Basically, disappointing
6 / 10
Dec 2008, lisa warne

Just returned from a week here with my partner, the weather was not great, but then it was November, and would agree with some reviews.
The rooms were clean and comfortable, with maid service daily, if we wanted her to return to clean later, she was only too happy to do so. Provided clean towels daily and the room was cleaned to a high standard.
As for cockroaches, maybe fewer because it wasn't so hot, but only saw one outside the entertainment room in the evening and one on our balcony, but isn't that to be expected in Tenerife??
Our main disappointment was the food. Basic, bland and repetitive, clearly the chef had little imagination. Even a previous trip to Butlins put this catering to shame (well done Butlins!)
The issue with reserving a sunbed was not a problem for us, again the time of year probably was the reason, there was always a life guard at each pool, although only a very few brave holidaymakers were swimming as the water was ridiculously freezing. And the Jacuzzi was bearly warm either, with only one jet working.
There was plenty of entertainment daily (adults and children) and in the evening, although you did have to get to the evening entertainment early to ensure you got a seat. By the end of the evening, the music was extremely loud til late and although our room wasn't particularly close to it, if you wanted to sleep before 1am, it was a problem. If you were closer and had children, this would be a real pain.
One main positive was the attitude of all staff, on reception, maids, security, restaurant staff - all extremely pleasant, helpful and all English speaking.
We enjoyed a fantastic Freebird trip on a catamaran to view whales and dolphins (can't guarantee seeing either but we did see many whales close up and had plenty of time to take photos) and time to swim in the sea. There was plenty of space in the boat (been on ones before where if you move you can't get your seat back) again, this was possibly due to the time of year. Lunch of a roll and as much drink (beer, wine or soft drinks) as you wanted was included in the price (booked through our Thomas Cook rep). Do be careful not to leave anything on the coach that takes you to the trip as we returned on a different one and ensure you get back to the coach quickly as they are not keen to hang around and wait for you, (we were unescorted back to the hotel and 3 passengers were left behind on our trip). (This was not the fault of Thomas Cook)
Would return to Tenerife but not this hotel.

  • Advice: Very hilly, not much within easy walking distance, not ideal for elder travellers or young children
  • Activities: Well worth walking into Los Gigantes for shops and views

Have just this week returned from the Tamaimo Tropical, and have to tell you... I had the time of my life. I would consider my self well travelled having been to in excess of 30 countries and loved Tenerife.
My partner and I were 'Hurricane Ike Refugees' supposed to go to Cuba, and we were 2 of many shipped out to Tenerife as an alternative. I give Thomas Cook 10/10 for the way in which they dealt with the crisis by the way.
Hotel was great, pools got 10/10. Dont understand all the 'Spanish preference' moans, Jorge and Nelson certainly made us feels like we were the most important people there. Maybe those who complain should look at themselves.
**The ice creams are FREE.
**Cockroaches are a part of life, I cant believe people make an issue of it.
**We never had trouble finding outstanding beaches (2 in walking distance and one a Euro 3.00 cab ride away).
**We were a group of 5, never had to wait or queue for a sunbed. Cant understand why you would waste your time queuing anyway. If it bothers that much, dont go to Spain in peak season. Thank goodness there were no Germans, then there would be something to complain about!!!
24 hour reception, manned by polite people only too happy to help, Bob our holiday rep was fab, always available. Cheap to cab around local vicinity. Good, reliable local bus.
Not impressed by Freebird. Have done lots of boat trips in the past in different destinations, and certainly felt ripped off. Pop down to the port at Los Gigantes and book a local excursion.
Tamaimo only dropped one point for me and that was for food. Good quality (snacks excluded), lots and lots of it, just the same thing every day. By day 6-7 was were eating out. Lots of great little places to eat in Puerto Santiago, including a pizzeria who does takeaway for those who complained about the lack of pizza's.
Nicky, Gary, Shanz, Ross, Daisy, Matt and Jim, thanks for the awesome time!!! xx

