Just back from Cancun where we had a wonderful time! Weather not too good at first (although we were lucky not to have gone a week earlier as it had been even worse) but, by the second week, it changed for the better. The Cancun Clipper Club was a good choice for the... more

Best Hotel for Little to pay....and location is great!
We just got back from Cancun. We wanted a quick getaway for the least amount of money. The Best Western Clipper provided just that. It was no 5 star, but I would highly recommend this hotel if you are on a budget. The staff is great and friendly, and rooms are very clean. They do a great job keeping up with the appearance. We had no problems at all. It is an older hotel, but we still enjoyed our stay. The people that stayed there were great too, no loud, obnoxious spring breakers. The nightlife is right around the corner. Most of the nights we were there, we walked to everything. This is definately a bonus. I would consider staying at this hotel again next time I come! :-)
Clipper not without problems
This hotel has a few good qualities, but the bad outweighed the good in my opinion. My friend and I just returned from our stay at the Clipper on 2/2/04. First, the good: 1. location - within walking distance of everything and it is quiet at night 2. good room layout in the efficiency suites (though not enough room for storage in the drawers) 3. good water pressure - we were on the ground floor, but we had to insist on that Now the bad: 1. outdated electrical (we smelled something burning a lot) plus there aren't very many outlets 2. bad service/ customer relations - lost our reservation upon arrival; the maids hardly touched the rooms, and we found out we had to pay extra if we wanted the dishes washed (not my idea of vacation) 3. A/C inadequate - had to buy fan at WalMart because windows wouldn't completely close in kitchen. I did manage to schmooze a worker into assembling the fan for us by telling him the fan would be his when we left. 4. Junior suite mattresses were hard as bricks - seriously - and I had to go to WalMart again as my herniated disk couldn't handle it. While I was there, bought pillows also because I needed at least one that was halfway decent. 5. Front desk called us at 7:00 am to see about our transfer back to airport even though we had 3 more nights to stay - not good when you have been out all night! 6. Floor always felt unclean 7. Super bowl night - brought guests over and they tried to make me pay extra - even when I explained we were just watching the first half of the game and having some drinks before we all went out and they would not be staying (I guess that might be a plus for their security though.) 8. They didn't remove trash from your room (empty cans, bottles, wrappers, etc.) 9. They wouldn't let us use the door that opened to the patio are because of security reasons. Again, maybe that was a plus - we just found it inconvenient. So - it wasn't the worst place in the world, but far, far from the best. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are an ultra low-maintenance person that enjoys camping, waking up real early on vacation, and cleaning up your own trash and dishes.
A Very Basic BnB
A very basic bed'n'breakfast with an ok pool is what you get. Six of us lads "The che bunde" booked a summer hol which was an all out attack on Cancun, Mexico. Coz we packed a lot of activities into our trip we were looking for an average budget sort of hotel accomodation and AVERAGE is exactly what The CCC is. Don't expect too much of the rooms and extras around the hotel, they do the job (apart from the jacuzzi) but this hotel is best suited for a "Bed'n'Breakfast" type of stay. The location is not on the beach front but on the lagoon side however its only a 5min enjoyable walk past many restaurants to the beach - cool because by the time you walk back after a dip in the best white sand beach waters i've ever seen your completely dry!!! Despite not being near the beach front we found the location to be ideal during our many nights out. DONT BOOK your excursions from the hotel!! Go to the EXCURSION STANDS you'll find in the near by streets and here's a great tip: be shrewd and TRY TO HAGGLE with them, especially if theres a group of you - Honestly over the 2 weeks we made some great savings!!! Would definately like to go to Cancun again but next its got to be a sea front hotel.
