Got what we paid for !
from sluggy1uk
We stayed between 21st July and 3 August 2008. Our group consisted of my wife, 3 & 5 year old boys and myself. Location: Very tired, rundown and in need of some TLC. Accomodation: We had a family villa which was very spacious and of a good Turkish standard. There were a few problems like the shower leaked causing the floor ro become slippry, you had to be in excess of 6' tall if you want your feet to touch the floor when sat on the toilet and excess of 6'5 if you want to reach the towel rail, but this was not really a problem. The sprinklers outside tended to come on just when you were leaving the villa at meal times, but again this was not too much of a problem. The hotel wifi did work in our room, the airconditioning was excellent, the safe was a good size and the flat screen tv and satellite worked. Catering: Excellent choice of sald and bread. The main meals were always cold and were recycled which in my opinion is what caused my family to suffer severe sickness and diarrohea. My 3 year old even had to be hospitalised as a result of his sickness. There is very little choice if you are vegetarian. The selection of beverages was poor. There was no sugar free drinks and only one bar occasionaly had diet cola. The only spirits were vodka, gin or raki. There was beer at each bar and red wine at some of the bars. If you purchased a different drink the prices were extorsionate. 13 ytl for a malibu and 4 ytl for a small glass of fresh orange. Pool: There are two pools. One childs pool at about 12" deep and the main pool which was 1.5 m deep all round. The pools were good but extremely slippery around the edges. There are three water slides. Red, yellow and blue. The red slide was good fun, the blue slide was rough on the inside and the yelow slide was out of order. Sun beds, umbrellas and little tables were plentiful although you did have to save then by about 0830 if you wanted one by the childs pool. Spa.The spar was good but very expensive in relation to Turkish prices. I did have a Turkish bath and oil massage which excellent. I paid £32. In Altinkum the same treatment was £15. Staff: The animation team were hard working but it was what I would expect at Butlins not a 5 star resort. the barstaff, guest relations and management were unhelpful and rude in my opinion. Beach: Ok but no watersports as advertised. Disco: Opened on our last night but they charge you £10 entry ! Cleaniness: Very clean and tidy. Conclusion: Overall I would rate the hotel as 3star if I compared it to other Turkish hotels that I have stayed in. If there was a change of management and catering staff the hotel would improve massively. I did not like the area much so would probably not visit again. I think that the £2100 we paid was a fair price and would not have wanted to pay too much more as it would not be worth it.
The best holiday

Firstly I would like to say how stunned I am at some of the negative feedback i have read about this resort. I am extremely well travelled and I can honestly say there are not many places I would return to (because there are so many in the world to see) but I would return here with no hesitation. I travelled with a friend and our 2 daughters and we booked a family room in the chalets rather than the hotel. The hotel was finished but opposite the conference centre which wasn't, but having said that we didn't see or hear any building or construction work going on at all. the hotel is a little off the beaten track and the furthest point away from all the facilities so would recommend the chalets/bungalows/whatever they are called! We arrived and checked in, no problems there, very quick and efficient, then we were taken to our chalet by a little golf buggy type of thing. The room was beautiful, clean, new, fully tiled, air conditioned, roomy and had sky TV and a flat screen TV. Lots of storage space, safe, balcony and lockable patio doors. the whole resort is new, roomy, clean and well signposted. We always saw gardeners/maids/staff wandering around working and doing things. The resort is walled all around and has security patrolling 24/7 and on the private beach too. the pictures we saw on the website do not do this resort justice. The pool area is massive and the 3 waterslides were much bigger than they appear. Again, it is all very clean and well maintained, but the downside is that whatever time you come down in the morning there are towels draped over all the beds (which drives me mad) Having said that, the resort wasn't full to capacity probably because it is new and only been open a month. The staff are all great, very friendly and have water games going on every day which take place in a small area of the pool. There is music playing all day, it starts at 10am and is a funky mixture of Turkish and English, not too loud and gets you singing away to yourself. The food is fabulous, a massive spread of all sorts, a mixture of Turkish and English, hot and cold, and a real variety every day. About 5 different soft drinks as well as water were freely available to help yourself from all bars and the restaurant areas. On our first night after showering we had a leak from the shower and it flooded the floor. We called reception about it and they were there within 5 minutes to fix it and it was fine after that. As it's all new there they are not that clued up on how to market various things. They have photographers there that take pictures of you, they take loads and they are fabulous pictures but they only take cash not cards (£4 per picture) there are great trips to go on, but you need to ask them they are not promoted and we had a couple of great boat trips that we booked through