My girlfriend and I have just...
9 / 10
Sep 2008, Mr A Gray

My girlfriend and I have just returned from our holiday in Tenerife and I can honestly say that this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in!
Our holiday got off to a terrible start when we arrived at Gatwick to be told that our airline (Futura) had gone out of business and Thomas Cook should have called us to let us know our flight had been changed to 3 hours earlier (which had just left) and now our only option was to rush to Stansted and hope we were there in time for a different flight... To cut a long story short we got there just in time but had to leave our bags behind which arrived 3 days later. We finally arrvied at 8 in the morning and were planning to sleep but in the end we just wanted to get out in the sun.
So the hotel... The reviews below just go to prove one thing to me, that some people will always find something to moan about! We dropped off other people at 3 hotels on the way and ours looked so much nicer. The reception staff checked us in in minutes, gave us our AI armbands and we went up to our room. We were on the top (4th) floor and had an amazing view out over the Atlantic ocean. The room was all we could have asked for, tidy, comfy clean beds, clean towels, a tv with some english speaking chanels, a safe, a kettle, fridge... Everything was fine, it wasn't the Hilton but all the important things were there and everything was clean and tidy.
The view from the front door of our room was almost as good as from the balcony. We had the huge Los Gigantes cliffs in the back ground and the pool in the fore...
The pool... This was without doubt the best pool/pool area I have ever spent my holiday in. You have 2 main options for pools and we went for the big one. The bridge across the middle was really nice but the whole area was landscaped so well that it just made you not want to go out! All the drinks we could have wanted were included: beer (San Miguel), bottled water, fruit juices and Coke etc. We did always grab a sunbed early as there was a bit of a space resticrtion due to the size of the pool and number of palm trees etc but we got one in the sun, next to the pool every day. We did go mid Sept so I can't say if there would be a shortage of beds in peak season.
The weather was great apart from the last day when the heavens opened... I would recomend mid Sept to visit here because it's lovely and hot without being unbearable.
The food... Again you won't please everyone but I was really impressed.
Breakfast - Same every day but everything you could ask for... The only thing I would have changed is the bacon which is very fatty and the beans because I am a Heinz snob! Lots of cereals/yoghurts/fruit etc so something for everyone.
Lunches and Dinners - There was variety but usually something along the same lines... A fish dish, a pork dish, several types of potatoes, soup, pasta, ice cream, jelly.
My girlfriend is a vegeterian and we ate out only once as a treat but even if you ate out every evening you would still be paying less than going somewhere self catering or half board.
The staff were all friendly and were happy to try and help with anything... However, I recomend getting the safe (€23) as a guy we made friends with out there had €20 go missing from his room after the cleaner had been in.
The area was fantastic! Again perfect for what my girlfriend and I were after. There is a supermarket litterally over the road from the reception which sells everything you would need. The cliffs really are impressive. You are a 15/20 min walk from the marina. If your a beach lover this probably isn't the place for you as the small black sand one near to the hotel didn't look very nice... However when you see the pool I'd be surprised if you were dissappointed about not going to the beach!
If you want a day out I'd suggest the Flipper Uno boat trip. We saw dolphins and whales and got to swim in the ocean by the cliffs. The staff were really good and when we got down to the marina and saw the other boats we were glad we chose this one!
In summary this really was a fantastic place for a holiday and I am certain we will go there again as we both loved it... My only last bit of advise though would be not to get any holiday with Thomas Cook as we feel really let down by them with regards to our flights and bags... We didn't let them ruin our holiday though!

Well i was plesantly suprised intially,Our room was very clean and comfortable, the reception staff was extremley curtious and friendly they looked very smart and could,nt enough for you.The restrant was nice too,Plenty of choice and anyone who was hungry i would have said thats their own fault! Then we come to the swimming pools!! Two lovely pools with life guards everyday the only problem was that they spent quite abit of time talking to people and not really watching we did hear a couple of days prior to us arriving a child drowned their!!!However i cannot comment on this as we dont know the details. THE OTHER ISSUE IS SUNBEDS CERTAINLY THEIR ARE NOT ENOUGH FOR THE AMOUNT OF GUESTS AT THE HOTEL. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT NEEDS DEALING WITH. THE OTHER ISSUE WHICH I WOULD SAY IS OF A SERIOUS NATURE IS HEALTH AND SAFTEY, WHEN WE WERE THEIR QUITE ALOT OF PEOPLE HAD SLIPPED AND HURT THEM SELVES, ONE LADY WHO I PICKED UP FROM THE FLOOR HAD A BROKEN FOOT AND NEEDED HOSPITAL TEATMENT.LOTS OF LOOSE RUGS ON CORRIDORS . NO WET FLOOR SIGNS OR ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE.WHILST I REALISE STANDARDS ARE NOT LIKE THE ONES IN THE UK. THIS NEEDS ADDRESSING

