My partner and me stayed at Club...

Aug 2004, Miss L Tregenza

My partner and me stayed at Club Portobello for a 2 week holiday, the complex is made up of several blocks. From the moment we walked into our 5 month old apartment block we knew we were going to be really impressed and we certainly were.
Apparently, you are allocated into the new block if you have booked through Thomson, which we had. To be honest we would have been more than happy to be placed in the other part of the hotel so this was an unexpected surprise.
The rooms were lovely and very spacious, the maid came to clean everyday of our stay. We had a kitchenette, fridge and two hobs. We had to pay for Air conditioning, which was £25 per week, an unexpected cost for us, but we saw it as an essential when temperatures were reaching 40 degrees.
The facilities were endless including 4 swimming pools, 4 bars, 1 open air restaurant, 6 waterslides, children’s play area, Hairdressers/barber shop, internet cafe, 2 mini markets, 2 jewellery shops its huge!.
There is something for everyone here from couples to families with young children. If you have children, they would love it.
Staff were friendly and couldn’t help us enough, they are very easy going and like to have a laugh and a joke. I would mention that drinks at the hotel were much more expensive than if you were to go out of the complex.
Entertainment was limited but included brake dancers, belly dancer and comedy shows some nights.
The hotel holds a weekly bbq on Wednesdays with costs £10 per adult, I think this is a must as there is so much to chose from.
Marmaris is a very large resort, there are plenty of ways to get around such as the local Dolmus 60p to go anywhere you like! however, these buses can get very full and the Turkish drivers tend to have limited English so I would suggest paying a little more for a taxi. We paid around £4 from hotel to the harbour approx 2miles away.
The Marmaris market is held every Thursday and you can pick up some great bargains. A good tip is to never buy at the first price you are given, they expect you to barter so be cheeky and do it. One shopkeeper wanted £30 for two jumpers we left the shop with two jumpers for £15!!!
The beach is a 5min walk away, cross the road and walk straight down and you are there. It isn’t very wide but very long and is made up of sand/shingle. We hired a jet ski, which was so much fun is cost £25 for 30min this is a lot cheaper than other countries we have visited in the past.
When visiting Turkey I strongly recommend taking lots of Diocalm tablets with you because of the change in the way food is cooked most people tend to get short lived stomach upsets. However, my partner fell ill with a stomach infection, luckily at Portobello there is an onsite doctor who came within ten minutes and who spoke very good English. He told us that the medication would be at reception in 30mins and it was. All I can say is what a brilliant service.
In the 2 weeks we were in Marmaris, we saw a lot of shabby, small unsuitable accommodation I suggest you really look into where you stay to save a ruined holiday.
Overall, our holiday was brilliant and we would certainly return to the Portobello.

Dear Sir/Madam This probably not...

Dear Sir/Madam
This probably not what you want to hear but I feel strongly that this complex be looked closer copies of this letter and other that were in our party has already been sent to First Choice.
I am writing to express my utter disgust from holidaying at the Club Portobello. After reading, some very good write-ups about the complex I was looking forward to my holiday, which my son and I I had saved all year for. We each paid over £500 for this holiday.
On arrival we were allocated our room and to my dismay the room was awful very small, and dirty with rubbish outside the door. On checking with the party that we came with I discovered that I had the smallest room, I had a double bed for myself and my son had to sleep in the living area which was so small and extremely hot that he could not sleep in, my son is 19 years old and did not want to share a double bed with his mum, the door on the balcony did not shut (and took 3 days for someone to come and fix) so had to be left open to say they were basic is an understatement. On that first day each family complained to our rep whose name was Rachel, she then proceeded to inform us that complaints are made on a regular basis about the accommodation, if this is the case how come First Choice are still sending families to this complex that is of very poor standard.
When the cleaners came in all they did was empty the bins and tidy the beds, the sheets were not changed regularly and we only had 2 towels one each, the only time they were changed is if you threw them on the floor by the door and was lucky enough to catch a maid and ask for clean ones, we was then told that towels were not changed on a regular basis because the washing machines had broken down.
The swimming pools were all extremely dirty and unhygienic with things floating in them and tiles missing from the bottom of the pools. The slides that are attached to the large pool are very unsafe with no supervision on them so that people are aloud to come down them one after the other without people first being able to swim away from the slides (quite a few accidents happened with people coming down the slides and falling on top of each other).
The grounds area around the pools where people sunbath also had wild chickens and cats causing much annoyance and nuisance to all running around which is not very hygienic especially if you had food as they would come and take it also I don’t think that chicken faeces all over the grass is healthy either as people then step in this and then go into the pools so they are now even dirtier.
I have never stayed in a place that has been so unhelpful or been subjected to conditions that should not now still be available to families.
What should have been an enjoyable holiday for me, my son family and friends turned into being a nightmare holiday experience.
26 of us stayed on this complex most of us suffered ear infections and sore throats some which needed hospital treatment, I have stayed in Turkey many times before and this is the first time that I have stayed in a place that should be called a slum.
A copy of this letter and letters from the rest of the party is being sent to Watchdog and we are asking that they investigate this holiday complex. If you First Choice have been told about this complex on numerous occasions why are you not doing something about this, instead of keep sending families to this complex.
I feel very strongly that this matter should be investigated as a matter of urgency and reimbursement and compensation should follow immediately concluding your investigation.

Jun 2004, Not Specified

I do not know how anybody can slate this complex, this is the best Holiday that I have ever been on in my entire life, and I have been back year after year since the first time I went.
I thought it was quite appalling when you look at some of the comments that people have made i.e. 3/10 etc.... Turkey is a third world country and the people there are extremely poor hence the reason they cannot afford 5* luxury apartments like you would get in Spain, and this is why the living costs and accommodation there is very basic.
Overall I would recommend this accommodation to anybody. and if you are looking at Holidaying there, please do not be put off by what people have said about it on the customer reviews, cause they are just all to fussy and picky.
