" Skiiiii!  "

This hotel was really nice to stay in. It was better than we were expecting. Our rooms were airy and light and the bathrooms were amazing considering its 3 star. A maid cleans every day whilst we were out skiing and if you're anything like us, untidy (!) it was nice to come home to a clean and tidy room.
The food.. was very very good. A pre starter, starter, main and dessert for dinner and a buffet breakfast. A wide range to choose from and we were satisfied every night. The staff/waitresses are very friendly and would do just about anything to help.
There are a few good pubs/bars around the small town which is nice to go to in the evenings.
Overall a really nice stay in sauze.

Advice: Loved it.

Activities: queens was our local :)

" Group of 34 age 6 to 65 "

A holiday that went smoothly and enhanced by the excellent accommodation.
The room service was a standard you would hope for but don't often get. The standard was what I would imagine 5 star to be.
Food was plentiful after a hard day on the piste. There was not a day when I felt let down by the quality of the quisine with a choice of 3 dishes every night. These were preceded with a buffet of salad, vegetables, cold, meats, fresh bread. A varied choice with too much to list. The room was not huge but totally adequate with an on suite shower and toilet with separate wash basin area and always warm. We always take a pillow and this was the only thing we needed as the beds are firm and the pillows supplied are also very firm. I would not hesitate in returning. A Short walk to the lifts, some of it up a slope but you can take the bus from the square and avoid it. AAAA

Advice: A pleasent traditional town with usual shops, A number of ski lifts need updating

Activities: We are ski nuts, sightseeing is not on our list, apart from the mountains.

" Brilliant Holiday "

Very traditional, friendly hotel. Rooms were very clean. Bar is very spacious and good to relax in on an evening, not too pricey and a good choice of cocktails.
The food in the hotel was very good on an evening with a good choice and lots to eat. Breakfast was the only bad thing about the whole stay... the choice of bread rolls with cheese or cereal doesnt really get you going for a day on the slopes.
Only 5 minute walk from clotes lift and 2 minutes from bus stop to get to sportinia lift.
Would definately stay their again.

Advice: Brilliant slopes, good connections to sestriere and sansicaro, and lots to do!

Activities: Torch light descent (skiing down to clotes with torchlight)

" top ski "

As a group just returned from staying at this hotel i feel that i needed to give our opinions about it.
The flight to Turin from Gatwick was just over the hour and the transfer was about hour and half which was brilliant. You get dropped off at the tourist information centre and leaving your luggage behind as it is then brought up to the hotel for you by a small van.
We arrived at our hotel and was met in the bar by the most helpful Paolo and barmaid Carmen.
the hotel was spotless clean as was the room and for 3 males sharing the room we had was big and clean with a massive bathroom with loads of towels .
The hotels food was excellent and there was plenty of it at breakfast and for the evening meal.
The hotels staff were very friendly and polite and would help you as much as possible.
The Hotel is excellently placed with the town centre just a very short walk down the road as is the ski bus stop.
The only gripe was that the ski boot room is an un heated shed that makes putting on your boots a nightmare in the morning.(But be crafty and sneak them up to your room so long as you dont wear them in the hotel)
overall the holiday was excellent with the best snow they have had in the resort since 1978 and the bars were good in the town.
We also were lucky enough to get to go to the San Siro in Milan to see Inter v Roma which was a bonus!!!
Would definately return to sauze as the variety of ski runs,it was not busy and the transfer is so short.

Advice: take extra euros as the drinks are not cheap

Activities: Go and see Liam and Kim in The Cotton Club

" Brilliant Holiday!!! "

