We have been going to this hotel on and off for 20 years now. The decor is a little faded and in need of refurbishment, but the Hotel Manager and his staff are very welcoming and do everything they can to ensure you have a good holiday. There is a Norovirus bug in the... more

We have had 2 really good holidays at this hotel in years gone by so decided to return for New Year. What a mistake, the soft furnishings in the rooms are well past their sell by date, the room cleaning on a daily basis was poor (bathrooms not touched) and the food was like... more

The hotel is known locally as 'Los Geriatrics' and for good reason. It is full of OAP's, the majority of whom spend a good few weeks out there every year. One woman has her own plaque celebrating her 60th visit! As a result there is very much a feeling of clique within... more

My wife and I have gone to Los Gigantes for a number of years, but always self-catering. We went half board at the hotel and while it was a pleasant stay, there are a couple of niggles. It is getting a bit tired and, as others have mentioned, the carpets, rugs and public... more

Comfotable,but a little tired
The hotel is a pleasent hotel but reminds you of the sort of hotel you used to go to when you were a child (I'm 50). Indeed some of the guests have probably been going that long! The hotel divides into two sorts of people. The older set who like to be around the main pool with it's rows of regimented sun loungers, (all measured to the nearest inch!) and the youger or young at heart set around the informal pool where despite the best efforts of the staff the sun loungers could not be placed so regimentally. The day starts with certain of the older guests rushing at 8.00am sharp to grab a sunbed (even though you are supposed not to). It's a good spectator sport from the balcony. It is not neccessary to do this because there is always lots of sunloungers available. The food at the buffet is not bad or though it is a bit predictable. It is well worth escaping and trying some of the local restaurants who serve some good dishes which are a bit more locally based. The rooms are of a good size and not bad but could do with some refurbishement. They are looking a bit dated now and could do with perhaps a more contemporary approach. Views are great form those higher up overlooking the sea. Beware of the air conditioning. Only put it on if you want to warm your room up. We think they turn it off when people go to bed! The lighting in the corridors could do with improving and the public rooms with all the chairs and tables remind you a bit of an old peoples home. The staff though are pleasent and there is not much competition if you want to stay here - one of the best towns on Tenerife. The Barchello though which is currently being refurbished may well be a good bet in the future. The entertainment is something which you either love or hate, but at least its all finished by midnight. In summary its comfortable, foods OK but in reality if you travel a lot then the hotel is really a three star+ and certainly not four stars. if you want a good four star then go the Abama or to the Bahai del Duque .
Great Holiday
Just returned from a week at the Los Gigs.We both loved it.The staff, food and location are all superb. The only negative we could pick on is the fact that the hotel itself is looking a little tired.A lick of paint and some new carpets and it will be as good as new.If you want a nice, relaxed, quiet holiday this is the place to go.
Fantastic Holiday
We have never been on a Thomson Gold Holiday before but we will certainly be going again. A highligh was no young children running around. The Hotel Los Gigantes was fantastic - the staff were brilliant, remembering your drinks where you liked to sit etc and always greeted you with a handshake and a kiss for the ladies. The food in the restaurant was exceptional - so much choice and such good quality with each dish being named and diet options being pointed out. The waiters were all very helpful and polite. Our bedroom for three of us was large although only an ordinary room -there was plenty of room and it felt airy and spacious and the large fridge was most acceptable. The whole of the hotel was so clean and well maintained. The resort itself was quite quiet, just as we like it and plenty of little bars etc to wander around if you wanted to. The cliffs and hotel setting were magnificent and we certainly didn't want to come home. We didn't do a lot during the day except relaxed around the two fabulous pools on sunbeds. There were enough beds for everyone and also sun umbrellas which is quite unusual. We went on a couple of trips around the Island and also to the caberet 'Raffles' which I can highly recommend. It was a brilliant evening. A big thank you to all the Thomson Gold reps there were fantastic, always ready to help and lend a hand or a suggestion. The deserve a gold medal. We have always said that we would never go to the same place twice but guess what, we are going to the same Hotel next year - it was just brilliant.
Hard to fault
It's really hard to find fault with this hotel - everything was as promised. The hotel manager was fairly high profile - continuously monitoring the service beng provided. The restaurant deserves high praise. Special diets were well catered for and, as a vegetarian, I was very well provided for. My meat-eating husband gave it 10 out of 10 on the fish and meat dishes. The setting is magnificant by the towering cliffs that give the resort its name. The hotel was blockbooked for Thomson Gold bookings, so no kids and totally British clientele. The service by Thomson resort staff was good. All customer service staff spoke good English so you'll be frustrated if you want to practise your spanish. The hotel entertainment was all arranged by Thomson. It was all very professional, whether its to your taste is another matter! However there was variation and the resident duo "Cocktail" (aka Sally and Vince) were very good once you got used to their spanish style. If you had to find some fault with the hotel, you'd say it was a bit fuddy-duddy - but that's down to the middle-aged and older British clientele not the hotel itself and the bonus is that it's quiet. All in all I would say that the hotel is exceptionally good value for money The resort is small and you can comprehensively explore it in one evening but is charming compared to the rest of the south coast development. V.British - cafes offering Grimsby fish and chips and full English breakfasts but I don't think you can get away from that sort of thing in the resorts. I think the Los