Omni Cancun Hotel Reviews

Jul 2003, Mr G Bellingham

This was a fantastic holiday. The weather was wonderful, plenty of sunshine to relax in but mercifully not so hot as to force me to sit inside all day out of the sun! The hotel is excellent. The staff were very friendly from the moment I arrived and were always very... more

ME AND MY BROTHERS HAD A BLAST
Me and my 2 brothers just got back from the Omni on Feb. 28th, 2003. We spent one week there, We can find nothing bad to say about our stay. The food was excellent, the staff was incredible. Anything we needed or asked for we got it. When we were on the beach (which is the best i have seen in cancun in the 3 times i have been there) we got served everytime our glasses were empty, the staff was soo nice, always courteous and friendly. We had great meals, and always plenty to choose from. The room was very clean and the view of the bay was awesome. The swim up jacuzzi is the coolest thing i have ever seen and the only one of it's kind in cancun. We did the all-inclusive plan and would recommend anyone else do the same. Drinks and meals can get expensive otherwise. We had over almost a 3 thousand dollar liquor and meal tab when we left and it cost us nothing. i would definately stay at the Omni again, and will next year.
Not 5-Star, but good value.
First off, I have read nearly every review about the timeshare people. Did they stop me as I walked by? Yes, but I think most of those who fall for their free breakfasts or free gifts are people that really think you are getting something for nothing or are too afraid to tell someone no. I was just quick-witted with them and when they offered me a free meal, I responded by stating that I will only buy one of your timeshares if you in return pay for my monthly cabin payments in Missouri. They were caught off-guard and didnt know what to say. I just simply told them that I didnt care if you were giving me free meals for the week, I didnt fly all the way to Cancun to listen to someone try to sell me something that I wasnt even remotely interested in. I then told them to have a nice day and that I hope they are able to fill enough seats for their presentation, I was pleasant, but firm and told them with a smile on my face and I wasnt bothered again. We spent 5 days at the Omni (2/19-2/24), we decided on a Lagoon View room, European Plan. After doing much research on the AI versus EP plan, I am glad we settled on the EP plan. In my opinion, the AI plan only pays off is you eat 3 square meals on the property and drink like a fish all day long. The AI package was offered @ check-in for $79 per-day, per-person. We never exceeded more than $140 total on any given day, and on a couple of days we were less than $100. 2 of our 5 days we took a Snorkel-Tour and a shopping tour, in which took over ½ of the day and we purchased food and beverages off-property. I just think that the AI package is a bit over-rated unless you are absolutely gorging yourself and pounding drinks all day long, day after day while remaining on the resort. The rooms were average, nothing fancy. They probably need a little updating, but I dont spend much time there anyway other than sleeping. The signing for everything is a bit annoying, but if I knew I was staying in one place for a while, I told them to run a tab and they always did. The service was a bit slow at times, but fast at others. I have no complaints about the food, and actually the $8.95 breakfast at the Beach Restaurant I felt was a good value. The Beach and water was gorgeous, but the ocean was quite rough and the Red-Flag was out during our entire stay. That didnt stop many (including myself) going out to get pounded by some huge waves. I would see where an inexperienced swimmer could get in trouble out there, so I understand the red-flag pre-caution. I have read many reviews on this website about rude employees etc. I never once encountered a rude hotel employee during our entire stay. You will be treated how you treat others, I saw many people (not a knock on East-Coasters in general) with East-Coast accents being very rude to these employees. I know life is fast-paced on the East Coast and people want something yesterday, but using that East-Coast attitude will get you nowhere fast, especially when there is a language barrier. Remember, you are in Mexico, not NYC or Philly and things dont operate the same. My recommendation is to relax, be patient and respect others. All in all, I would give the Omni 4 stars out of 5. I had an overall positive experience at this resort. I would recommend it to others.
