Worth Missing

Just back from a very disappointing week in Tenerife. Not helped by poor weather, as there's nothing to do in Golf Del Sur if you're not a golfer. The hotel appeared on the Sunmaster website as a fabulous 4 star property, situated on a golf course, with adjoining Spa. The reality is that the golf club is at least 1/2 mile up the road & has nothing to do with the hotel at all. The Spa is in a separate building altogether & although we understood we would get a 10% discount as we were hotel guests, we were charged the full rate. I enjoy a massage and have been to a few spas & salons but the massage I had here was below par, not the usual relaxing experience. There wasn't even a hairdryer in the changing room. Without the Spa as a facility, in my opinion the hotel just makes it as a 3 star. We were on a half board basis, which was all buffet style. Breakfast was okay with a fair selection but evening meals were uninspiring & repetitive. They actually recycle the food the next day, chopped up and mixed in mayo etc. if it's not been eaten. Again not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. Our room was on the ground flloor with a bus stop right outside the window. We couldn't sleep for both the noise of the planes (hotel is right under flight path, although not told on website), and the noise from the buses idling outside. When we asked to be moved to a quieter room, we were told only if we paid an extra 15 euros per day. Really - go somewhere else!! An absolute disappointment & not at all as it's marketed as on the website.
food left lot to be desired !

Fantastic place

We heard a few bad reports on this hotel and were a bit worried as we had already booked on a promotional week to come here, but we need not of worried. On arrival, we were promptly checked in and taken to our room, which although were not top class, they were comfortable enough and spotlessly clean. Taxi cost 11Euros, but always agree a price with the driver first or you may end up paying double. Maid services is excelland and although ours didn't speak much, she had a pleasant manner. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we were room only, but it looked nice enough. Area itself has shops, bars and restaurants and there is a bus stop if you wish to visit Los Cristianos or Las Americas. All in all a good experience for us, even though we had to attend a "no strings attached" presentation meeting. We did not feel pressured to purchase anything further which was a plus.
More than Okay - just!

Like many people, we we there as part of a promotion, so the value for money was fantastic (£155 for a week in a spacious one-bedroom apartment, with full kitchen, though no microwave). It was clean, simply furnished with a good balcony offering a rather distant sea view, with building sites in between. Staff at reception were pleasant enough, but unhelpful when you had a problem. After two days the BBC World channel disappeared from our TV screens; we and many others complained every day with no effect - the manana attitude prevailed all week. The pool is pleasant and the Spa has good (but not free) facilities and excellent massage. Thanks to previous Tripadvisor reports, we avoided the hotel food and entertainment. There are plenty of places to eat in the vicinity - especially if you hire a car (highly advised at only £11 per day). We recommend Las Adelfas, 2 mins up the road from the hotel. At San Blas, the Peruvian restaurant El Init and The Lobster Pot, at Los Abrigos the Perla del Mar and the Pesca del Pais, in Las Galletas the Colibri. This hotel will appeal to golfers, and those who prefer relative quiet and who find the other parts of the island tacky. With a car you can drive to the volcano - a 3 hour round trip - and along the west and east coasts - but don't take it on the ferry to La Gomera. The coach tour of this unspoilt island is excellent value. So, if you are offered a cut-price deal at this hotel - take it. Otherwise, there are better 4-star establishments in better locations.
Okay I Suppose

We are a family of 4 who visited with our 2 kids (15 & 17) with their boyfriend/mate. We usually travel 4/5 star and travel a lot. We go to places such as Tenerife for a break rather than a holiday. This holiday was a bit of a freebie with a timeshare operator (we own timeshare) The hotel is classed as 4 star but probably a 3 star at best. Goods Points 1. Very clean and tidy 2. Large pool area with 1 pool heated 3. Located in Gold Del Sur ( a fairly quite place, no discos or fun pubs etc) 4. Taxi rank just outside 5. Nice and quite for a relaxing holiday. 6. Small basic kitchenette in room (we had a 2 bed with a lounge) which was ok for snacks, drinks etc 7. Lifeguard on duty all day, and mini club for kids (not ours who were too old) 8. One or two nice restauarants in town (Gullivers is good), but some tacky bars with Mr Piano Man playing (some people will love this I am sure) Not so good points 1. Hotel a bit basic as far as furnishing etc 2. Hotel buffet (we only did breakfast) was 5 Euros, with hot and cold buffet. The cold buffet was ok (usual fare) but the hot buffet was awful (bacon, sausage, eggs (yuk!). Never did evening meal 3. Miserable staff which at the pool terrace bar, which opened late and closed early. Food okay at best with not a great deal of choice. 4.Enetertainment really awful and tacky 5. No beach in the resort and a fair (15 mins) walk to the 2 main areas -the Square and the New Marina (not as grand as it sounds). 6.Take a walk to Los Abrigos along the promenade (quite nice - about 20 mins) which is a tiny fishing village with 7-8 restauarants Summary An okay hotel in an ok place, especially if you like somewhere quite and safe. If you want a change (which we did) Los Christianos is 18E in a taxi and about 15 minutes
Golf del Sur - a little close to airport?
from Baxdoll
Stayed at the Golf Plaza hotel. Nice hotel if you happen to overlook the pool and not placed on the street side! However hotel virtually on airport landing strip and so that can be unnerving. Lots of steps and hilly areas so unsuitable for unstable walkers. Our first night we visited the chinese at the bottom of the hill. This restaurant produced the worst chinese food we had ever tasted. However, the Italian next door was excellent!
Made Me So Welcome! Me Encanta Golf Plaza Resort! Muy Bien!!!!!