Aug 2008, Miss S Douglas

Overall i had a brilliant holiday but not because of this hotel! The food was bland and short of options and similar each day. 85% of the staff were rude, the maids do hardly any cleaning. Two out of the seven days we were left with no towels or toilet roll and had to go down to reception to get them. The tiled floors in the rooms were unclean and the bathroom wasn't the cleanest either. The all inclusive drinks were good though - san miguel lager, vodka made by smirnoff and the soft drinks were coca cola, fanta and sprite. The pools in the hotel were cleaned every morning and in very good condition, spent most of my holiday in them! There is a hassel getting sunbeds in the morning though! The main problem being people leaving towels on them in the morning and not using them until 2-3 in afternoon. We didn't have any cockroaches in our room but did see plenty around the bar area at night! Nice area to walk around however pretty steep. Would recommend going on the boat trip to see dolphins and wales - great day out! Ninos restaurant was great too!

I thought I would have to write about...

I thought I would have to write about this one with their being so many negative comments..... We paid £2400 for our flights, accommodation in Tamaimo tropical, and private mini bus transfer, and to be honest I thought it was an absolute bargain for the middle 2 weeks in aug. We knew it was only 3 star, had read all reviews before booking last minute, and went with open minds.
Drinks and food available as follows:
Breakfast: 08:30 - 10:30
Snack bar: 11:00 - 12:00
Lunch: 13:00 - 15:30
Snack bar: 16:00 - 18:00
Dinner: 18:30 - 21:30
Someone said earlier that ice creams had to be paid for, No they dont, you can get ice cream from the buffet area at any of the above times, what you have to pay for is the ones like cornetto etc, well you dont get that at any all inclusive so far as I know.
In the buffet area, there are many drinks machines, like hot drinks inc hot choc, fruit juices, carbonated drinks ie coke etc, lager, and wine. should you want anything else, ie a short with your evening meal, then you would have to to round to one of the other bars. Some times one of the machines would not be working and I would overhear people complaining to each other. All you need to do is tell one of the many staff clearing the tables and they sort it out.
Food was plentiful also, it was always fresh, you could get your evening meal, and just get to the chips or something when they had run out, they were so quick you were not waiting more than a minute for a fresh batch, if ever at all.
There was no room to get bored with the food, there was so much to choose from, fresh soup, salads, about 8 types of bread, fresh fish, pasta, rice, veg, chips, potatoes, and other things like, steak (ok it wasnt rump but it was v nice) veal, rabbit (didnt try that out of principal for fluffy ones) caniloni sorry cant spell that one, lasagne, fresh sardines, fresh salmon about every 3 days, paella (with big prawns, squid and fish - lovely) the list goes on there was too much to choose from. Sweets were also nice, but im not a sweet lover and would have loved a bit of cheesecake. Lots of fresh fruit.
I admit, there was not burgers and pizza available, although you could make a burger yourself, or a hot dog from the snack bar at the buffet area in those times. Ive heard others say that children are not catered for, Im afraid I may upset some people with my comments here, but remember they are my comments and the way im bringing up my children. Who did not go hungry to say the least.
Our girls aged 10 and 3 enjoyed their meals, they had off days, but we would just pick up extra fruit for them to eat later. I heard no amount of people complaining that there was no chicken nuggets or fish fingers!!!!! Call me what you want but I find it really sad that that is all they can eat. Maybe I was brought up different. My kids eat what we do, never been any different, they love their salad and veg, having a burger, or chips even is an absolute treat, (as it should be). As I said these are my views, if all you feed your kids on is fast food, then dont bring your kids here and expect a massive choice.
Cockroaches
For gods sake you are in Tenerife. (so close to africa) Eh Hello, the place is invested with them, admittedly, as ive been to the island since being 4, they are the only creepy crawly I absolutely hate, but it does not stop me visiting. We arrived and found we were on a ground floor 1 bed apt. Oh dear, I think we found about 6 or 7 on arrival at 5.30 in the morning. No problem, we got rid, (or rather hubby did whilst I stood on the bed)
Went to reception to get spray. Unfortunately reception, had just taken a big bus full, so bought some from over the road at Dia supermarket. 3 euros. Sprayed all round the edges of the rooms, and then left for the day, I went back an hour earlier than the kids and hubby, to open all doors and air the room. Yes I here you all scream, I could have asked to be moved, but it was ground floor, and to be honest, I wanted to keep that, as it was no hardship to go to the toilet when ever we wanted rather than using the public ones, which were traditionally wet during the day, (not my idea of fun) and I could chuck all the towels, air bed, many rubber rings, boat and buckets over the wall each day.
Pool area and sunbeds
