No pun intended but surely the most optimistic name of an appartment complex in history. Unfriendly staff, disgusting state of rooms, which had yellow stains on the walls, no doubt due to numerous cockroach kills which where entirely necessary. The bathroom floor moved like... more

Me and 8 of my mates went to tenerife for two weeks in june 2009 - the holiday in general was amazing! We were a bunch of 18 year olds so we weren't exactly expecting luxury, the apartments are basic, but they were very clean, the maid came every two-three days with toilet... more

Me and my boyfriend recently returned from playa de las americas and we loved every minute of it! However, the apartments could only be described as basic. We arrived at the Optimist around 9pm and it was dead, nobody around whatsoever. The man at reception didn't speak... more

Just back from a girls holiday. These apartments are absolute garbage. They should just knock them down and start again. It's got two 'keys'(instead of stars) and they should have none. We were on the top floor so we were pretty lucky to not have any cockroaches, but we did... more

Stayed at the optimist apartments for 2 weeks in February 2009, and apart from a group of 20-35 year old men on a stag weekend the apartments are very quiet and comfortable. Once the stag party left it was peacefull again. The maid service was a bit erratic but overall it... more

Five of us went out and we didnt expect it be as great as it was. Accomodation is basic but in the height of the summer the reps make the holiday brilliant. Go to the Foam party and the Booze cruise!!!!!!
Def would go back every year!!!
We went back a few months later and it was even better..

