We assumed that the standard of Barcelo's would be the same or similar in all countries! Entirely wrong assumption! The Varadero is tired and in urgent need of refurbishment. The equipment in the apartment was sadly lacking both in quality and quantity - and the cleanliness... more

Great Place
We stayed at the Barcelo Varadero for a long weekend in mid January. There were many pools but none of them were heated. It was a little too chilly to swim in them. Surprisingly, the beach was much warmer and we were able to swim in the ocean. We attributed the warmth to the black sand. At any rate, the hotel was very nice. Our room had a bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom, living room and balcony. Our daughter slept on a pull out bed located under the couch in the living room. The hotel was very family oriented. The hotel staff was OK. They are fluent in Spanish, German and English. The food was great. We chose the option to upgrade our trip from half board to all inclusive for 12 euro/ daily per person. The upgrade was definitely worth it! There is a nice pool side bar. There is small hot tub located by one of the pools but it's usually crowded. The hotel has a supermarket, launderette and playground. If you want to be very economical, you can simply grocery shop at the market and prepare your own meals in your kitchenette.
Clean, steep setting, not too touristy, playa de arena
stayed in barcello varadero from boxing day until 3rd jan 2007, area is clean, and well maintained, saying that,- the heated pool wasnt! until the day we came home. the sky tv went off, so we had no tv either, but hey! you dont go on holiday to watch tv. because it was new year they couldnt fix the main satellite, so not their problem and as soon as 2nd jan came - the pool and tv were sorted. we stayed self catering and i found the kitchen equipment very basic, i left a note of things i'd like to of seen - and the next day, the maid had bought them to us - brilliant! kettle, toaster, tea towel... 4 pools, lots of sun beds, not many english guests and i found the kids club was mainly german. but they still accomodated our 2 yr old. the resort is steep, so not ideal for pushchairs and defo not for wheelchairs, unless u dont mind short taxi rides. the restaurants were very good and varied, the neptune was excellent - but pricey. bus trip into playa de las americas is 55 minutes and cost 6 euros for 2 adults. nice walk into los gigantes, but steep and not worth it really. but we did have a lovely tapas lunch in a english run fishermans inn in gigantes. all in all -- lovely break, cost £1600 for 1 week self catering - so expensive, but thats because of time we went - i would of been dissappointed to have paid that on a normal week... any electrical items u wish to buy - psp nintendo etc - bus into playa parisaio - its much cheaper than playa arena or americas. weather was 75 degrees - just lovely with the little boy to think of. new years eve was crap - pilgrims bar promised a great night and delivered NOTHING! - absolutely NOTHING! they should be ashamed............ 8 couples walked out before 11.30 after waiting for something to happen - they had darts on tv.............!! i ask ya!?
Upgrade to all inclusive - well woth the money
We got back from Barcelo Varadero Hotel on 22nd December 2006, just in time for christmas. When we booked, we were looking for a cheap break and ideally a 4 star hotel. We booked over the internet with Thomas Cook and on a self catering basis. On arrival, we rather thought that it should have been a 3 star, as it was no different to 3 star properties we've stayed in on previous holidays. We spoke to other guests and they recommeded the food. We noticed they were doing a special upgrade to all inclusive for 22 euros each per day, so we upgraded. We ate so well, the food was really nice and it was woth the upgrade for the free drinks alone. The area is very quite at this time of year, and we stayed at the hotel every night. The entertainment is pretty poor and the bar closed very early as there was no one in. If your after a quiet, relaxing holiday, then it will suit you, if your under 20 and want to pull, then you better head for Playa Las Americas!!!
Good Hotel, but poor administration
We liked this Apart-Hotel and enjoyed our stay there after the initial problems. We had booked 2 double rooms for 4 adults, but when we arrived they said they only had one room. They were not helpful, or sympathetic and told us it was between us and Lastminute.com. After eventually contacting LastMinute, ourselves, which took a good half hour on the phone, they phoned through to the Hotel. It was the Hotel's error, and they gave us the room, right next door to the one already available! without a word of apology. The Hotel is very clean. The pools are great. The food varied, tasty and plentiful. The location is quiet, which is what we wanted, but it's only 20 minutes in a taxi, very cheap to Playa Americas & Los Christianos when you want a bit more life. There are plenty of excursions and boat trips leaving locally, and a great restaurant, (varadero) run by a very nice Austrian guy, close to the Hotel, and they do a fantastic paella. After the initial stress, we had a great holiday. It's a great hotel for families, but ring and check your booking before you leave!