Just returned from a fantastic weeks skiing in Sauze D'Oulx. Booked with Thomson and stayed at the Gran Baita.
The flight was great only 1hour 50mins. The arrival at Turin was a bit chaotic- very busy and had to wait over an hour for our luggage. The italians are very laid back- they probably had a break for lunch!
The bus journey to sauze was a bit of a fright! The bus driver swerved around nearly every corner- taking in mind the snow fall before we arrived, i was just a bit freaked out! he also thought it necessary to beep his horn at ever car that was in front!?
We had to walk with the rep from a car park roughly 500 yards from the hotel. They take your luggage on a van but you have to load and unload the bloody stuff several times which is a pain when you have skis and boot bags along with a case!
The hotel is a bit dated but very cosy. The manager is pleasant- very chilled. he was once a pro skier for Italy and you can check out his olympic shirts and pictures on the walls.
We were knackered and headed straight to the bar for a drink. 1.5 pints of larger costs 7.50Euros!!!! We didn't order another one!
the room was very comfortable and spacious. Lovely bathroom with a terrace that had a lovely view of Sauze. The place is very picture postcard and unspoilt. Fresh towels in the bathroom, and shower gel provided.
The tv in the room has MTV and a couple of Engliah channels and World News.
The only grip is you are not allowed to leave your skis and boots in the hotel. They are left outside in a shed which is left open all day! I was amazed no one had anything nicked!!! You try getting ski boots on when they are cold- almost impossible.
The food was amazing and the portion sizes are huge. I put on weight even though I skied everyday! You really could not moan about the food. No hot breakfast or toast but lots of fresh fruits and plenty of choice. Delicious! You even get a choice everyday from a menu.
The skiing in sauze was fantastic. They have had the best snow falls in 30 years so there has never been a better time to go. The pistes were empty the first 5 days and we really made the most of it.
The italians are very freindly and have excellent manners- unlike the Germans i encountered in Soll and Mayrhofen!!
I had a carving lesson between two which cost 45Euros- it was very good and gave us some technical tips we can improve on.
The best skiing was to be found in santecario (probably spelt wrong) there was fantasic long red runs and the ladies olympic black.
the milky way is better suited for intermediates, not many blue or black runs, however I spoke to a guy that had never skied before and he was on reds and a blacks by the end of the week- shows how good the ski school must be.
We did the torchlight decent. It was a great experience and worth the money. I paid 40E- i know you can get cheaper. We booked with a group from another hotel. You get a meal and wine included as well as the chance to bum board and play football on the piste- it was all a good laugh!
A couple we met bought saloman ski boots for 108Euros a pair- so get some bargains if you need some boots.
One more moan- The pound is pants against the Euro at the moment and we felt it. Pints were 5-6Euros each outside of happy hour. Ouch!!!
All in all the best skiing holiday ever- we can't wait to go back next year and I would have no objections staying at the Grand Baita again. The position wasn't troo bad. 5-10 min walk to the Clotes lift each day- a bit like cardiac hill- a killer but hey ho, you can't have everything.
The clotes lift is the best to catch if you don't intend to go to ski school. You can access the whole of the milky way from here. You can get to sestriere without catching the one man chair, so don't worry. The whole place is a paradise for intermediates and the runs are wide, varied and long- enjoy!!!

Advice: FAB!!!

Activities: Great for intermediate ski-ing

" A nice hotel, 2 min walk to bars and... "

A nice hotel, 2 min walk to bars and shops, 3min to one
of the main lifts!

Excellent position, just away from the town, so no real
night time noise!

The hotel was spotless, with a great lounge for chilling
by the fire after a great day on the slopes and enjoying
a bottle of wine after evening meal. The staff in this
family run hotel are very friendly and efficient, meals
are varied, though a better selection of puds wouldn't
go amiss! Rooms had everything req'd, including a
balcony for the odd cigarette! The only thing that really
disappointed was the ski locker. Housed in a large shed
outside, it didn't really give enough heat to dry boots
sufficiently.

The thomson reps were rushed off there feet, as 2 had
left the week we arrived, but were excellent dealing
with my problems with prepaid snowboarding lessons!
They run a number of trips, the pick being the chance
to see juventus play and also the olympic bobsleigh run.
This is a must for all adrenaline seekers!

The resort has a great and varied ski area. They did a
great job keeping runs open with very little snow, whilst
we were there! Lift system is dated in places, but
adequiet. Great tree lined runs, with plenty of spots to
nip into the trees and seek some off-piste action!
The best runs in sauze are to be found to the left of
the resort! Not the best for boarders, but with a ski
area that stetches over 6 resorts, something could be
found for everyone!

Loved Italy in general, though i thought overall the
food, resort facilities and prices were better in austria.
So next year it will be christmas in austria and feb in
canazei, italy, i can't wait!!!!!!

" Upon Arival to the resort you get... "

Upon Arival to the resort you get dropped off at the tourist info bus park which is about 800m away from the hotel. You leave all bags their in a large heap and the rep takes you to the accomodation. All bags and skis + snowboards are then trnasfered to the hotel about half an hour later and left in a heap putside for you to collect. The hotel is very clean and all staff are friendly, The only down sides are that all snowboards, boots and skis are left outside in a damp shed as you are not allowed to bring them into the hotel, Their is a heater inside the shed but this was never turned on. If you are 6ft 2 live myself you will find it hard in the 5ft 6 beds but I managed. The food was really nice and you had the choice of 3 meals from the starter - main - desert which you marked off the list the night before. You have a self service salad bar as well so you will never feel hungry. The food times were a little short as breakfast was 7.30 till 9am and dinner was 7.30 till 8.30pm.

Every bar in the resort chraged the same price which was €4.50 a pint and happy hour was 3pm till 6pm. The slopes were great but watch out for saturday and sunday as all locals arrive and the ques are massive... I would reccoment a 5 day pass..

" Friendly staff, spotlessly clean,... "

Friendly staff, spotlessly clean, excellent Italian style food, spacious lounge/bar area to relax after a hard day on the slopes.

