Just back from Cancun where we had a wonderful time!
Weather not too good at first (although we were lucky not to have gone a week earlier as it had been even worse) but, by the second week, it changed for the better.
The Cancun Clipper Club was a good choice for the holiday, self-catering in a studio apartment rather than all-inclusive in the one of the very large hotels that seem the norm in Cancun, and I would definitely recommend it.
Mostly inhabited by Americans in their own apartments (there were only 8 of us from the UK on a package-deal staying there at the time we went), it was a very quiet resort set on the lagoon, with very friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you.
The apartments, although a little tired looking, were very spacious, with microwave, coffee maker and blender - all you needed to prepare breakfast (which is the only meal we had in the apartment).
Toiletries were provided; as were 2 bottles of water each day and a free packet of coffee. Queen-sized bed, TV, Radio, Air-conditioning and ceiling fan with a great view on to the lagoon - absolutely perfect!
We did have a problem a few nights when the wind was blowing across the lagoon as we could hear the techno-beat and revellers in a bar further down the road, which started at 2.00 a.m. and finished at 6.30 a.m. - not good for a peaceful night's sleep!!
When going to the beach (a 5 minute walk away) we used the City Beach Club and, through the hotel, got a 50% discount on the entrance fee and 15% discount on food and drink - worth going to as it had everything you wanted and you were waited on hand and foot by very friendly staff.
We knew Cancun was going to be a very touristy place (being a purpose built resort), but we were still surprised as to how commercialised it was!
You didn't see many people during the day (unless you were on trips) but the evenings were a completely different matter - suddenly you were surrounded by hoards of young people clambering to get into one of the many, many nightclubs and bars, all playing very loud music and competing with each other to get your business.
Luckily for us, as we didn't want that sort of entertainment, we were going back to the hotel as all this started, so not a problem.
Getting around Cancun was simply great as you just jumped on a bus - one arrived every 40 seconds (Ken Livingstone take note!!!) and ran from 6.00 a.m. to midnight - to wherever you wanted to go at just 6 pesos per person.
Even to go further afield you took the bus to the bus station and caught a connecting one to your destination.
Was slightly disappointed in the food - not into fast food, so Pizza Hut, KFC and McDonalds did not interest us - but TGI Fridays was a big let down, as was the Argentian Steakhouse (supposedly one of the best, but very expensive and food not that brilliant).
We found the smaller Mexican restaurants were best value, although after a few days of burritos and fajitas we did give the local Italian restaurant a go, which was very good.
On the whole, we enjoyed our holiday, albeit the dodgy weather and food, although I doubt we'd rush back there.
