DO NOT STAY AT THE PHILOXENIA!!!!!!!!
For my first holiday without parents, me and the girls decided to go to MALIA, and stay in the PHILOXENIA hotel. from seeing images on the official website, we had built up an idea of what it should look like, On arrival we were greeted by an empty reception and a non-English speaking maid. After 40 minutes of trying to communicate that we are suppose to be guests staying in the hotel, (Despite all our cases and luggage present) The bar manager gave us a room, which in fact was not our correct room and promised it will all be sorted in the morning. When entering the room, we were very disappointed, although it was very clean, it bore very little resemblance to the images on the site. We were NOT TOLD about any safety features (Fire assembly point, a safe within the wardrobe etc).
THIS IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING... Its our first night, had an amazing night clubbing we look forward to retiring back to the hotel for a decent sleep. At this point in time the reception area is still open, the receptionists asks us for our room key and how many people are in the room, before allowing us through the corridor. We open our room only to find we had been ROBBED. Our formally locked cases had all been slashed open and torn apart. Our clothes and belongings are all over the floor and the room had been ransacked. The robbers left the garden door open and there is a huddle of cockroaches in the corner of the room. All our Euro, Mobile phones, and two digital cameras had been stolen, leaving us with nothing but our passports!!!
We frantically run back to the reception area, screaming we've been robbed, the receptionist does not seem surprised, I assumed perhaps it had happened before. They explain that there is nothing they can do until 10am in the morning, when the police station is open. Unwilling to spend another night in that room, feeling terrified, we wait up until 10am, the police are called and the demand to see the CCTV. we watch the CCTV tapes with them only to find that during the hours of 5am-7am THE CCTV CUTS OUT COMPLETELY!! we were robbed at 5:30am. We are both completely baffled and absolutely fuming, our attention is quickly draw to a group of EIGHT GIRLS, running into the hotel reception saying, they too have been robbed! The manager and owners are quickly called to the reception, the blasé attitude of the hotel owner was seriously concerning. However with not a penny with us, we were determine along with the other 8 to get to the bottom of it.
IF IT WAS AN OUTSIDE JOB, WHY WERE THE CAMERAS TURNED OFF, THEN MIRACULOUSLY BACK ON AFTER ALL THE ROBBING HAD TAKEN PLACE? we were then told by the hotel manager, who unlike the owner was sincerely confused and also wanted to know what happened, a camera views the reception area, this of which is the only camera that can never be turned off, if the cameras were deliberately tampered with, you would be able to see it from this camera. The owner from the beginning made it clear no one would be allowed access to this footage, he did however say, if anything is identified we be notified. It became clear that his staff had organised the various robbings that took place that morning, as he refused to call the police, refused to reimburse us for anything lost or damaged, there were 12 girls standing in the lobby that afternoon screaming and crying because there personal belongings had be stolen from a place they called 'home' temporarily while abroad, and more to the poing STOLEN BY THE PEOPLE PROVIDING THE ACCOMODATION. It wasn't just the fiasco with the cameras that made it clear it was an inside job, the reluctance of the hotel owner to involve the police, all the guests targeted were 18-19 year old females, whilst looking on the CCTV the "handy man" was captured on camera walking round it TWO of the rooms that were burgled!
Following this all the girls involved booked a flight home, thanks to our lovely parents and my holiday was cut short after ONE DAY!!!
BASICALLY GUYS, DO NOT STAY AT THE PHILOXENIA!!!!!!

The Philoxenia apartments are ideally located, approximately 100 metres to the beach, in a quiet side road, yet not far from Tavernas and shops.
They are kept lovely and clean and have a balcony that looks out to fields with the sea in the distance.
Across the road is a Taverna serving snacks and beers. The local owners live in the basement apartment and are very hospitable.
There are bars and tavernas along the beautiful promenade, all night discos are there too for the young, but no music is allowed outdoors after midnight. You can If wanted, get a meal any time of the day or night.
There are evening cruises available at the pier, we went on a moonlight cruise which was fantastic, and you sit and watch the sun going down and the moon rising, very romantic.
The beaches are cleaned overnight and are spotless; the azure sea is warm and very clean.
In all, I would recommend these apartments and Kardamena for a wonderful romantic holiday.