Good Hotel
We had read previous reviews, so were quite confident the hotel would be OK. It is in a good position at the Southern end of Playa de la Arena and our request for a balcony with a sea view was granted. We had a terrific view across the sea to the island of La Gomera. There were some rooms, however, not as favourably positioned. It would be best to avoid ground floor rooms with a view only of the main road or the hotel interior. Hotel reception was friendly and efficient and our room was clean, spacious and well maintained throughout the stay. At the end of our stay we had the use of a courtesy room for a fairly generous half an hour, but there was no electricity, which was rather inconvenient to say the least. We cannot comment on the food as we always ate out. Unfortunately, the large hotel bar seemed to be permanently closed so, rather than use the bar near the pool in the evenings, we used bars in the resort. Our favourite restaurant was "Casa Pedro", about 20 minutes walk from the hotel. The food was always good and the views from the open air terrace part of the restaurant were terrific. The English-run Pilgrim's bar was great for its friendly staff, excellent breakfasts and live TV sports. Playa de la Arena is a pleasant, quiet resort. It is quite hilly, however, as are its sister resorts, Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, though all offer relaxing holidays with stunning scenery. It takes the best part of an hour to walk from the hotel to the marina at "Los Gigs". We visited Playa de Las Americas and Los Christianos during our stay. These were completely different and we were pleased that we had chosen Playa de la Arena. We booked a day's excursion to La Gomera and another to Mount Teide with a company called Viajes Teide. Unfortunately, the coach did not turn up for the La Gomera trip and although we were refunded in full, this did not make up for the disappointment and the early start for a 7:30 pick-up. The Teide trip was very enjoyable, but involved another early pick-up (7:40) for an unexpected journey to Los Christianos to board another coach. This was chaotic in the extreme, involving much confusion on the part of the tour guides over allocating people to the right coaches and it was probably more through luck than good management that we eventually boarded the right coach. We would recommend arranging airport transfers through "Megatone", a shop also offering excursions, broadband internet access and DVD/Video hire only 2 minutes walk from our hotel reception. Our transfer cost only €28 and was very punctual and efficient. It is an English-run shop and the people managing it were very friendly and helpful. All in all, it was a very enjoyable holiday and we would go again and not just for another shot at La Gomera!
you decide
I stayed at the varadero 2 years ago. Our first room was on the ground floor and on the first night when we were in the bar the room was broken into and all our valuables taken, The protective grid (wooden) over the window was ripped off and the window forced open. The hotel staff responded very badly to the situation and seemed genuinely put out that we wanted to call the police. Their response was terrible, slow and rude. They claimed it had never happened before but when the police arrived they told us the opposite not surprising in a hotel that has no back fence, poor security and good access to the main road. The hotel manager however was fantastic and the head office staff dealt with the problem the next day very quickly compensating us fully for our loss!!!. The hotel is in a good position on the island and i would recommend taking a car and exploring the north and the inland part of tenerife. Mount teide is beautiful and a fantastic national park. Stay clear of playa de las americas a perfect example of how us brits destroy foreign countries and give ourselves a bad name in the world. Bad experience in an otherwise good hotel group, the barcelo sants in barcelona is fantastic.
Highly Recommended & Relaxing Family Orientated Hotel
After reading loads of reviews on this hotel prior to going away i really did not know what to expect, especially as the tour operators could not decide on it being a 3 or 4 star accomodation (varies with the operator). I have been to Tenerife previously as i have the other Canary Islands many times and have stayed in several 3 & 4 star hotels and i would definately class the Varadero as a 4 star by going off the average across the Canaries. Myself and my partner just returned from our stay here for 2 weeks looking to chill out and do nothing much and thoroughly enjoyed it for many reasons like; swift & smooth check in, spotlessly clean all the time, maid service for 5 out of 7 days, help yourself all inclusive saved queues for drinks etc although other board basis are available and upgradable to all inc. Also, buffet style restaurant with huge variety and theme days e.g mexican with something for everyone(veggies, meaties, kiddies, etc), basic but clean decor and very clean and presentable amenities/complex, 4 decent clean pools(monitored 3 times daily by samples), shooting, archery, friendly people and environment, pool volleyball, waterpolo, cracking weather(90+ every day) Ooh...now the bad bits; Entertainment mainly caters for the dutch & spanish but some english themes, although english understood it is not greatly spoken( but then you are in another country...right), Resort area is quiet with not to much going on (although several shops & supermarkets etc are there and los gigantes only a 20 min walk or 3euros in a cab and 2.50 euros on the bus), Beaches are Black...yuck (very clean though and just as much fun). If you miss a meal or just fancy a change then try Pilrims Diner, it is run by 2 great & friendly cockneys(1 called Sean), prices are great, food & drink is fab(superb big English breakfast) and they show every conceivable sports fixture from England on multiple screens. All in all i would recommend this hotel and resort to anybody unless you want nightclubs and none stop noise. Excellent quality & value, will be going back soon. Mike & Marie Manchester.