Pigeons? What Pigeons didnt see any, so not sure about last review. We went round the pool with the bridge over (technically not a bridge but it looks nice) Pools were very nice, yes the bottom of the pools could do with a repaint, particularly the baby pools in both areas looked a bit drab, but no less fun for the kids.
Their were life guards in both areas, who walked around and got to know people and their kids, someone mentioned that someone had an accident, and nothing was done, but was the lifeguard watching at the time? I cant comment. My 3 year old who is very quick on her feet, and determined, took her arm bands off and ran and got in the deep end, she was sinking in front of us, all ended well, she started kicking her feet whilst we were desperately running towards her, and came to the top again, a little shocked, but could I blame anyone else NO I couldnt, kids are kids, and you need to keep watch on them, and even though we were, she still got out ran off, and got back in again, missing the armbands whilst we were in the pool.
Sunbeds
Now thats a subject, Never in my life have I seen such fuss. they are locked up each evening mostly, if not get up at 6.30 otherwise you wont get one, chains are unlocked at 9ish, if you are not there and quick, tough luck you wont get one, well in aug anyway. people start queuing from 8 each day, my husband just jumped the balcony wall each day (ground floor) as we heard the chains coming off and we got 2 each day.
Which leads me onto my next point very nicely, we were a family of 4, with 2 kids, why on earth would we reserve a sunbed for them, when they are in the pool all day? Thats part of the big problem, we saw families with 4 kids and they reserved one for each kid, I thought us british were curteous but obviously not given the situation of fighting for beds. My hubby even heard one couple with no kids, arguing one morning because one of them suggested they get an extra one, 'just in case' im not sure what that meant but luckily the other one said no, there is others who need them. just shows the mentality of it.
We laid one day all day, and there was a family of english next to us, who had 2 sunbeds unused all day by 2 boys, ridiculous I say. I Know theres an argument that you have paid for kids also, but if everyone just took what they needed rather than wanted there would not be a problem.
Spanish
The hotel is used by many different nationalities, but in the main, made up of english and spanish, the only reason I make a point of this, is because this is unusual, and they must not be mistaken for people who are from Tenerife, (Tenerifians) they do actually travel from spain to come here with big families, not a problem per ce, but they also add to the sunbed problem for kids in a big way. I found it unusual that not many of them tried to talk to the english at all, it was a total split. And the attitude problems I did come across which we all get on hols, were all from spanish. I apologise for saying this, I love spanish people, Im just saying what happened. Tenerife people are lovely and nothing like the spanish in this resort were.
I was particuluarly agreaved one day, when asked to move from a 6 seat table in the buffet, because we couldnt find a 4, by, wait for it, the one and only english waitress, 'the spanish need these tables' I wanted to smack her one, but moved anyway.
Rooms
We stayed in a 1 bed apt, no aircon (but got given a fan by an english couple leaving), fans cost I think 25 euros a week, so did the safe, which i think is a swizz. didnt pay it and hoped for best, although i did hear about someone on ground floor, who slept in the lounge area, and because they left their patio open, someone got in whilst she was sleeping, walked past and got her bag, credit cards and all. We did not ever leave our patio doors open anyway Im not that daft.
Everything cleaned as you would expect, nice towels etc clean bedding, only issues we had was that the bathroom door needee replacing, it still did the job, but it looked like someone had hacked at it from the inside phycho style, but obviously this did not affect our holiday, their was a leak from whenever you had a shower, which arose at the bottom of the bath (we could not work out why) we just put down a towel, and put it in the bath for the maid to take the next day.
All in All (ive tried to make this as truthful as poss)
would i go back again? well we try not to go back to same place twice anyway as a family, having done Tenerife since 4 with my mum and dad 3 times a year until 16. I now want to experience different places, but YES i would, although I would prob not go mid season.
If you do any trips in Tenerife do Loro park is fantastic it has grown so much since I first went 30 years ago, ( and that was back when it was just loro park ie parrot park in spanish) but is absolute caos going mid season, but never never to be missed. Over the childhood years I have seen loro park grow, sealions, who are absolutely not to be missed, they are so funny, the dolphins, are the unsung heros, because they do so much but its pure entertainment and not quite as funny, and the new section for the oca wales is so fab, so funny, tip if you dont want to get wet do not sit in the wet zone.
suspect the amount of people and the sunbed problem would be less too out of main season
if you have any questions im happy to help my email is debby.beattie@btinternet.com
And thankyou to all those lovely people we met on holiday particulary with the kids, Katie (10) and Amelia (3 the one who looked like an angel, but wasnt lucifer an angel ha), who met so many friends and loved every minute.