Michelle who works there in the spa (English girl) and her friend Leon. Going into the town, it is a bit like Benidorm with lots of English bars, restaurants etc, the palm wings resort is a world apart from there. Whilst there I got conjunctivitis, so went to see the onsite doctor ( not included in the AI package) The nurse called him and he was there within 10 mins to examine my eye. The examination was £30, I went to get the money and by the time i got back to him the pharmacist was already there with my drops and cream ( charged about £5 for that) Very efficient. In short, we had a fantastic holiday there, nothing was too much trouble, we felt very welcome and I would recommend it highly. In fact, some family members will be booking later this year based on our feedback!! Please do email me if you have any questions, I thoroughly recommend this resort and will certainly go back again.

We placed a booking with Travel Republic on the 8th of July, for a one week stay from the 20th until the 27th at the Palm Wing Beach Resort Altinkum Turkey. We booked a sea view double room; there were three room types standard, family and sea view. On arrival we were shown to our room only to find it did not have a sea view nor did it have a balcony and was 10 minutes walk to the beach. We refused to unpack our cases and went straight to reception. They told us Travel Republic had booked us the wrong room as there are only six villas with sea views which are for families. We then started to argue our case for some two hours; we eventually rang Travel Republics agents in Turkey who were no help whatsoever. We then asked for a full refund, which we were refused. The resort did have a hotel on site which we presumed should have been where we were to stay, but however was not open until Monday the 21st of July. This hotel on the complex had 3-story balconies with the top balconies having sea views. The hotel reception staff were rude and very unhelpful, initially told us the hotel was full. After further arguing we were given another room with a terrace but the furthest away in the complex some 15-minute walk to the beach. The following day we spoke to the Palm Wings manager and found him to be no help at all. We feel we were sold this holiday under false pretences having known there were only 6 villas with sea views being family rooms, we would not have booked. The hotel was not complete, building work is still ongoing and we have added some pictures of the main outside dance area and pier which was incomplete on our return. The hotel also stated water sports, which don't exist. We were not the only ones complaining, some families having booked family rooms were given two separate rooms where mother and father were split up with their children. The standard rooms do not have a terrace; these rooms are really for families where there is an internal door that adjoins the rooms together. These rooms are very good if you are a family but not if you are a couple as these rooms are very small with no balcony. The complex its self is very nice, but only just a 4* in our opinion. If you have stayed in an all inclusive 5* hotel in Mexico do not expect the same standard at Palm Wings. The food is slightly above average with a good selection of salads and sweets. All the main meals were just warm and not hot. The breakfast was very basic, the only English breakfast was a fried egg or an omelette which you had to queue up for outside the restaurant. The best time to go to the restaurant in the morning is around 08:00 -0.8:30, as the queues are small, they did manage to speed up the queues for the fried eggs and omelettes by using two frying pans instead of one Many parents complained there was not much food choice for children. The snack bar which serves pizza and chicken wings along with chips and processed burgers is dreadful. The choice is the same everyday and is always stone cold. The towels for the sun beds are given out from 09:00am but in my opinion take your own towels and reserve your sun bed, although there are plenty around the pool they go quickly. One word of warning, the tiles around the pool area become extremely slippery when wet and many people whilst we were there suffered injuries from stitches in their heads to ending up on crutches. Everyone is entitled to one free meal in the a la carte which you book in the lobby at guess relations. In our opinion this was the worst night we had. There is no atmosphere, and drinks have to be paid for if ordered i:e bottles of wine. The waiters only serve water so if you do go take in your drinks from the restaurant. The food is no different than the main restaurant; the only difference is it is served to you very slowly with no choices. Water sport is advertised, but they don’t exist. The hotel did bring in a paddle boat one day, but only the Turkish families were allowed to use it as the British were told they would not be insured. This caused some stand offs with the British people and the boat was taken away. Be very careful when having a shower as they all leak a flood the floor. The towel rail is 6-foot above the toilet; make sure you get your towels prior to having a shower. The reason being, some people would have a shower then climb onto the toilet to reach their towels only to slip and cause injury to themselves. The entertainment team did a very good job during the day and worked very hard to please, the same team then work the amphitheatre at nights but it’s that bad you have to laugh. The hotel could be greatly improved if a new management structure was put in place, the current attitude from the management will lose them return business as is the case with us. 4* at best.

