Apr 2008, Ms D O''Brien

On arrival we were given a very confusing map. Eventually found the room which was very clean but very sparse. The room had a really really bad smell (almost like sewage) which seemed to come from the sink, but we stuck it out as we were only there for a week (I was also worried we would get a worse room!), by staying in the bedroom and avoiding the kitchen/living room. The room was cleaned everyday, but we had NO towel change. The cleaner tried to put some liquid down the sink to get rid of the smell, but this just seemed to make it worse. We also seemed to be about the only ones who were self catering so we paid for all drinks etc, but never dined in the hotel. There was one local bar which we ate in every night, except one, when we ventured on down the road a bit and found a truely awful chinese restaurant. The entertainment was woeful! It was so bad I found it funny. They tried to have a quiz one night and did not even know some of the answers to the questions they gave out! There seemed to be alot of elderly guests and alot of french guests and even more elderly french guests!! The hotel also had tenants and the tenants had dogs which were very noisy due to the paper thin walls!! The staff were pleasant and courteous, and the entertainment staff did try their best to get everyone involved with activities, no matter how few were interested. My only regret was that we didnt go all inclusive like everyone else seemed to be, because then we would have had no need to venture out. There are no gift shops, only a couple of supermarkets. We had to rent a kettle for 10 euro, but when I returned when I was checking out, I got my money back which was a lovely surprise! We had a washing machine and microwave in our room, and we did not use either of them! On the whole, the place was nice and quiet, and very very clean. The neighbours dogs at times were a bit much, but the tenants themselves were polite enough and the staff were always pleasant. I would not go back to this hotel, but our week there was only a last minute decision for Easter, so beggars can't be choosers I guess!

karl and denise from the wirral.
just having come back from thr don pedro, we found the hotel to be ok, dont get me wrong its far from perfect, but its clean ,the rooms are clean but very basic and had clean towels and cleaned every day. the food was fine and staff in the restaurant are very friendly. the entertainment was poor and mainly for the french. the bar was terrible, most of the time there was only one member of staff on serving food [which was terrible as bar snacks], and serving drinks. so needless to say you wait along time for your drinks. you also get your drinks in small plastic cups with lots of ice and 3/4 full, whilst the paying self catering guests get drinks in full size glasses!. round the pool was nice and clean, and plenty of sun loungers. we wouldnt rush back although we enjoyed our stay.

Mar 2008, Mrs C Ellerton

We deliberately booked this hotel and resort in Costa del Silencio because we did not want the usual British Tenerife experience of 'just like home' food, alcohol and loud entertainment. We were a little disappointed in the standard of the accommodation as it looked a little 'tired', however, as we were there for just a week, it was not a problem. The clientele were predominantly French and Spanish as were the hotel assistants who organised the entertainment. If you were prepared to join in and spread the 'entente cordiale' there was much to be gained. We played (and lost) Scrabble against a Finnish gentleman and joined in games of Trivial Pursuit played in French and English.
The buffet style restaurant was more than adequate catering for all dietary requirements and sold wine by the carafe for a mere 3.2 euros. Las Galletas is a small fishing village about a 10-15 minute walk away and is worth visiting first thing in the morning to watch the fishermen bring in their catch and sell it on the harbourside. Buses to Los Christianos and Las Americas are frequent and inexpensive.
This is a quiet resort, ideal for anyone who wants to take it easy and not be assaulted by time-share/holiday club touts or street sellers which are the scourge of the major resorts on this island. The english guests who arrived on the Gatwick flight for an all-inclusive holiday at this resort, were clearly disappointed from the outset and they should have really checked their package before leaving England.

Palia Don Pedro was really the...

Jan 2008, Ms S Bennett

Palia Don Pedro was really the holiday from hell for us; we arrived on 25th Dec 2007 in the early evening to be greeted by a pleasant man on reception who gave us our key to our room and a map on how to get there.
We got in to our room which at first glance looked ok, being that the restaurant didn't open till 7.30pm we went for a walk, we passed about 4 pubs and some shops that were closed but being that it was the evening and Christmas day that was the reason so we thought. We met up with our friends who were there and walked back to go and get some food as the children were hungry. When we entered the dinner hall it looked ok, sat at our table then went for something to eat well that's another story a menu that was horrible, the children didn't eat much at all we were all so tired that we went to our room and hoped that the morning would be better.
Breakfast was a bit better but as time went on it was chips with every meal, salad for lunch and evening meal, the meat was horrible and they really didn’t think about children putting rabbit on the menu, scrambled egg which was swimming in water and was black, bacon full of fat, tried to get the children to eat cereal but the milk tasted funny. We went the next day a bought some extras so we could have a cup of tea but the hob would not work and there was no kettle.
We had no hot water for a week went and complained sent the maintenance man round who didn't speak English but managed to work out that he said lukewarm water was fine. Our friends in another block were moved due to no hot water, another friend had to have our children round to bath.
The life guard that I believe someone said was there the whole time watching the pool was there 3 days out of our week.
We went to Los Cristianos two nights to get away as all we really wanted to do was come home, that cost us loads of money to get back as the taxi driver didn't know where the hotel was on one night we told him to stop and we would find it ourselves.
No rep what so ever, the pool was supposed to be heated it was really really cold, the weather was good but I really do have to say the rest was awful.
Our friend who also was away with us was woken one morning to have cockroaches crawling over her face and across the bed she had two children with her, one was in a cot. She went and complained and was left a tin of stuff to spray the room herself. How out of order was that.
I would really say to anyone don’t even entertain going there.