Owner Since 1987
We have owned at CCC since 10/87. I spend a minimum of four weeks per year in Cancun two in March and two in November. We also own at a top 10 rated 5 star resort on the main beach so I feel qualified in saying that you get what you pay for and for some the savings will be worth the lack of amenities. CCC is not on the beach and, thus, the price reflects the lack of beachfront. The lagoon is clean and very private. The beach is only steps away. I would not recommend the resort to handicapped persons since there are no elevators. Other than that, the resort is a FABULOUS value if you plan to do a lot of sightseeing and stay busy. Speaking of tours and sightseeing, the Travel Agent here, Jorge Cevallos, is the BEST. Even if you don't stay at CCC, consider stopping by just to purchase tours. At the 5 Star we own, for example, transportation only to Cozumel is $46 and Jorge will get you there for $39 - my resort did not want to price match. I checked this price last week 11/17/03. This resort may not be for anyone who wants to sit by a mega 5 star resort pool all day and drink or admire amenities. For myself, I enjoy a more active vacation and am normally in my room at the end of a long day to sleep. I like to visit various resorts and use various facilities as I bore easily. Daily maid service is fine. Sylvia Pozos is usually around greeting guests and has been at the resort for years. There are new activity people who had me up dancing quite a bit at the Sunday Welcome Party. There is no pressure here to buy timeshare weeks as you will find at other resorts. When you consider Price/Value and if you do not care whether or not you are in a 5 star hotel, this is the place to be.
Fantastic 3 weeks at the Clipper Club
We have just returned from a fantastic 3 weeks at the Clipper Club. No bedbugs, no musty smells, no damp bedding and no dirty apartments. Instead the accommodation was spotlessly clean with daily maid service to keep it that way. Fresh clean towels and bed linen was provided every day if required and daily supplies of coffee and bottled water. The grounds and pool were well maintained and also spotlessly clean and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. We could not have asked for better service from the 3 young waiters and by the end of the holiday we felt like we had made 3 new friends. The restaurant/bar provided good food at a very reasonable price and the cheapest beer that we found in Cancun. The Clipper Club is comparatively small with a friendly, relaxing atmosphere and is ideal for chilling out. It is well located for restaurants, bars and nightclubs but unaffected by late night noise. For self-caterers there are supermarkets close-by with Walmart only a bus journey away. We certainly intend to visit the Clipper Club again in the future and find the negative reviews beyond belief.
Bed bugs will bite
The location is alright , you are walking distance from all the night clubs, flee markets, and public ocean. The resort looks nice and the rooms, but don't let the pictures fool you. You walk in your room and it smells real bad like a moldy smell, as you will see if you stay there there is no fan in the bathroom to remove moisture. The air condition is a wall unit that lets out a damp smell like six year old damp towels. The phone did'nt work for a couple of days because of a storm but it seems like everybody eleses phones worked just fine. Even though we had used our phone cards to call the U.S. we still got charged for I don't know what of $ 27.00 it just did'nt make sense. There were little ants in the room and in the kitchen so everything we opened had to be put in the fridge. The dish soap they provide sucked as if you were using hand lotion. We would also wake up with bites on our body that itched like crazy. Usely at a resort you would have a nice washer and dryer. It took 35 min to wash your clothes and ran as slow as a turttle. What they need to do is get new furniture and mattresses about every 5 years or sooner to make thier customer come back and be happy. The staff that worked there were very friendly and would always provide us with anything we requested right away. They also had great discounts on tours but the shuttle rides to certain place were alittle to much. When we checked out other hotels they called this place the Cancun Cheaper Club even the taxi drivers and they would laugh.