Have just had two weeks at PALM WINGS BEACH RESORT and it was lovely, not 5 star in UK terms, but then we didn't pay 5 star prices. As said before every day something new is finished. The day we left the disco was opening. FOOD: is good but not very hot. Plenty of it and each evening the bbq had either fish or meat on it. Lovely salads and plenty of fresh fruit. TOP TIP: if you see a pudding you like the look of when you first enter the dinning room, take it and put in on your table, because it wont be there for long! The snack bar is open from 12-5 and serves chips, pizza, burger and a cooked meat (different each day). The snack bar is below the restaurant, but during the day you can take food to either and sit and eat it. A AL CARTE: NO ONE TELLS YOU, BUT YOU CAN HAVE ONE GO FOR FREE. What I was never prepared for was to see the obscene amount of food that is taken and wasted, mostly by the Turkish families. TOWELS: You are given a towel card on arrival, present this to the boy at the pool and you get a towel for the day, hand it back in the evening and you get your card back. You repeat this daily. You also get clean towels daily in your room. SUN BEDS: I've never seen so many in one place, with a sun shade for every two beds, they were constantly bringing out new beds and sorting out shades. The beach is the same, loads of beds and sun shades and all for free. The beach at Altinkum charge for hiring. BEACH: Gritty and the sand in the sea is a bit sludgy, not a nice feeling between you toes!, we didn't spend much time at the beach. ROOM CLEANING: Done daily, with clean towels daily. See what pattern you get your bed made into! the maids are very inventive. One day the maids forgot to put in clean towels, so I had to go and ask, by the time I got back to the room, they had been delivered and my husband was dried and dressed! ROOMS: The electricity only works when your key fob is in the slot. However, if you remove the disc from the door lock you can use your key to enter the room and then leave the fob in the slot so that the air con and fridge are on all day,. DRINKS: Plenty of cold drinks, beer, wine, coke etc. The only spirits that you can get for free are Gin, vodka and Riki (perno) and they are very strict about you having to pay after midnight! ENTERTAINMENT: There isn't really that much for kids to do, the water things at the beach hadn't arrived yet so nothing going on there. The entertainment team try really hard to rally people into doing things with results, but my children of 13 and 15 found that they were going a bit stir crazy with not much happening for there are, games of pool, internet etc all were an extra cost. You can get WiFi connection in the shopping centre bar and around the pool sop my son was OK with his PSP. Would I go back, yes possibly in a few years time once it is finished. I certainly wouldn't pay Thompson prices to stay there. If you are thinking of booking with Thompson then look for a better deal with another company going to the same place. Enjoy your stay - we did.
