Just returned from a a week with a small group of friends and although we had a fabulous holiday I can only say that this place left me extremely disappointed.
I have stayed at RIU Vistamar Gran Canaria and RIU Cancun Mexico in the last two years so I thought I knew what to expect from the RIU group. In fact I persuaded my friends to pay a little bit extra to stay at a RIU as I was so impressed by the ones I had stayed at before. Unfortunately this is a Hotel that has been taken over by the RIU group and it shows.
Building itself is lovely, spacious, clean and impressive. Pool areas great, no issues with sunbeds, and staff are unbelievable friendly and helpful all over.
Entertainment team try their best and do a good job of running the usual poolside and daytime stuff. Evening is a bit hit and miss, starting at 21:15 there is a 'show' of some description which is typical holiday stuff some Ok some not so good, but I dont really expect to much or go for this!
BUT......
Rooms although lovely spacious and very clean are extremely sparsely furnished. Hardly any storage areas and a bit of a strange layout.
Food was very average. The restaurant is more like a canteen and very noisy. If you are late, you can go into the 'overspill bit' which claims to have the same food but it isnt quite the same and its not well looked after or restocked. You wont go hungry there is something for everybody but its more or less the same every meal - some kind of meat, (usually pork) fish or chicken pieces just grilled and laid out with lots of different accompaniments and a huge salad bar. By day 5 I was so bored of it I wanted to eat out which I did!
Although I am not that into entertainment usually provided its nice to have a nice main area - this hotel offres a Salon Bar which is like a dungeon hidden away under one of the accomodation blocks. Its not the most endearing of places and you wouldnt hang around after the show - unlike the large impressive areas in some hotels.
No disco or anything and ALL bars close at midnight so dont expect anything later than this.
The resort is an absolute joke. Its the typical stereotypical 'building site' views. To walk to the 'strip' which consists a couple of dodgy shops and a few bars takes 10 mins. You can walk from the back of the hotel along a path and
the coast and its quite nice OR you walk out the front of the hotel and along the road past two building sites and what appears to be a mini effluent plant (it stinks).
So within the hotel its picture postcard views but outside its not nice at all. We hired a car and got out and about a bit so unless you are happy to stay by the pool for a week its very remote!
So in summary RIU service and cleanliness completely, lovely building and great pools with gorgeous views inside the hotel, BUT very average repetitive food, sparsly furnished rooms and a dead and frankly horrible resort with buildng site views.
In my opinion not to standards experienced at other RIU hotels so will not return or reccomend to anybody.

Myself and partner stayed in this hotel for a week in july 2007. The hotel itself was lovely very clean and room was serviced everyday and all towels were changed every day. The staff were pleasant and the bus service into las america was good. The only thing that could have been better was the food was just ok some people way find it good but i am very fussy. Think i would definately go back and would recommend this hotel.

  • Holiday Date:Jul 2007
  • Advice: a bit far away from las america and not much night life
  • Activities: only went to resturants in las americas as not very many there

My wife and i have just returned from a 14 night stay at the Dunas Paraisio. Whilst we had stayed at this hotel in the past we were a little wary due to some of the comments made on this site be guests who had stayed at the hotel after our last visit.
We need'nt have worried. The standard had not dropped.
As it was just to 2 of us we booked a studio. The room was big with ample space. The maids cleaned the room daily with clean bed linen every 3 days.
The pool area is great and managed closely which meant that those who tried to hog sun beds whilst they went out for a part of the day found their towels had been removed when they returned. This resulted in ample beds for those who wanted to stay at the poolside.
The food was good and plentyfull although a little repedative. Never the less it would be impossible to go hungry.
The staff were pleasent enough if you made the effort to speak to them otherwise they got on with their job.
Overall another excellent holiday at this hotel. It won't be the last!

I have just returned from a 10 day stay at the Dunas Paraiso. Having read the reviews before leaving, I was a little worried by some of the negative comments.. I needn't have been.
I had a wonderful holiday with nothing at all to complain about. The rooms were very very spacious and clean, the beds comfy. The hotel was genuine 4 star and all the pool area was kept pristine. I took towels but did not need them as they are provided. The sun beds were plentiful and the no reserve policy was great. You couldn't put your towels on the beds and leave them while you nipped out for a half day . If you did your towels would be at reception on your return. That's great for people who really wish to use the beds there and then. The food was very varied and good quality. Yes as reported it was not as hot as I would like , but there were microwaves if required. It didn't stop me at all from enjoying my food, it was fantastic.
The night life was limited but after a full day round the pool I didn't really want to club it. I found my own activities playing cards and drinking with new found friends.
Lots of Spanish holiday makers , but they were very polite and the children so well behaved, so no problem at all.The staff were as nice as you were to them, so if you are happy so are they.
I will definitely go back and next time take less clothes and no towels.
The best rooms overlook the pool area and have big balconies with 2 sun beds and table and chairs. I got a mountain view as I was a late break. Not quite as good but still no complaints as I don't spend so much time in the room anyway. The shower was tremendous and there was 2 toilets and a separate sitting room.
If forced to add one negative comment it would only be the outside toilets. By mid day they were a bit smelly and not all in use so I had to queue some times. This of course is the fault of people using the floor as a toilet rather than the bowl !!! I would have liked to see them re washed at mid day ready for the afternoon. So just keep your shoes on if you go to the loo....
The upstairs shops were very reasonable on the prices. The little town just up the road was great for pressies and the odd night out.
I didn't use the free bus to town as I was so happy staying by the pool.
All in all I had a fantastic time ......