"Dee Cleeeper Club"
Four of us girls traveled to Cancun in May 2002 after graduating from college. We arrived at the hotel after spending several hours trying to find our luggage at the airport, which we never did. The staff was not very sympathetic or helpful in aiding us to contact the Cancun airport AT ALL. The next day we had an appointment to book our excursions from the hotel. Several attractions were highly recommended by the "concierge" and we took his advice. On of these was a "Sunset Cruise" as he called it... with an open bar and a fabulous view of the lagoon. WHAT IT WAS, WAS A RICKETTY OLD PONTOON BOAT with stadium seats that hurt your bottom. The open bar consisted of a 10 gallon jug of watered down margaritas. The "lagoon" was a polluted cove. We also took the "Carlos and Charlies" excursion. We were supposed to be picked up by chartered boat and taken to the restaurant and then be taken by chartered bus to Senor Frogs. We were told that the boat was broken and were taken to the restaurant by what we were told was a taxi. At the restaurant we had an AWFUL time. The waiters would not leave us alone, kept spilling drinks on us, and at one point made us participate in a "conga" line which led us into the mens bathroom where the lights were turned off and we were groped next to men urinating!!!!!! When we were ready to leave, our ride was gone and we had to WALK to Senor Frogs. SENOR FROGS WAS AWESOME!! Other than the young girls showing their bodies, which we sort of expected being in Cancun. When we told the "concierge" about our experience... he would not give us a refund. The jacuzzi also appeared broken, but we weren't sure if it just appeared that way because of the layer of skin and tanning oil on the top of the water. We went and bought groceries and really stocked up at the one place we found Bud-Light on the 3rd day of our trip our refrigerator stopped working! When we talked to the staff about it, they pretended they didn't speak any English. We made a friend at the hotel who spoke excellent Spanish and when he spoke to the staff, they would tell him they were taking care of things. We never got transferred to another room or got a refund. We had all brought prepaid calling cards, but learned halfway through our stay that we were being charged $1.00 every time we picked up the phone. This would not have been so bad if it didn't take 10 or 20 times to make a call go through. When we complained about our phone, they once again pretended they didn't speak English. The location of the hotel wasn't all that bad in relation to the nightspots, but they could light the walkway from the road to the actual hotel A LOT better. The food at the hotel was pretty good, as was the swimming pool. Our rooms were clean, and kept clean through our stay. The last day of our trip we went to Xel-Ha which was THE BEST! We had a great time there snorkeling. I would not recommend this hotel, but if you HAVE to stay here... DO NOT TAKE THE CONCIERGE'S ADVICE ON OUTINGS!!!
Basic - but everything you need
The hotel is very basic, and on first impressions you may feel jealous of those tourists in the huge marble palace's on the beach, however, this hotel has a more friendly and personal feel than those (I do speak from experience). It was very quiet (August 03), lovely gardens, no rushing for loungers, large pool, really nice , can actually swim !!. No crazy tour reps telling you where to be and what to do and at what time... The best thing about this hotel is the location. You could not get better, right in the centre of the resort, but not noisy as its really well set back of the main street. It is only 3 stories high, so it really has a nice little mexican villagey type feeling. We would go again. Excellent value for money. Free launderette, free loungers etc.
Great holiday
Stayed for 3 weeks at The Clipper Club (June 2003). Had a fantastic time. Excellent location, in the heart of Cancun but still quiet and private. Daily maid service, extremely clean and well maintained facilities. Anything needed doing - no problem - done within the hour. Friendly cheerful staff. Would go back again.
CCC is
I stayed at the Cancun Clipper Club in June 2002. I won the trip from a radio station contest, and overall, I was pleasantly surprised. As I recall, there was a security guard near the entrance of the hotel, which made me feel safer near the run-down buildings that are referred to in other reviews. There may be run down buildings surrounding the hotel, but the hotel, itself, was nice. True, the room was a little musty, but the scent was not over-powering. The a/c worked wonders; with temps in the high 80s and wicked humidity outdoors, we were able to keep the room in the 70s...very comfortable. We had a great view of the lagoon from our room, which was nice. Maid service was great as well. The location of the CCC was perfect for our needs; it was right in the heart of all the hustle and bustle Cancun offers, and just a short walk to the beach. Even though the CCC was great, I found myself a little envious of the people staying at the resorts. At the time of my visit, I was single and ready to have fun and party. There wasn't much going on at the CCC; in fact, it was nice and quiet, so I'd recommend it to those people looking for relaxation on their vacation. One great thing about the CCC was that their restaraunt had theme dinners each night at a pretty good price, and included in the price of the dinner was unlimited drink...some nights there was unlimited margaritas, and other nights was unlimited wine. This is nice if you want to get a head start on drinking before going out to the dance clubs, bars, etc. If I were to visit Cancun again, I would probably opt for an all-inclusive resort, since I ended up spending so much money on food and drinks. But if you want to experience the dining and nightlife Cancun has to offer, and are looking for a quiet place to stay, the CCC may be for you. Anyway, if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me and put CANCUN in the subject line. Hope you have a fabulous vacation, despite where you end up staying.