Mixed - but overall I enjoyed my stay
from Arctophile28
I booked this trip at the last minute via On The Beach. The holiday represented excellent value for money but I think that to call itself a 5 star is stretching the truth. Think of it as a 4 star. The transfer was smooth going there but coming back, in soaring heat, the driver refused to turn on the air-con and even switched off the coach at stop lights - presumably to save fuel. It almost spoilt the whole trip. (Not the hotel's fault) Reception, checking in and the rep were all very good and all spoke excellent English (better than some guests :-) ). Any problems were speedily addressed except for two things which seemed to impact almost everybody - (1) the in-room fridges are useless. They will keep drinks moderately cool but not cold and certainly don't make ice despite containing ice-cube trays. Some people suspected they went off when you left the room (you have to take your key card with you and everything else switches off then - including air-con). (2) the showers trays are not sealed meaning you may as well shower with the doors open as they leak everywhere. There are floor drain as though its meant to be a wet room but the slope of the floor is not towards them. The result is that the floor is left in pools of water every time you shower. It's not really a problem to the guests though it's surely more inconvenient and costly to them . The rooms are large and I found the bed comfortable though several other guests found them too hard. You will need to ask for a sheet to go over you as they only supply one to lie on and a coverlet (which is scratchy). The furnishings are adequate but not 5-star quality. The drawers in the wardrobe are slightly too wide for the door opening making it very hard to open them. TV has lots of channels. Air-con is remote controlled and works well. 2 cups of water a day provided to your fridge but you can always top up bottles for free if you want more. Housekeeping was very variable dependant on where you were situated. Some were excellent - mine was just adequate, occasionally leaving cups around and not always sweeping the floor. All appeared to be very honest as I heard nothing negative said. Food, by and large was of very good quality, particularly given the numbers catered for. I always found something to eat and I require gluten free food. In my book this rates a hotel highly. Don't bother with the 'a la carte' special evening though. You are allowed one for free each stay. It was the worst evening of the whole stay. Service was appallingly slow and the food not any better than in the main restaurant. Wine over-priced (would have been free in the other restaurant), very limited choice, and not very nice. Alcohol was very freely available provided you like beer, vodka or gin - other things were available but had to be paid for. Soft drinks (and breakfast "juice") were all squashes. Fresh fruit juice appeared halfway through the week at an extra cost. The water was always plentiful and pleasant if not always cold. Bar staff - mixed. Some very very pleasant and helpful, others not as sociable but most appeared to be suffering from exhaustion. This isn't surprising as they have to work very long hours in tremendous heat and for a pittance of money. I saw staff changes in just the one week. Little logic applied as the management have some staff serving drinks, from the shade, all day and others out in the sun collecting glasses all day with no rotation at all. Entertainment - was improving as time went on but much of it was more to do with "one man and his ego" than really entertaining. From brief glimpses and word of mouth, some was decidedly inappropriate (grown men in nappies making odd squeals - please!). Trip to Ephesus was well worth it but ask your tour guide to skip the shopping bits and (learn a lesson from us) insist on being taken back to the hotel and not on a 2 hour round trip to pay you back for them not getting their commission for these visits!! If you like to dance and club music, the bars in Altinkum are great and inexpensive. Do try to speak in Turkish even if only to say please and thank you - it is very welcome. I've read lots about Turkish men and their attitude to women. There was a little of that but mostly I found everyone to be very polite, considerate and well mannered. They are mostly short but a few are tall and good looking too! If you have blue eyes be prepared to be closely examined - Turkish men adore ladies with blue eyes - disconcerting at first but once you realise they mean no harm by it its lovely.
Good value, well worth a visit!