Liked the island, didn't like this hotel or the area it is in
from jonezone
Just returned from a week in Tenerife - our first visit there - we liked Tenerife but not this hotel. The hotel is very impressive at first sight, but lets itself down on a few counts. We arrived in the evening and asked where to park our (hire) car - we were told either to park on the street (packed) or we could use the hotel's underground car park for 10 euros a day or 50 euros for the week. This was the first surprise. We opted for the car park as there was no space in the street and the complex is a one way system that takes about 5 mins to drive round - you could be driving around forever. The next day we found out that there is a free car park adjacent to the hotel, but we had already signed up for the car park - felt ripped off. As we had arrived late we opted to eat in the hotel - buffet style for 12 euros - OK was about all we would say about it - we didn't bother eating there again. The rooms are large and reasonablyy furnished, but wouldn't describe them as comfortable - the kitchen only had two hotplates, no microwave, and no basic provisions. The noise transference from other areas of the building was dreadful. We were kept awake two nights by people above us either arriving or leaving - we could hear the shower going and footsteps clomping backwards and forwards. From 9am every morning we could hear the cleaners dragging beds backwards and forwards. Having said that, the cleaners did a very good job and were friendly. The entertainment in the hotel was dire - don't even bother going in there. The San Blas area - about 15 mins walk away has plenty of places to eat - cheap and cheerful English restaurants in the main square, or for the more adventurous, a really nice and reasonably priced Peruvian restaurant called El Init in one of the side roads behind the main square. The best place we found to eat was the restaurant at Las Adelfas - turn left out of the Golf Plaza hotel and it is about 100 yds along on the opposite side of the road. The breakfasts are really good and cheaper than at Golf Plaza and the evening meals are fresh, good quality and reasonably priced with some Canarian specialities. You have the added bonus of being (politely) shouted at by the head waiter - he does not discriminate - but shouts at everyone - and woe betide anyone who dared to walk straight into the restaurant and sit at a table without waiting to be seated - they were marched straight back into the bar area until he was ready to seat them - worth a visit for the entertainment value, but the food is really good too. The final annoyance with the hotel was that we had an early flight and asked for an alarm call at 6am - which we didn't get. Fortunately we had set our alarm clock anyway. One comment on the area - which doesn't have much in it except the golf course and the San Blas centre - it was bright and sunny every day until midday then a great big black cloud appeared overhead and stayed there for the rest of the day - and this happened every day for the week. However, on going the 10km or so to Los Cristianos we found that the sky was clear and sunny, so whether that was just odd weather during our week or whether it is the norm for the area I don't know, but I certainly wouldn't book to stay there again.
Very nice but some reservations

My wife and I spent 8 days in this resort and liked it a lot. We found the staff very nice. The room itself, however, was really quite basic. It was let down by several points which would have cost so little to put right. We were disappointed that there were no ' starter packs' requiring us to have to go after arrival to buy some basics. These included washing up liquid, a J cloth and milk and bottled water. Be advised that the supermarkets are a real 'rip- off' but if you need items, you have just got to pay the price. There is no microwave in the kitchen and with prices of these items plummetting, there is no excuse. There was no table lamp in the lounge but we kept bringing one through from the bedroom. The verandah was very large and overlooking the pool. This is a spa resort and I am totally opposed to having to pay for using the indoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi etc. the place at 15 euros per session was a let down. Lets face it - you may just want a quick swim and have to pay the same amount. It was understandably underused. Thje outside pool is cold!! The resort is well kept but if it could be transported to a much nicer area, it would probably be ideal. We never had breakfast in the hotel but we did have three evening meals - 2 meals too many!! The first night was very good but the next twice was really quite disappointing and I would never grace the dining room again. Getting about by bus (always use a Bonoticket) was good. I would say the taxis locally are expensive. The 15 -18 euro airport transfer was a rip-off. It is only 5 miles. On leaving, I left my camera and despite e mails and phone calls, at the point of writing, I still cant get correspondence from them to satisfy my insurance company - just a letter is all I am asking!! Local restaurants are quite good but can be British prices. I wouldnt even bother going to San Blas shopping centre nor to the local fishing village although I am told the food is good.
As the title suggests the quality of the apartment was first class. Both spacious and comfortable with adequate cooking facilities, two ringed hob with full oven. Waiting staff very attentive, but the food on the whole was poor. Although, once you'd had a couple of meals... more