we went for this all inclusive...

we went for this all inclusive holiday as it promised what we were looking for. lots of entertainment for myself and my wife and my three children.
the problem started when our thomas cook rep at the hotel gave us no time and attention. she was either too busy or said she has done the best she could. but we seem to get the results if we went straight to member of staff.
before we departed, i had to phone thomas cook regional office in tenerife to check what time we were picked up as there was no information displayed.
hotel is clean and rooms very big and clean. pool was cleaned everyday and floors cleaned. new linen and towels were provided daily.
food was very good although after few days you just get fed up of eating the same food. after the first 4 days, we felt we were in a camp wherby you had to do the same things and eat the same food every time.
soft drinks and beers did not taste properly, all watered down. 50% of the time the juice machine in the morning never worked or too concentrated.
the bread served could be used as weapons when you need one. (too hard).
we booked this holiday with our kids in mind. the hotel run a kids club which was a shamble. mini club was dirty, and if it was in england could be closed due to health and safety issues. fixtures on the wall, like bascket ball ring hanging by a thread. could fall at antime. there was 15 sometimes 17 kids to one child minder. most things were done in spanish.
kids were just allowed to enter and leave the kids club without supervision.
sun loungers were gold dust an there was never enough
staff were very helpfull at times. but can i stress that priority is given to spanish guest, who seem to have loungers and parasols when there was none.
the locals also can use the dining hall at anytime of the day.
my boy had sun stroke one day and did not eat at all. he felt better at about midnight. i sent my daughter to ask for some food for him. the interogation was beyoun belief. we were eventually given some food after receiption was contacted. but the spanish people and kids were going in and taking what they liked from the dining hall.
overall, if you are thinking of taking a holiday with you partner, i will recomend this hotel as it provides this for you. but if you are taking your children expecting good entertainment, pls think twice.

Aug 2008, Ms Z Enefer

I read lots of terrible reviews about this hotel, and i hoped it wouldnt be like them. However, it really is.............
The Good
Food - Not bad at all. Always something on to eat. Excellent choices of meat and fish and the salad bar is good. Bread usually hard though which is irritating i have to say. The resturant has been previouslly described as a school canteen and i have to admit it is really noisy. The chinese and Italian was ok and the staff were really nice there, unlike the canteen!
Hotel - Clean and the maids clean and make your beds every day which was lovely. The hotel and pool generally clean and the pool is cleaned every evening once it is closed.
The Bad
The canteen - staff are ignorant and unless you are Spanish you can forget them being nice to you. if there are 4 of you and you try to sit at a table for 2 you will be moved on to another table for 4. Yet if you are Spanish they start to move chairs around!!!
Security guards literally chased after my son (who was accused of rocking the crisp machine) and FROG marched him through th hotel to reception because he said he couldnt speak English) which is obviously could! And man handled him!!! I did however get an apology for this after saying i was going to call the police and bring assualt charges on him! Yet Spanish guests can do what they like..... and you got it, rock the machine........
The Entertainment
Iv had more fun painting my nails. It was the biggest load of rubbish i have ever come across. The acts are terrible the only good thing was Mr and Mrs Dunas as my older kids got up. And Tuesday night with the middle aged couple dancing around the stage doing the tango was somthing else. People walked out in droves - including me...
The Sun Bed Situation
Oh my god. The Spanish guests must know "a man". By a man i mean the (i know where the sunbeds are stored man)
You cant get a bed for love or money. YET Spanish guests simply appear with them above their heads... I heard that one guest actually slapped another in the face over a sun bed, so you can see what your up against. If i wasnt still here im sure id be laughing!!
Overall........
Lovely clean hotel that serves nice food and the beer is not bad at all... It is out of the way and taxis do start to get expensive when you are going to las americas and back twice a day.
If you want to relax then this is the place.
But if you want entertainment and to not feel like your an ENGLISH tourists then forget it. If this was the last hotel on earth i wouldnt return. I cant get off this Island fast enough i can tell ya!!!!