We arrived at Palm Wings on 6th July and first impressions were very good. The buildings and grounds are impressive, the location is on the edge of the bay of Altinkum, some stunning views at sunset. We experienced a few minor probems - no curtains, safe not working, booked a different room, but they were so busy with sorting bigger problems out that we seemed to get forgotten about which was slightly frustrating as we were only there for 1 week. This did not spoil our holiday, and I imagine in another week or so most parts of the hotel will be finished because they seemed to be working hard to get things done. In just a week they had made excellent progress. The food was of good standard, the only thing I would say is it is slightly repetitive, i.e whatever's left over from dinner you will see for breakfast the next morning! Breakfast was probably the worst, but they were making changes as we were there and introduced an egg making station and they said they would be getting a toaster etc. The snack bar overlooks the beach and is self-service chips, burgers, pizza and spaghetti which is a nice informal alternative to dining in the restaurant. The a la carte restaurants opened on our last day but we had a look at the menu which looked OK, it is only 10 lira to upgrade (£4) per person so worth a try - just nice sometimes to be waited on! We ate out in altinkum one night for a change and had a lovely meal for a reasonable price. The centre of altinkum was buzzing at night, lots of families and people of all ages. The bars and restaurants stretch all down the promenade so lots to choose from (althought all the menus looked about the same as they do when you're abroad!). Drinks are a little limited, and the prices of the international brands were ridiculous £8 for a Jack Daniels and coke!! Rose wine was nice, beer is Efes lager, vodka and gin were fine, and the service is great. The nightly entertainment was not good at all, but they did try and they work all day so not sure they had practised what they were doing! Occassionally they have turkish belly dancers in which apparently are quite good, Pool area was fantastic, plenty of comfy sunbeds, and if you can't find one the staff will bring you one, or there are lots at the beach too. The slides are great fun but the lifeguard is useless and lets anyone do anything on them which is dangerous, one of our friends we met out there cut his head open on the bottom of the pool after coming off the yellow slide and ended up having 7 stitches. Just a word of caution to keep an eye on your own kids as the lifeguard didn' seem too interested. Weather was unbelievable hot and I didn't see a cloud all week, there was a gorgeous breeze and the manager says there is a breeze all year round which is a godsend as it keeps the temperature a little cooler. All in all we had a great week away and would definitely go back to Palm Wings. It is classed as a 5 star but this is Turkey remember so don't expect The Savoy!! We booked online and got a good deal, about £350pp but expect this is because it was brand new. For the price we paid we got a bargain, and I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
palm wing paradise
from harlawz
just back from palm wings resort turkey.......................i will put everyones minds at rest, this is a great hotel.brand spanking new...we did not have 1 complaint whatsoever, over the rooms food or drink...being brand new theres a couple of flaws(no local bacardi)...my wife and i got a villa so i dont know the actual size of the hotel rooms...we have enclosed picz....the nite cabaret is a bit corny but seems to keep the yougsters amused plenty going on during the day to keep eveyone amused. Building work that was still going on was limited to a small area at the private beach and caused no disruptions to us the day we spent there. Altinkhum is the nearest town...its a 10 minute stroll from the palm wing resort....IT IS NOT OF THE SAME STANDARD OF PALM WING RESORT......We only went down 2 nights and to be honest its more hassle than its worth.
palm wings shows potential
from timidtim67
We booked this hotel on teletext using a company called "holiday click" , before we actually booked we tried to check the hotel out on several review sites but it became apparent that the hotel was brand new and therefore no reviews existed yet . We then queried this with holiday click who assured us that the hotel had been open since april and all buildng work had definately been completed. On arriving however we found the hotel opened the day of our arrival (1st July 2008) and was not yet fully complete. Despite this fact we had a great time at palm wings and it was actually fun seeing the hotel be born and find its feet in that week. We were met on arrival at 4am and quickly taken to our villa room by the bell boy on a stretch golf buggy . At the time of our visit all the accomodation was in villas of which there seems to be 3 different types, the hotel block itself is still under construction but this shouldnt effect most people as it is out of the way and i believe to be used as part of the conference facilities being bult next to it. Our room/villa was a family room and consisted of two rooms - a large double room and a lounge area (with two double sofa beds, plasma tv, mini bar) . The lounge had a large sliding glass door witch led onto a sizable private patio, which in the case of our room (1625) overlooked a beautiful view