All inclusive Nickeled & Dimed
Do not get the "All inclusive" package, because they will Nickel and dime you every step of the way. This is not a relaxing way to spend a $5,000.00 vacation. The restaurant , bars, and sport equipment vendor are concessions. They do not care if you are "All inclusive" or not , they make you sign for every drink, every cup of coffee, every meal, every snack. They insist that you print your name, your room number, and then sign your legal signature. If you use the water sport equipment you better bring it back pronto after your two hours are up or you will be billed for the rental. And the staff does not hesitate to argue with you regarding any or all of the above. The overall fear in this place that the guest only wants to rip them off is palpable. It is not relaxing. The only good thing was the beach.
All Inclusive hotel posing as a resort.
Just came back from an All Inclusive vacation at Omni in Cancun.. Last year we went to Iberostar on Cosumel and had such a good time (good food, service, very relaxing, treated like royalty..) that we were keen to repeat our experience at Cancun.. wanted the wild waves this time.. We tried to book a similar trip and thought w Omni we'd be safe.. we were very wrong.. The food was lousy and repetive.. only three places to eat and one kicked us out bc we did not have reservations, even though they were nearly empty. ( I guess I made the mistake of thinking I was on vacation..) So we were limited to two.. No Coffee Bar, so even a morning cup of coffee was a hassle. You had to sign for every single item. (And I mean sign- print name, room # and full legal signature)The towel guy was a Nazi. The water sport equipment was a consession that constantly harrased you to make purchases.. The wait staff would refuse to serve you (after you waited in line for 10 minutes) if you asked for more than 2 items, I think bc they were afraid you were going to hand the items around to the non-all inclusive guests, when in fact, you were just trying to consolidate the hassle of getting refreshments.. and they did not hesitate to argue at length with you over your request. (I am not a demanding traveler, au contraire; these guys were very burnt out on tourists... but hey, is that my fault??) We paid alot of money to go down there and relax and instead we were hassled and nickled and dimed almost every step of the way We will not go again.. When I did speak to the concierge and the manager to resolve minor issues that the staff felt important enough to argue at length with me about, they were helpful, but it should not have gotten to that point. Cancun is going the way of Acapulco in our opinion.. the beach was nice, but beginning to show signs of wear and litter)Definitely not worth the money.
Pushy Time-Share Salesmen!
We were awaken by calls at 8:30 am to give you your "welcome package" which was to come and see the Omni Vacation Club 90 minute presentation (It was really 150 minutes). We called the front desk to get the calls to stop and they did not stop. The time-share salesmen were located in the lobby so you would have to pass them when you went to the beach, pool or outside of the hotel. They were too pushy! Overall, the rooms are nice, but the drink and food are overpriced for what you get. Mexican beers are $5. The mixed drinks are a little more expensive and are watery.
1/31-2/5/03
Room/ValueWe were able to get Lagoon-side rooms for approximately $130.00 a night plus tax, and the rooms were nice and given the hotel in total, quite a bargain. Nice sunsets and views of the lagoon, although there was quite a bit of a/c etc. noise, when on the balcony.FoodOnly ate at the pool grill and the hotel breakfast buffet. Felt the Buffet was not worth the $14us (there is another ocean-front buffet @ $8.00 that we did not try. Across the street, McDonalds breakfasts were fine (not exactly the same, but the differences were interesting). Captain Cove has a very nice breakfast buffet (and decent dinner). Beware, however that this is part of a time-share complex and, at breakfast you will be approached for a fairly unaggressive pitch by a nice lady with the fantastic name of Merryxmas (pronounced "Mareehamas). Pool grill was adequate, but no more.Drinks - expensive, and, in my opinion, other than at the jacuzzi bar (an interesting concept) not particularily potent. Drinks were around $5.50, with beers a little bit less There is a liquor convenience store accross the street if you wish to make your own.General Hotel Condition - nice, with onsite, convenience store, spacious lobby/bar and pools that were certainly less crowded then at Oasis next door (We strolled through that mega complex one day, noting a definately younger/party crowd).Check-in and out was a breeze. We checked in ourselves and were offered drinks by the very polite and attentive host.Location - this hotel is within walking distance of a few restaurants, including the excellent Crab House, and there is the McDonalds/Subway/Pizza mini food court directly across the street. You will need a taxi any where else, usually between 5-10 us (latter to Embarcadero area) Taxi prices are conveniently posted at the doorman station. The bus is only 60 pesos, and I would of taken it, but the crowd I was with wouldn't. The service looked frequent, and the buses looked in good shape.Staff- excellent in-room service. Nice, attentive hotel staff. Pool waitresses were reticent the first few days, but better after that. Time Share - you will be approached (and actually have to pass by the timeshare table. My advise (unless you want the gift - up to $100.00 us credit)is to accept the free drink coupon, the general (somewhat helpful) information provided, and then refuse to allow them to write the gift (which also involves scheduling a 90 minute breakfast/demonstration. Just say no. Otherwise you will be getting calls to remind you of your appointment (especially after you miss it)All-inclusive - Unless you are going to drink alot (and are willing to stay at the hotel to to it) I would not recommend it. I generally would only opt for AI in places I would not feel comfortable (like Jamiaca, DR). Cancun offers to much to be stuck in the hotel.Overall I would recommend this hotel
The Omni was Fabulous!!!
