French for them I expect.
What a mistake!
Our double room was so small we could not walk by one another at the foot of the bed. The shower rod pulled out of the wall on the first day and it took two days to get it fixed. The hallways were depressing with exposed wires and an awful paint job. So little storage space in the room that we did not unpack and lived out of the suitcases. The day hostess at the front desk was rude and disinterested (though her evening counterpart was quite helpful). Sole redeeming quality was a fairly good breakfast in the mornings.
Tiny room - bathroom in room! - Terrible service
We were given a single room and expected not to notice. When we pointed out the fact they said we could move tomorrow at 1pm (didn't want to). Evertually offered a miserable 10% discount for our trouble. Manager was quite rude about this. Room was tiny - TV hanging off shelf. Bathroom in room with glass wall to seperate. Barely enough room to move around the very small bed. Look elsewhere - this place does not deserve a 3 star rating.
A Three Star Mystery
How this hotel got a three star rating is a mystery to me. The rooms are small, run down and depressing. The hallways have exposed wires. Rooms at 150 euros are a total rip off, even in Paris. Much better and cheaper hotels a few footsteps away.
TINY rooms even smaller elevator
There are many other hotels withing a block with offer the same tiny rooms and "no service" for $25 per night less. The room was so small for $90 that the television was hung on the wall, and one still had to bend over so as not to his one's head, as there was NO room to spare in the 9ft x 9 ft square room. Bath was also minute and not clean.
