We booked The Royal York Hotel Brighton for our 2008 staff Christmas Party with disastrous results.
Waiting up to 50 minutes for breakfast, when it did arrive it was very poor in quality and the wrong order. Staff were kids, untrained and unable to cope with more than a handful of guests – dropping food as they went and not clearing away dirty plates.
Rooms were either too hot or freezing cold with no clear way to adjust the temperature, several of the rooms either had no hot water at all (all weekend) or only lukewarm, when reception was informed they said this was ‘probably because everyone was showering at the same time’(!) – The rooms were ALL very noisy, either from the street below, noisy occupants in the adjacent rooms or from the Karaoke rooms which have no sound proofing.
Reception and Housekeeping staff were unbelievably unhelpful, often surly, rude, abrupt and unapproachable. No senior managers were present. Room Service took ages to answer the phone and when they did it was “yes what do you want?”, five trays were delivered with dirty milk jug and cups, dirty trays from the rooms previous occupants were left in corridors and stair wells and were not collected all weekend! Guests were incorrectly charged for the previous occupants room service – one guest nearly got stuck paying for someone else’s champagne and others were charged for their stay yet the entire event had been paid for in advance
The leak coming through one of the light fittings in the private room we had hired for the meal resulted in all the lights having to be switched off and a bucket placed on the table to catch the water.
Not impressed!!!