I really don’t know where to start....

Apr 2007, Miss N M

I really don’t know where to start. This hotel is awful! On arriving at the hotel, my younger cousin and my 4 month old baby and I were simply given the keys and a very bad map to find our room.
We were horrified to find it was directly next to the entertainment hut. Our room was actually an apartment, but with a condemned kitchen. The gas hob didn’t work, there were no utensils and the fridge was actually warm and very dirty. The work surfaces were written on and stained all over.
The cupboards had huge insect infested holes in them and the room itself was very cold. The bathroom was surprisingly nice. Newly tiled with a power shower and comfortable bath. The bedroom was a decent size, with two very uncomfortable beds and sheets that were very dirty.
We waited until midnight for someone to bring us a cot for the baby, which was falling apart and with a terrible pink itchy blanket. After a very uncomfortable first night we were very hungry and looking forward to breakfast. But again we were extremely disappointed.
The food was absolutely terrible. It was definitely to suit the French who made up the largest proportion of the guests. It was very cold and bland, the bacon was actually mostly fat and the eggs were (when boiled) freezing cold and green. The evening meals were not any better. The area itself is very quiet, although our room was noisy due to the entertainment hut on our doorstop and two fights between the entertainment staff in the middle of the night!
There are very few restaurants nearby, the beach is around a 30 minute walk and has no sand or parasols etc!! There are some shops also around a 30 minute walk away but these tend to open late and shut early! We spent every day of our holiday getting buses into Los Christianos and Las Americas and spent a fortune eating out as we refused to eat in the hotel. The bus service was really good, and easy to get on and off with most drivers happy to help with the buggy etc!
The weather was fantastic but I would never return to this hotel, and never to that area of Tenerife. If you go, prepare for the worst as it absolutely dreadful. The only saving grace was the reception staff who did their best to help! They actually were very sympathetic to the pit of a hotel!

I believe the Palia Park hotels...
6 / 10
Jul 2006, Mr P Brady

I believe the Palia Park hotels contain exactly what it says on the tin. We opted for a cheap, all-inclusive holiday and that is what we got.
The rooms were simple, but sufficient and the catering likewise. Food and drink was available from early in the morning through till 11pm at night. The catering leaned more towards satisfying the French who made up the largest part of the hotel’s guests, but I figure if you want English cuisine with PG Tips then Bournemouth is more suitable than a group of islands off the coast of Africa!
Los Silencio had very little to offer. The beach was poor so the local area was more suited to families wanting to stay around the pool all day, or romantic couples.
I disagree with the comment about ball games as several people played with balls in the pool and they even have a volleyball net set up.
The staff at the complex were incredibly helpful to us and my only advice would be to take a kettle, spare towels and don’t expect 4 star on a 2 star holiday!