of altinkum bay. Both rooms were air conditioned which was free and worked well. Safety deposit box was also free as were pool towels and sunbeds. In all the room was of a high standard and spacious with plenty of storage, though i could imagine the fitments may soon become shabby over time. The hotel centres around the very large pool , the first few days we were there, only about 30 guests were staying at the hotel so there was plenty of space and sunbeds but by the time we left all the sunbeds were occupied by about 9 am and i believe the hotel was still only half full, there are further sunbeds on decked terracing overlooking the beach but some of this is still under construction ( i would guess completion about the start of august) The beach itself is man made and pleasant though about five feet out feels kinda slimy. There is still some building work going on around the beach area - the disco bar is not yet ready and there is still a lot of decking going down but this is not too obtrusive and didnt detract too much fom the ambiance. All meals were served to us in the panarama resturant which is quite large and impersonnal but still acceptable. Food was good and what i would expect from a large all inclusive - sometimes repetative but a good choice , faddy eaters can use the snack bar (not open yet but served in the panarama when we were there) so the kids can have their pizza and burgers. Effectively food is served almost 15 hours of the day. Service started off well but then dipped but this could just have been the staff finding their feet as guest numbers increased . Most of the other, all - inclusive, facilities were not available to us as they were still having finishing touches done to them. The turkish bath, sauna, spa etc were just up and running by the end of our holiday and looked impressive ,the gym and hair dressers were not yet open but i doubt it will be long. Tennis courts maybe a bit longer as these are next to the conference facilities which are still being built. There is a kids club with there own building but as our youngest is 16 we cant really comment on it. The entertainment was not my cup of tea , the animation team were enthusiastic and friendly but in my opinion their shows were long winded and poor quality (sorry guys). As an overview i think palm wings has a lot of potential , sure at present there are a few rough edges but these are rapidly being sorted out . The place has a bit of a " new housing estate" feel to it - eg the grounds and landscaping are not yet established and there is builders dust hanging around here and there, - dont let this worry you - we are NOT talking living on a building site. The location of the hotel is fantastic - some villas over-look the bay and there are many beautiful vantage points to sit with a drink and watch the sunset. The area is quiet and the only noise you should here will be from the hotel. Altinkum is near enough for most people to walk - about 15 minutes to where the bars start and about 35 min slow walk to the centre. In all we had a great time ( two adults & one 16 yr old) We would definately go again and considered it great value but then we got a great opening deal - whether or not it will be value for money at full price depends on the price they set but palm wings IS about as high a standard as you will get in a turkish tourist resort now everything is pretty much ready.
Had a great holiday at the Palm Wings
from D_CTyrone
We have just returned from a week at the Palm Wings and it was brilliant. We arrived on the day it opened and the staff could not have been more helpful. As you could imagine, they were still trying to finish things off, but they could not do enough for us. Any slight problems (no curtains in our chalet, faulty door keys) were seen to immediately and as the week went on and they found their feet, it just got better and better. Maria, guest relations, always had a smile and no problem was too big or too small. The location is great, overlooking their own sandy beach and across the bay into the town of Altinkum which also has a long sandy beach (about 10-15 min. walk). Altinkum has lots of shops but some of the shop-keepers could be described as overzealous. The villas/chalets vary in size and our standard chalet consisted of an entrance hall, living room (with two fold out beds), bedroom and bathroom. It had two air-conditioning units which were very efficient, a mini-bar and a flatscreen TV that had English, French, German, Russian and Turkish channels. It was interesting watching the British Grand Prix with German commentary and the men's final at Wimbledon in Turkish. The hotel is all-inclusive and the food is extremely good and plentiful and even though I am a slightly picky eater, I always found a good selection that I could eat. The local beer, wine and spirits are all good and were sampled regularly during our stay. Everything else that you need for a good holiday is available on site (pool, slides, games, entertainment, etc.) and there really is no reason to leave the complex at all. Overall, I can only describe the hotel as very, very good and I will be booking another holiday at it in the near future.
just returned after a two week stay in palm wings, very disapointed in a number of things. booked this for 17 of us, read reviews and was impressed also said it was 5*. Not a chance, hotel was lovely and clean, rooms not comfortable but again were very clean. first... more