Talk about service! We were blown away with the friendliness of the Omni's staff. They went above and beyond to please and did so with a smile. Their pools are very nice, with a large swim up bar. We strolled a long way along the beach and after seeing numerous other hotels and beaches, we were very glad we chose the Omni. We spent a lot of time socializing at the jacuzzi bar, which is right on the beach. There were plenty of chairs on the beach and at the pools. The service on the beach and at the pools was excellent. We went with the all inclusive plan and were very glad we did. The food was delicious and we could get premium liquor. We will definitely return.
Excellent Stay As Always.
We just came back from another stay at the Omni Cancun (our 7th). As always the staff there is truly the warmest, friendliest staff of any place we stayed in Cancun or the Caribbean. It is wonderful to see the same smiling faces everytime we return and the fact that a good portion remember us by name, that makes all the differences to us. The beach facilities are still the best of any hotel in Cancun that we've visited (we have stayed at 5 other hotels so far, as Cancun is our favorite vacation spot). The all inclusive is worth it, as Da Vinci's is a fine restaurant and they serve name brand liquors ina ll their bars. I detest drinking call brands that are poured out of gallon jugs, which most all inclusives do. Our room was wonderful and comfortable. They have put coffee makers in all the rooms now with all the proper amenitites. Leticia, from the concierge, who is so helpful with everything, told us that they are also putting irons and ironing boards in all the rooms soon. If you want a good 4 diamond experience, this is the place. If you are looking for a Ritz Carlton or a Coral Beach, then you better go there, because this is not the Ritz nor Coral and by the way, we are happy it is not, as we feel truly at home at the Omni in a relaxed atmosphere with great service.
Not the best option
Just returned from a one week stay. Staff was exceptional and the hotel appeared to be very clean. The rooms suffered from a mildew odor. Obtaining chaises/chairs at the pool or beach was a HUGE problem. Unless you are willing to be up by 7 AM to go down and "reserve" your loungers with towels you are unlikely to have a place until late in the afternoon. Whe we suggested that this was a problem, we were told to please put this on our comment cards at checkout because there had been many complaints. Although I have not stayed there for several years, the Sheraton was a superior hotel in the same category.
Great place to stay
This is a great place to stay. We took our two kids (ages 11 and 8) and they had a blast. We chose the all inclusive and are glad we did. Everything is included. From the welcome drinks when we arrived to the ice cream snacks in the afternoon, the stay didn't cost us anything beyond what we had pre-paid. The workout facility is more than adequate with both a wide variety of cardio machines and free weights. The staff throughout the hotel is fantastic. I have never met so many people trying to please. They even aranged for a doctor to see our daughter when she was sick. The food was very good with a nice variety. Plenty of bottled water provided, but the purified water was fine. Yes they push time share and water sports, but not to the obnoxious levels I have encountered elsewhere. Once you told them you were not interested, they would back off. Beach is the best I have seen. Pure pristine white sand. Pools are cold, as the ocean was actually warmer. We would go back to the Omni in a minute.