Either this hotel has changed...
8 / 10
Mar 2006, Mr GF Perryman

Either this hotel has changed enormously since these other reviews, or they have been written by the competition, or we have much lower expectations.
We have just returned from a week at Don Pedro, and found it excellent value for money.
The food was good, and varied – three or four different choices every evening, and many options for breakfast. You could eat as much as you wished. Most of the other guests were French, so the menus probably reflected that rather than catering for English – but bacon & eggs, cereals, toast, fruit juice, tea & coffee were available every day. And if you’re really desperate, there are plenty of English pubs/cafes within easy waling distance… and some excellent German and Chinese ones too.
True, the architecture was 70s cubist – but this can have its own fascination – in UK it would probably be listed! And who goes to Tenerife for the architecture anyway? Yes, the area is a bit run down, and some of the external decoration poor, but the sun shines the same wherever you stay, and there are some wonderful views of Mt Teide and the coast within a hundred yards. There was very little traffic noise, just the odd aircraft rarely passing directly over. The fact that ‘nothing happens after 10.00pm’ is for some of us a bonus!
The rooms were also part 70s and part recent upgrading. The 70s bits were very well-made and in good condition, and the upgrading to a very high standard. Because they used to be self-catering, the rooms are large, and include extras like a full size fridge, work area and a proper sink and a decent balcony. They were scrupulously clean, and maids cleaned the room and made the beds every day. No, sheets were not changed as often as we would have expected in a 4*hotel, but this is only 2*,and the costs are pro rata. And how often do we change our towels at home?
The pool is excellent – a full 25 meter oblong, with a FULL-TIME LIFEGUARD!! Lots of free sun beds and a large terrace.
No, there is no TV or radio, but we took a small radio which was quite enough. We also took a traveling kettle so we could brew up whenever we wanted to.
The entertainment was nightly, but that’s not what we went for. What we saw was very good. In the daytime, we could have played table tennis, pool, darts, rifle shooting, pistol shooting, boules, aquagym, keep fit, scrabble, etc. etc. No one need ever be bored! But it was also possible to ignore these activities and just chill in the warm sun!
The staff were always friendly and helpful. The only complaint we heard from anyone was a Frenchman who objected to having to pay for water at the evening meal. Overall, excellent value for money.

Jan 2006, Mrs C Wood

This hotel! Was a run down former apartment block which looked like an old concentration camp. It still had the old kitchens in and it was supposed to be a hotel, which had reopened on 23rd dec 2005 after being refurbished, the reception area and the restaurant had tidied up.
The rooms were falling to bits wardrobes didn’t have any doors, the patios doors had 2 inch gaps in them, the rooms were cold, there wasn’t any form of heating, but the worst thing was on the first night I woke feeling very itchy when I got up and looked my bed was covered in insects when we followed the trail they were all over the clothes in the wardrobe and the drawer of the bedside cabinet which contained underwear was covered.
Every guest that was there complained for some reason or other, three people had items stolen from their rooms, when we asked to move rooms we were told there wasn’t any, so they just sprayed the insects.
One hour later the manager came to us and said there was a burst hot water pipe outside our door and we would have to move as they needed to dig outside and lift the bathroom floor up so there had been spare rooms. The town of Silencio had a couple of pubs but everyone was having to get taxis into Los Christianos.
I have never complained about any holiday but this was the pits. My advice don’t go there.

Jan 2006, Mrs D Russell

My husband and I were sold this holiday as a 3* hotel half board, what we got was a 70s style ex-self catering complex with a canteen eating hall and not a restaurant.
The food was the same day in day out. Breakfast was bacon, eggs(very greasy)and beans all of which where luke warm, cereal with milk if you asked them to fill up the milk jug. Toast which you had to put in the toaster 3 or 4 times. Cheese slices and wafer thin ham which weren’t kept cool.
Now on to evening meal, which we got fed up with after the 3rd night. All 3 nights where Turkey or fish just done in different sauce's(which went on to be the same for the whole of the week). The only potatoes you got was frozen chips. Again all luke warm, nearly forgot so was the soup. You couldn’t have tea or coffee with your meal you had to buy beer wine or water.
Now on to the pool, kids not allowed to play ball or anything in the pool, but can go for rifle shooting instead. Pool bar didn’t open until 4 o'clock so no afternoon snacks or drinks. Outside the complex there is a few nice bar and restaurants (SOFIA) which was excellent. The whole area is run down and in need of a face lift. Our advice DONT GO.

Jan 2006, Miss A Y Canning

Staff in hotel were rude and obnoxious, not much in way of entertainment, and food was horrible, the same thing every night. Rooms were quite big and clean, although towels not changed everyday just hung up dirty towels! Costa del Silencio itself was very quiet nothing much in resort, no beach, the streets were empty and nothing open after ten pm.
We booked coach transfers but when we got there were told we had to get a taxi. Spent every day and night getting buses to Los Christianos or Playa Las Americas. Would not recommend resort or hotel! If going to Tenerife go to Cristianos or Americas.

Palia don Pedro hotel accommodation...

Jan 2006, Mr I Parker

1 reader found this review helpful

Palia don Pedro hotel accommodation is like Colditz. The apartments are so sparse. It consisted of 1 sofa 2 chairs and 2 single beds. That is it. No TV radio or anything. Yes I hear you say but you only sleep in your room anyway. Well at this time of year it is really quite cold ay night and so it wasn't always nice to walk about the small town and it would have been nice to spend an evening in and just watch telly or even for some music or something in the morning and I am by no means an ardent /TV fanatic.
I think Don Pedro should do it's home work i.e. sample competition accommodation and learn.
Also I must say the standard of food is absolutely dreadful, I am convinced the cooks are in no way qualified to cook.
I end by saying if Don Pedro hopes to get clients returning they have to drastically improve standards in all areas.