Just arrived back after spending 10 days at the hotel and have to say that I was very very happy as was the rest of the family. With grandparents, parents and children to please they certainly did. Prior to going we were worried as building work was threatened but did not affect at all. Yes big cranes outside but no work was being done ( rumours of someone running off with the money). The room was extremely clean and was big, 2 toilets for 3 of us in the room was a luxury. The food was good, no complaints really except watch the chicken on the bone if they serve it in quarters as a bit pink one night. Breakfast was good, dinner was good and so was tea. Did not go to the chinese as did hear that it was the same as in eth main part. drinks on the whole were good, though at times a bit watery in the main room but plentiful and cold. Yes in paper cups but sorry would sooner that with children than accidents. The pools were very good and amazingl clean. Issues when we came to leave regarding putting towels on the sunbeds as were saying you could not reserve them but could always get a bed as their were lots. Take advantage of the free bus in Las americas if you need to go shoppingas only a few shops 15 min walk away and no beach. worth getting a taxi about 10 euros to the market on a Thursday or Saturday as can get some bargains. I would totally advise people to go if you want a quiet break that is of a very good standard.

Jun 2008, Mrs J Puttock

1 reader found this review helpful

We stayed here for a week over the end of May beginning of June and have no major complaints. The room was nice and big with a seperate lounge and even a second loo and a large balcony with table, chairs and 2 sun loungers. It was clean and well equipped although I did expect a fridge which we didn't get.
The room was at the back of the hotel with a "mountain view" which actually turned out to be a building site view over the new hotel/appartment block going up at the back of the building. That said there didn't seem to be much building going on whilst we were there and we were never bothered by any noise - although I didn't much fancy lounging on the balcony! My advice at the moment would be to try and get a sea view or pool view room if possible.
The hotel itself was large, clean and very well maintained. There are 2 huge pools (1 heated very slightly and 1 not) both with spa pools, a well equipped gym and a sauna. There is a selection of small shops including a beauty salon in the main reception area.
There were a huge number of sun loungers available by the pools although we did struggle to get anything like a decent spot over the weekend as large numbers of spanish guests arrived just for the weekend. The pool area is not open until 9AM so noone was allowed to "reserve" a sun lounger before that point anyway - it did lead to some interesting queueing on the saturady/sunday mornings though! The rest of the week was absolutely fine and we had no problems at all. If you're planning on doing excursions the weekend may be the best time to go.
There are 2 on site restaurants - the main restaurant and then a free, but bookable, speciality restaurant which is right down overlooking the sea and which serves Chinese or Italian food from a buffet. The food in both is best described as ok. It was generally, but not always, hot and there was an adequate variation of dishes from day to day.
Drinks were free all day every day from the restaurant and the poolside bar. This included self service sodas (pepsi, 7up etc), water, juice and tea and coffee and bar served local beer (San Miguel) and spirits. My husband had no issues at all drinking his beer out of plastic cups - so long as it was old he was happy. There were 2 other bars available and both charged for the drinks - 1 was a cocktail bar and the other the bar in the onsite disco. In all honesty we didn't go anywhere near the disco so we had no issues with that - I can understand why previous reviewers may have had a problem with having to leave the disco to go and get drinks from the free bar instead...
Overall we had an excellent time. The hotel is very child orientated and offers lots of activities for them as well as for the adults and I have no problem recommending it.

Gorgeous looking hotel, but it IS in the middle of nowhere!! Don't be decieved by it being next to the sea, as that does NOT mean next to a beach (as we sadly discovered once it was too late)!! They are starting to build one but it seems it'll take 4ever, progress is V slow. Gorgeous watching the sunset over la gomera (the island next to tenerife), excellent views of it on a clear day!! There is a free bus leaves at 10/11/12am to las americas, returning to hotel at 4/5/6pm. But it is a 20 min journey and unless u spend 15 euros to get back at lunch it means u have to eat out, which is useless for ppl on a tight budget. The food was hugely varied, ie fish, steak, pizza, tuna, salad, soup, lots of lovely cakes, pastrys, ice-cream, angel delight and fruit, lots of fresh bread. But it is generally the same stuff in rotation. It was amazing the 1st wk but im a fussy eater so I was fed up by the time I was going home. The kids entertainers didn't seem to speak english and there was mostly german guests in the hotel, which means if ur not there at 8am to grab a sunbed, u wont see one for the rest of the day!!
All in all this is a place for going away to spend most of ur time round the pool or chilling at the hotel. Otherwise go to playa de las americas or los christianos, cuz you will either get bored, or spend a fortune on travelling back and fore to playa paraiso.

Having stayed at the hotel last year...
5 / 10
Apr 2008, Mrs JM Brown

Having stayed at the hotel last year without complaint I was very disappointed to return this year to find that the standards had certainly dropped.
The room was very good with plenty of space and facilities with the sea view a bonus. Unfortuately the buffet mealtimes became a thing of dread where very bad manners were the order of the day. I realise that the hotel was very busy and the kitchen may have been stretched but a little more menu imagination would have been appreciated, particularly with deserts.
Last year we were shown to our table and had to comply with a dress code at the evening meal and the following entertainment, for adults, was varied and adequate.
Non of these applied on our recent visit.
The children's entertainment was an evening disco where children either jumped off the stage or slid along the floor.
Other than the rooms the hotel does not deserve the 4 star rating it has.