We are a family of four and have just...
1 / 10
Aug 2008, Mrs S Eldridge

We are a family of four and have just returned from this awful hotel. We read the reviews before we booked and they did seem quite mixed, some good some bad, but I now wish I had read more of the bad reviews. We paid £2400 all inclusive as I thought the children would benefit from drinks and food all day and we would be left in peace. They did use the free drinks facility but the snacks were pretty rough. They just ate chips with a bread roll, I was expecting burgers and pizza but there was none, just the same thing every day. Ice creams had to be paid for. The apartment was ok although we had to ask to have our room changed to a higher floor (the higher the floor the less chance of cockroaches in your room) although we still found them on the balcony, half dead, most mornings. A big problem with pigeons leisurely walking around the swimming pool, in and out of everyone's sunbeds and around the food area, ocassionally sipping from the pool water. The hotel opposite, the Barcelo, didn't seem to have the same problem, probably because they have invested in a cat!!! My partner had to queue for sunbeds from 8.00am every morning, they weren't unlocked until 9.00am, and there were not enough tables and chairs for evening guests, so we didn't bother dressing up in the evening as we found ourselves sitting on a wall most evenings eagerly keeping an eye out for people to leave to grab a table, as was everyone else, it was like the January sales!! We went for dinner most evenings around 9.00pm to avoid the mania of people trying to get food from the buffet. This was the best time to go down to eat but unfortunately I had to lay our table everytime, no staff coming over to lay it for me. We estimated that our dinner from start to finish lasted approximately 20 mins. The hotel was completely full when we were there, quite a lot of spanish, who do seem to get preferential treatment. On the plus side the room was kept clean everyday with fresh towels and the local bars and restaurants did seem very nice and friendly, I just wish we had gone self catering. One last thing the pool area can be very dangerous, we witnessed a young lad who nearly drowned from diving into his rubber ring and getting stuck, even though there are signs up saying no inflatabiles etc in the pool no one takes any notice.

Spent the last two weeks at this...
8 / 10
Aug 2008, Mrs K Campbell

Spent the last two weeks at this hotel with my partner . We paid peanuts really for this fortnight holiday... 500 for two weeks all inclusive!! So we weren't too sure what to expect but we were both plesantly surprised with the hotel. Thomas cook rep--bob seemed lovely. Nice Staff , many very very friendly. NOTE TIP BARMEN, as they will look after you. Queues for drinks can get big!
Entertainment was good sometimes crazy which made it funny to us. . . very benidorm tv show...heehee! But no the shows were really good was just not enough seats. Shows from reptiles, to boybands to chinese gymnasts, to magic shows. . Bingo every night which proved popular! winnings up to 200 euroes each night!!
Would def go all inc , as always something to eat and drink all day til about 11 I think. Can get ice cream all day. Great snacks eg hotdogs and burgers!
The resort itself is lovely and can do many walks, it is quiet though so need to get out so don't get bored. Big fiesta when we were there celebrating their saint..would def recommend going when that is on. Brilliant funfair and firework show.
Week one was great , we enjoyed the meals, however by the end of the 2nd week we did get fed up of the same food.
Also as the time went on a few disappointing things cropped up. You must get up early for sunbeds. about 8.30. There were queues for them! I know this happens everywhere but never seen queues before. We had cockroaches. I know this is common but not nice. We got spray from reception that killed them..yuk! I agree with the other comments that the spanish were loud. Was glad when they left!
But then the unimaginable happened! A 19 year old boy one evening was pushed in the pool by a friend and he was then violently beaten by a hotel security guard while another one watched!!!! This 19 yr old lad was saying amigo amigo and wasn't causing any trouble.
As far as I am aware the accused guard has been given the sack but then one watching hasn't. The upset family that evening went to reception and asked them to phone the police but they refused to phone them and refused them to use the hotel phone!
So we can all moan about the little things that annoy us on holiday eg sunbeds and the spanish but I wouldn't go back to that hotel again. No- one deserves a beaten for no reason. Even if he was causing trouble he shouldn't have been beaten up. You think your safe in your hotel but obv not in this one. It may have been a one off but are you willing to take the risk. I know at least ten families that were eye witnesses and they certainly wont b back
