The Hotel Patara Viewpoint

We have just returned from out first experience of Turkey and also Patara View - Point. We went out to a wedding of a very close family friend which was the first time the hotel had been involved in organising anything like this) and the whole experience (apart from the mosquitoes!) was fantastic. I have just returned with my wife and two children (boys 4 & 8) from a week's stay at the Viewpoint. Just to set the scene: I have had an exhausting year and I was looking for a week of complete relaxation. The Viewpoint was recommended to me by an acquaintance and sounded like the sort of place that would suit our needs i.e. quiet with something to keep the children amused. My partner and I were lucky enough to spend 2 amazing weeks at the Viewpoint this July, and we are still pining to go back! The holiday was better than we could have dreamed, and this was in a large part due to the wonderful hospitality of Muzaffer and Anne-Louise, as well as the other staff. From day 1 they made us feel 100% welcome, and as if nothing was too much trouble. We spent most of our days either lounging by the wonderful pool, or at the stunning Patara beach. I visited this hotel for 4 days from August 1st. I took 3 of my sons aged 5, 14 and 16. Unfortunately it was not at all suitable for the teenagers... Muzaffer appeared hostile and unfriendly. We arrived at lunchtime and decided to go to the beach. The tractor transfer only runs once a day at 10.30 in the morning by the way. When we arrived back we were met in the driveway by him to be told that under no circumstances were we allowed around the pool area or into our rooms unless we showered first (outside). I could recommend this hotel to couples & singles but feel probably best avoided by families with young children. I visited the Viewpoint with my 7 yr old daughter, ten years ago now, in 1996. Admittedly it is a lovely, clean, comfortable small hotel but unfortunately the owner, Muzzafer, is not child-friendly & if I was not fairly thick-skinned myself he might have made my two-week stay rather difficult. The Patara Viewpoint is set on a hillside overlooking the small village of Gelemis on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. I came back from there last night after a lovely stay out there with my girlfriend, and we've sworn to return as soon as possible. The Patara Viewpoint Hotel, mmmm. What can I say? Some good points, some bad. We travelled independently to Patara last year, 2005. The main clientelle of the Viewpoint is British and it is mostly suited to those with families. It's 5 mins walk downhill to the village. Uphill is definitely more. I will arrive at the Viewpoint in 10 days for my 4th stay - and know it will be as relaxed and enjoyable as the previous 3. Within minutes of stepping through the doors at Dalaman Airport I'll be on my way by private transfer, (car or minibus - depending on who else has arrived or has been dropped off at Departures). No hanging around waiting for a coach load of other travellers. A cool bottle of water is provided prior to the air-con kicking in.