would not recommend
This is NOT a place for disabled people. Three floors, no lifts. Steps to get to Reception and to leave it. Very unhelpful person behind desk. Passports taken. given a key, shown room on a map (complicated) and left to your own devices. Room required a great deal of refurbishment, scruffy, dirty floors. peeling paint (a horrid shade of green), cockroaches leaking bath, showerhead could not be adjusted. No sun if your rooms are on the right side of the reception area. Plus points convenient to beach and plenty of restaurants. Would not stay there again.
You will need to be an optimist!
These apartments are basic to say the least. The decor would have been more accurately applied if the management had employed my 6 year old Daughter. The guy in reception seemed to get his daily kicks from teasing my 3 children. He was a miserable short tempered man who bearly spoke to my husband and I. The rooms are very basic to say the least. We were a family of 5, including 3 small children, we were placed on the 2nd floor and had to climb lots of steps every day - even though the complex was half empty for the duration of our stay! The rooms are a good size though and the maids come every other day to supply clean towels and apparently they did change the bedding. The swimming pool area was OK for an hours fun with the children in the water - for sunbathing I would not recommend it as almost half of it remained in the shade all day every day. At night the apartments were very cold, and very noisey. The location for the beaches was fantastic, this was the best thing about the accomodation. We had a fabulous holiday, we made the best of what we had, Tenerife is great But I would not choose to stay here at these apartments again. I would recommend these apartments to groups of singles who are holidaying in Tenerife to party and sunbathe who want a cheap stay in tenerife and are not worried about where they sleep!
not bad went there with partner
apartment was fine, if u have any issues with ur room try to speak to the lady manager, if not dont listen to anybody else telling u shell be back in five minutes coz she wont. reason being she is the only one who can speak english. any probs with bed sheets get it sorted in morning as cleaners go by about 11.30. apart from that its a nice place quite at night and feels comfy with nice clean pool. try to get the left hand side as thats where the sun is most of the day.
Few helpful tips..have fun!!
Have to agree with all the other reviews the Optimist is very basic but good location. Must point out that there are no lifts and carrying our suitcases up three long flights of steps up to our room after two flights of stairs from the reception was very gruelling and not recommended for old people. The appartments are large with sufficient kitchen, good sized bedrooms and a good balcony overlooking the pool. Having paid only £60 each for a six night stay we didnt expect five star luxury..but all in all got what we paid for. Catch the 487 bus just outside the airport it will cost you 2.10 euros takes 15 mins and drops you off outside the appartments. The appartments are surrounded by 4star hotels so you can go watch the entertainment in these hotels and with plenty of restaurants you are spoilt for choice with dining. For the young singles catch a cab 3 euros to Veronicas Strip where you can rave till the early hours. For food shopping go to Mercadona supermarket round the corner its the cheapest as we were eating out three times a day for the first two days which was taking all our money. So after spending 20 euros in mercadona we had breakfast and lunch in the appartments and ate out in the evening which saved us a fortune. Recommended for all types as there were singles, couples and one or two families with children...a perfect mix of holiday makers.
A Perfect Base
We went to Tenerife for a girly laugh and found our apartments to be ideal. They were basic but has everything you needed, you could even HIRE irons from reception. We are currently booking to go again next year and we want to stay in the same place as it was convienient for the beach, shops and the nightlife was 5 minutes walk away. What more do you want, the pool is claen and the towels and bedding was changed 3 times - we were only there a week. fantastic and would recommend to anyone who want a base and spend most of the time out anyway.
Excellent location but not luxurious
The optimist certainly could not be classed as luxurious, but is functional and our 2 bed apartment was very large and spacious. Kitchen was fully equipped and bathroom good. Cleaners came in every other day and plenty of towels and bedding were provided. Ground floor apartments have patios leading straight to the pool, first and second floor apartments all have balconies and overlook the pool - around which there are plenty of sunbeds and parasols- we never had trouble getting 2 or 3 together, whatever time of day. Theres no air conditioning but one half of the building is often in shade and is cool in the evenings - the other is always in sunlight so be careful. All attendants and staff WERE friendly and helpful - problems were sorted quickly. There is no entertainment on site though. It is however extremely convenient for most things - Los Cristianos is a 5 minute walk one way and Las Americas 5 minutes the other way. Access to both beaches is quick. We preferred Los Cristianos - much cleaner and more modern. The best restaurants and shops are there too. Every excursion or trip you can go on picks up from the hotel directly opposite - which is a 1 minute walk. There are free buses to most local attractions. But taxis are cheap anyway. The biggest problem with the Optimist is that it can't quite work out what it wants to be .. it was half full of families with young children (like us) and half full of 18-30s so it can tend to get a bit noisy in the middle of the night. Overall, we had a great time - the only thing you could complain about was the noise in the night.
not as bad as expected
We booked without a brochure and when we checked the web for details we were waiting on a disaster. It didnt happen. The pool was clean, the staff (except night porter who didnt speak much english) were very helpfull. The rooms were basic but functional. The kids loved the swing park and the food at the bar was ok. I did have a strange insect in the kitchen but it ran faster than me. Very noisy as it backs onto one of the main roads, but close enough to everything. enjoyed it as the pool area was brill for kids, shallow enough for me not to have to be in all the time. Life gaurads all had a different approach, some a bit lax, others very good.Relax and enjoy.
Well budgeted and good location
Travel date: 1st week of September 2005. A TripAdvisor Member, London UK Holiday type: Lads Stayed at this hotel because of its location and reasonable price. The hotel is average, I believe a 3*. At arrival the reception staff requested our passports and said we could collect them the next morning, this seems to be normal practice, we were also intructed to leave a 20 euro deposit. However, the guy on the reception desk was also blunt with us and stated that if we caused any trouble we'd be thrown out straight away and would lose our 20 euro deposit. The deposit was returned in full on departure. The pool is well sized for the 3* status, it does however get busy and can be difficult to get a sunbed, would recommend throwing a towel on a sun bed in the morning to reserve a spot. Best time in the pool is after 17:00 when it's quieter. Rooms: Our rooms both had balconies as do all rooms from looking at the lay out of the hotel. The rooms are basic, twins will have two singles and a sofa bed. Quads have four singles and two sofa beds, however you would all have to share a bathroom! The standard of the bathroom probably lets the rooms down the most. A bit dated and could be improved. The kitchenette area was ok, clean fridges and worktops. Do watch out for mosquitoes, they are around! Location: The hotel is located in close to americas. The main bars i.e. Busby's and Bobbies are about 15 minutes walk away. Generally, most people dine late (10:00ish) and head for the big named clubs at midnight when they liven up. Overall view: Ideal spot for people 18-30 out for a good time. Would not recommend families here, unless they are after a budget holiday. Fairly close to the airport Hotel is close to Princess hotel, where coaches depart from for theme parks and other excursions. Works out cheaper to book these from shops.
OK place to stay
We stayed at the optimist from 20 March to 24 March 2006 .Found the appartment clean & tidy . We arrived at 11.55pm and found the reception very friendly and helpful. We were a party of nine incluiding a pensioner of 76 and 3 18 to 23 year old lads plus two couples.Only downside we found was that the snack bar/drinks bar did not open until the monday appart from that no problems at all. optimist or pesimist?? you decide
as we arrived the place loked like it may be ok, untill we walked in to be greatind by very unhelpfull man behind the recption, who took our passports from us and told us to collect them the day after. we was given our key and shown on a map and shown where it was. we could not beleve it a cold damp room with 2 single beds a small kichen with 2 pans and very little culery. the TV has the buttons removed so you have to rent a remote so take a unversal one if you have one. the shower has enough water for one shower but you have to wedge the shower head in with toilet roll to make it stay there. as you enter the complex you hav a left side and a right side if you get the right side dont expect a tan from you apartment as it dose not get any sun all day it is the dark side all day cool in the day and cold in the night. the other side get sun all day so ask to go there if possable. hope this has been ok for you all