It is in a quiet location whilst still being close to the centre of the village, and around a 300m uphill walk to the Clotes chair lift. Not the most modern or luxurious 3* hotel you will ever stay in, but excellent value for money and a real winner in creating a warm welcoming atmosphere.

" Fantastic hotel highly recommended!... "

Fantastic hotel highly recommended! This was my 2nd stay at Gran Baita and (3rd time in Sauze) again it was a great overall stay. This hotel is family run and has a great team looking after the guests.

Having worked in the hotel industry for 12 years I know when I have stayed in a well run hotel. The bedrooms are clean and comfortable and the bathrooms are spotless, I even found the chambermaid cleaning the shower cubicle with a toothbrush (brilliant).
Another fact about this hotel that shows me how well run it is, is that all the staff were exactly the same as on my previous stay (Jan 2006).

You are served delicious hearty 3 course meals and mid week you are treated to a candle lit meal (gala style), the Head Chef plates up the dessert, and on both of my stays has been greeted by rapturous applause.

This hotel has a warm and friendly atmosphere, the lounge is great to arrive at after a long days skiing with the open fire, comfy sofas, friendly smiles and to top it off you can buy a lovely hot chocolate to defrost you.

The hotel is in a quiet location yet still close to the main square and a stones throw away from the bus stop that takes you to the Sportina chair lift.

I think this hotel is marvellous and you definitely get your money's worth. I am already planning my next holiday in Sauze with my kids and will definitely be staying in Gran Baita again as it is very family friendly.

What more can I say it’s brilliant!

" We really enjoyed our stay at this... "

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

We selected the Gran Baita over every other (including the Relais) on the basis of the information about the hotel and the reviews which indicated that this was a small, friendly and well-located place.

We were not disappointed. The hotel is perfectly located - it is close to all the pubs, clubs, shops, ski-hire shops, spitting distance from a ski-bus stop and a short walking distance to ski lift (around 5 minutes walk up a slight hill).

The hotel staff are warm and accommodating - the food took us by surprise - a great choice each evening and ho, YUM!

Our room, which accommodated three of us, was clean and comfortable with a balcony offering views of spectacular sunsets over the mountains.

Sauna facilities were absolutely fine - just what was needed after the first two days of skiing...

This hotel has a much more intimate feel than the others we popped into - and it has a cosy bar with an open fire-place (so if you'd rather stay in and play cards one evening, than head out for the various bars and clubs - this is the place).

The resort as a whole, in our view, was superb. Advanced skiers might want to search elsewhere for something more testing, but the runs around Sportinia are great for beginners and intermediates with a superb range of open/tree-lined runs.

In Sportinia one can sit for hours in a comfortable deck chair enjoying a few drinks and watching people of varying ability ski/snowboard in from a few runs.

From Sportinia it is easy to get across to Sestriere - some suggest that Sestriere can only be accessed via a one-man chair lift - not true - consult your Piste map.

In terms of the nightlife in Sauze - it was less lively than we had expected (but we did arrive for the final week of the skiing season) - but we still had a great time!

" This hotel is a must you will not... "

This hotel is a must you will not find better value for money the food is superb, staff are great and accommodation of a very high standard. So full marks for the hotel.

However, if you are a keen skier and wish to access the Milky Way choose another resort.

There is only one way over the top this being via a one man chair lift which is very old and slow.

Even this would not be so bad if the whole lift system did not stop running if it gets little windy, e.g. if a bird farts.

The Piste map boasts 450km of skiing and many lifts and drags, in reality a lot of lifts and drags are either not running or do not exist.

The area lift pass is a farce. If you do manage to get over the other side you can only ski parts of the system for one day.

Skied here in 1990 and could not get over the top then, and only came back because I mistakenly thought there had been improvements prior to the Olympics.

Alright that’s the rant over .

Sauze is not as bad place to go the people are nice and beer is not to dear on the whole I had a good time but I wont go back because of the lift system 25.2.07 - 4.3.07.

Perfect location, spacious room, very clean bathroom and friendly staff... all topped off with amazing food!

We fully expected to be eating out in restaurants a couple of nights, but in fact we ate in the hotel every night saving loads of money!

The chef actually got a standing ovation when he came into the restaurant one night.

Second time to the great resort of Sauze and I fully intend to go back and stay in this hotel next year!

" Upon arrival we were greeted by a... "

Upon arrival we were greeted by a very friendly owner and made to feel welcome! The hotel has a very homely feel due to the large fire and settees in the lounge where you can crash and defrost after a long day! The staff are really friendly and helpful, and the rooms are comfortable. It is close to the ski bus stop that takes you to the lift for Sportina and is a close walk to the Clotes lift.

Short walk to all the pubs and clubs bonus is the short stagger back.
They give you a 3 course meal every night which leaves you stuffed but is really good, hearty food.

If you are a beginner this is a good place to go, excellent ski school in Sportina, instructors really friendly.

Loved it, will definitely go back!!!!