Gigantes Hotel is the only hotel - everything else seemed to be apartment developments. The church in the square had ecumenical english language services (provided by the Anglican diocese of South Tenerife) twice a week - Thursday mornings and Sunday evenings. As well as the fellowship, it's a chance to pick the brains of some of the expat residents on what the guide book doesn't tell you. The island is small and fascinating and well worth exploring - you'll go stir crazy if you stay in the resort. Predictably food and drink is much cheaper as you move away form the south coast. The 25 mile stretch of water between Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the world's top whale and dolphin watching areas - definetly worth splashing out on a boat trip. Either on one of the boats operating out of Los Gifantes harbour or on the Thomson excursion on the "Freebird" catamaran. A visit (or two or three) to Mount Teide is an absolute must - it's remarkable. We went on a couple of the coach tours arranged via Thomson Holidays - although expensive compared to hiring a car, the guide was excellent and it was worth the investment. Cheaper tours were available from other operators in the resort but have no feedback about them. Car hire is cheap although bus travel is an alternative - we were told that the buses were good and reliable. Much of the driving to get to the more interesting places is on hairpin mountain roads so you need to keep your nerve. Tips: Ordinary cafe con leche was like dishwater, wherever we went on the island. The only milk used seemed to be sterilised and tasted odd (compared to what we are used to) which didn't help. If you like coffee, order a cafe cortado - it's expresso with a little milk, usually served in a glass, and is much better. We had a sea view room as the brochure said that rooms facing the resort could be disturbed by the bars at night. However our room also faced over the pool area where the hotel entertainment went on until 11.30 pm or later. If this would be a problem for you, try and get a sea view room facing over the gardens, not the pool, and you should be ok. July is low season and to be honest I don't think that the noise from local bars would have been a problem - other guests on that side had no problems.
Fantastic but quite hotel and resort
Great food, well looked after hotel. Certainly not 18-30's style holiday, great for relaxing by the pools. be prepared to travel for the nightlife.
Fabulous Hotel
Just returned from a perfect stay in Hotel Los Gigantes. The ocean view double room was larger than a normal hotel room and it had a sofa and fridge aswell as a huge bed. The TV had 5 english channels aswell as Sky Sports and also a free Sky movies channel if you need your TV fix. The double size wardrobe was situated in an entrance/hallway rather than part of the bedroom area which added to spacious feel to the room. Evidently there are twin rooms, double bed, large bed rooms and garden rooms. We had a view of the ocean whereas the other side got a view of the resort and the striking cliffs. The food could be taken buffet style or you can request waiter service. We have had this type of buffet before but the quality/variety was superb. I even ventured to have a glass of free champers with my breakfast one morning - such was the standard. Everyone was greeted warmly on entering the restaurant before being seated and also the Director of the hotel was very much in attendance. This hotel is children free and promotes a couples atmosphere. We are early 50's but there were younger people there but on the whole a large percentage were older than ourselves. I will say that however old they were they sure knew how to enjoy themselves! There was all sorts of activities throughout the day plus a nightly entertainment programme. The resort is mainly an apartment/villa type NOT like Playa Americas/Cristianos type as it is a fishing port/harbour set up - very pretty but has plenty restaurants/bars. Would not hesitate to return.
Best sun holiday ever!!
We stayed in the Hotel Los Gigantes in July 2004 and must say it was our favourite destination for a sunny holiday. The hotel itself was outstanding in every respect - but it was the staff who made the holidat special. After a week they knew you name and small details like dirnks and seating preferences. The Thomson reps were also worthy of praise - always on hand with good information and tips, and the range of trips was superb. The Los Gigantes village is idyllic - ideal for those who detest loud theme bars and louts. We've just booked our return trip for this year. Highly recommonded!
Excellent return every year
I was concerned when I saw some of the reviews about this hotel, in particular the one from Merseyside who obviously thought Blackpool was a better option! all I can say is that this lovely quiet resort and excellent hotel is a must, particularly if you like a high standard and breath taking views. I have visited this hotel for Christmas and the New Year for the last eight years and I am about to make it nine! The staff, food and location are all superb, just make sure you get a sea view as the rear of the hotel looks onto the mountain. I have made many friends who return year after year and Christmas and the New Year becomes a party for all...excellent. I also have friends who continue to go back there every year. The only negative for this hotel is the entertainment, it is time they changed 'Blackjack' and the resort is quite hilly so be prepared. The bedrooms are nice and big but the bathrooms could do with refurbishment which I understand is now being carried out.
what a dump
What a Dump. This hotel is certainly a 4* Nursing Home with a Pool. You must like tin food to eat here because thats all they served. Waiter service at the pool side was non existance. Entertainment was very very poor it made you feel like jumping off the cliff. not that you didn't feel like doing that anyway. We would not recomend this hotel or holiday to anyone under 70. It certainly was not a 4* hotel.all they seemed interested in was ripping you off.
A most English resort and Hotel!
Hotel very clean and staff very friendly. Food was good and hot but at times when it was busy had to wait around for them to re-fill/replace food. Recommend sea view. Hotel entertainment most nights extremely poor. It was the most English resort we have ever been too. All bars near the hotel run by English people although there are some locals around the marina area. If you want to crash out for a week and not bothered about culture then it'll be fine for you otherwise try somewhere else.