Family orientated hotel
Hotel situated 40 minutes from airport (Taxi 45 euros), not close to any main amentities of Teneriefe. Suited to families with young children, good daytime kids activities with mini-disco starting at 2030 hrs-2200. Final hour 2200-2300 entertainment also aimed at young audience carried out mainly by hotel staff with occasional guest shows, Knife throwing-dancing & parrot show! beware having your photo taken with a parrot 10 euros! Rooms clean but small for a family of 4, food excellent we were all inclusive. You will need your alarm clock with you to obtain a sun-bed! Would we go back? maybe but would definetly hire a car however kids getting a bit old for activities at 10 & 7.
all inclusive
I've just been on holidays in this hotel: 1 week, all inclusive, booked on internet with first choice. My overall impression is a bit disappointed but it was not so bad! This hotel is supposed to be 4 stars (tour operator rating). I would say it more 2-3 stars. It's not luxurious but very comfortable and clean. We had an appartement with 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 kitchenette/lounge and a balcony. We were in bloc C, 4th floor: the view was really nice, on the sea side. But on the other side, it was a view on private property, a bit noisy with a road, building works, and a dog barking most of the time (even during the night, very annoying). The food was OK, but nothing exceptional. For sure, you're never hungry as you have food (and drinks) available all day. But there wasn't a big choice. Don't expect any good entertainment in the hotel. The swimming-pools were very nice but so cold that I couldn't have a swim without being blue after 5 min! You have some aquagym in the morning but that's it for all the day, no water-polo, volley ball or whatever organised. You can play pool and table tennis (1 table for the whole hotel). The evening entertainment was really poor and aiming for children. The black sandy beaches are quite unusual but very rare on the cost. The closest is something like 15 min walking, no shadow so be carefull with the sun, and the water temperature is worst than in the pool (I tried once but I was like violet in 3 min). No watersport organised around, even if you find on the website of the hotel that you have acces to watersport. And don't count on the public transport as we rarely saw buses running. So there is nothing really to do, unless you're rich and can spend plenty of money on excursions. Our tour operator was Thomas cook and I'm really disappointed by their poor organisation. The only thing they do for you is to sell you some very expensive excursions. example: 50 euros the excursion for an leasure park. If you go out of the hotel, you will find easily plenty of shop organising excursions for much cheaper (30 euros the same excursion). We rented a car on day to go up to the volcano. It was very nice. Then we went around the island, on the south side and we were disappointed as we didn't find 1 nice beach to stop and have pic-nic. The north of the island may be nicer. So to sumarize, the hotel is nice but not for young couples. It's perfect if you have a familly and just want to relax for a few days. Otherwise, you get bored easily.
Excellent Hotel
My daughter and I have just spent a week here and really enjoyed it. The apartments were excellent and spotless. Cleaned every day, towels and bed linen changed frequently.Plenty of Sun beds and bathing areas tidied and cleaned every day. Four pools to choose from all clean, two salt water. As we chose to eat out or self cater can't speak for food but didn't hear any complaints. Good entertainment each evening and all quiet by 11.30 at latest. Plenty of good restaurants in area recommend try Sunflower just a few mins.walk away and for the best breakfast in Tenerife the Pilgrim's Bar about five/ten mins.walk away. Open all day for breakfast and meals and different evening menu. All the staff are friendly and helpful, a great team. We were a bit confused before we went by some previous reports on this Hotel but we really couldn't fault it. Playa de la Arena is a fairly quiet resort and quite hilly but frequent bus services to other resorts and plenty of excursions if you do want to go further afield.
