We arrived at Reina Sofia Airport, Tenerife and was met by the Thomas Cook rep, no problems there. He directed us to our coach. My mate and i got on it, to find only 2 other people on it and he said as it was now full, we will depart! We left with no rep onboard and the... more

I literally fell for the place!
Great hotel with wide choice at buffet meals and helpful and cheerful staff. Our stay there in early October was timed around my birthday on 5th, but the day before I slipped on some water on the marble floor in the bedroom (completely my fault) and couldn't get off the floor. The hotel was magnificent - doctor in ten minutes, ambulance a few minutes later, and for my birthday next day a bottle of champagne from the manager to cheer me up which helped tremendously! Despite a couple of broken toes and a cracked knee cap, the rest of our stay went well thanks mostly to this lovely hotel's quiet corners, pool area and central position. It might have been spoiled with a large hospital bill (X-rays, jabs, pain-killing drip, consultant and ambulance) but that came to 150 euros only, reclaimable on insurance of course - cannot imagine it all being achieved so smoothly and quickly in the UK nowadays I regret to say. Looking forward to staying at the H10 Tenerife Playa again in the Spring. We will once again upgrade to a Junior Suite because at £10 a night it is excellent value - double the space both within the room and on the balcony, which had wonderful sea views. Here we watched surf-boarders, large breaking waves, swaying palms and glorious sunsets, all as a local busker played pan pipes in the square below - surreal. If you want to self-cater cold drinks or have medicine to keep cool, refrigerators and glasses can be hired simply by purchasing a starter pack of drinks upon arrival -about 34 euros. We remembered to do this despite the couple of "welcome to the hotel" glasses of champagne handed to us when checking in. Champagne was also served at breakfast on Tuesdays and Fridays - we drank it as Bucks Fizz and could easily get used to this level of decadence! Vegetarians and those on fat-free diets are well catered for within the buffets, those without any restrictions will have a field day! Not so sure about food for very young children, though, and I would suggest that parents think carefully whether this hotel is suitable for under-5s because of the large pool area, menu, and very small lifts which make it awkward with a pushchair. Entertainment is another matter. There is a children's entertainment programme, though mostly in Spanish only. We enjoyed three good shows each week out of the six offered,, and know that every night there was live music and dancing, but hotel guests seeking a vibrant (or do I mean vibrating) disco went out from the hotel, as did a number of guests seeking to do some serious drinking, as outside the daily happy hour, drinks were expensive in the hotel. The H10 chain of hotels have an excellent reputation throughout mainland Spain and the Canaries - the Tenerife Playa is beginning to creak with age a little (built late 1950s) and needs some refurbishment but is still a classy hotel. A mixed review ....
A mixed review from us for this hotel, which says a lot really as you find no consistency at all in reviews for this hotel both on this site and others. The hotel is clean, tidy, smart and well presented with very good facilities. There are toilets on each floor for general use; a good size lounge on the second floor with T.V, Internet (1E = 10 mins) and vending machines; secure luggage room for when you check out; a bar; clean & tidy pool area including Jacuzzi and snack bar; a nudist sun lounging area on the roof and various other facilities. Can’t go into too much detail as we didn’t use most of the facilities. We were told when booking that the hotel takes no children under the age of 12. Wrong. A recent (we think) change of policy means there are now kids there ….. but beware if you’re thinking of taking any – there is NOTHING for them to do in this accommodation. No entertainments, games, kids club or anything that we could see. Reception staff in this Hotel are hit and miss, some speak good English (mostly the ladies), some speak none. Sometimes they are helpful, sometimes not so much. Checking in was fine, all explained, nice and polite. Spoke to the same woman 10 minutes later about changing room and she just didn’t want to know. We had asked for a high room with sea view, we were allocated a ground floor room with a view of the lawn area behind the noisy main street. When we asked if was possible to change room we were told ‘No high room, you no get, maybe another day’!! The room itself was fine, everything you would expect, nothing more nothing less. Shame the Hotel could not be more accommodating in moving us to a better spot. Maid service is daily, beds made, clean towels etc…. however, the bedding is not changed and the floors are not cleaned properly. We don’t smoke, but found a mouldy old cigarette under the bed towards the end of stay which had obviously been there for some time! Also, rather disturbingly, we noticed two dead cockroaches in the hall near our room one afternoon….and there they remained for nearly a full 24 hours before they disappeared! The restaurant service is ok, waiters a plenty to show you to a table and take your drinks order. They are very efficient in keeping the restaurant clean and tidy, taking away your used cutlery and crockery very promptly. It is a self service buffet for the food. The food itself again is very hit and miss, some of it is very nice, some of it is the worst I’ve had! Don’t go anywhere near the lasagne – absolutely putrid. There is always a nice selection of salad, fruits, bread and cheese products. There are always meat and pasta dishes, also different veg and potato dishes and always chips. There is also a hot plate cooking fresh stuff while you wait i.e. fish, steaks, chops, omelettes etc. The dessert selection is average but ok. Breakfast is the same everyday but there’s plenty – cheeses, meats, breads, eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, chips (!), omelettes etc. All drinks are inclusive in the mornings but you pay for your drinks at night. We were half board. We have a comfortable stay here – what leads to negativity in my review (and other reviews for this hotel) is that it is marketed as a plush 4* when in fact it’s an average 3* at best. It is not awful here, it’s perfectly liveable for your week or fortnight away, but it isn’t the Ritz by any standards and you WILL be disappointed if you are accustomed to true 4* living….. to repeat some other people’s comments, this hotel is the thorn on the side of the H10 chain and needs some re-investment to bring up standards asap …. or change it’s rating to 3*.
Nice hotel, shame about the staff!
Myself and a friend stayed at this hotel from 23rd June till 30th June 06....the hotel is ok but I would not rate it as 4 star......having stayed at numerous 4 and 5 star hotels all over the world, I have come to expect, at the very least, tea & coffee making facilities in a 4 star room. The hotel is clean, and comfortable, but tired, and really in need of refurbishment. The location is excellent. The staff, on the other hand (especially the reception and dining room staff) are dismissive and sometimes downright rude! On the last morning...breakfast was supposed to be served from 0700...there was no cooked breakfast on offer until after 0730...which was no good to several people who were leaving that day, and had an early pickup ....when we asked why there was nothing cooked yet...we were just met by a shrug and a dismissive wave of the hand, by the waiter who appeared to be in charge! I have visited Puerto de la Cruz many times since the 70's, and always been greeted by warm and friendly staff at all the hotels...but this is not a good advertisment for an H10 hotel.
great time
having spent a week at hotel in may with my husband i can speak for both of us when i say what a lovely time we both had .The weather was gloriuos as was the hotel The staff were very helpful ,the pool area was peaceful and quiet making apleasantand comfortable place to relax.Would definetly go back again
Lovely Break
My husband and I have just had a weeks break at the hotel. On arrival we were given a room at the back of the hotel which we didn't like. We went to recepection and where upgraded at a cost of 9euros each, per day, to a room with a balcony and sea view. Halfway throught the week occasional tapping which was going on beneath us-new bar or something being renovated, started in avengance. Felt like it was in the room. We complained and the pleasant hotel receptionist 'Sandra' offered us alternative accomodation, further over the front of the hotel on the fifth floor. This was wonderful! It must be noted we feel that the staff - maily older males dominated the staffing structure of the hotel. I would like to have seen a few younger members of staff, lots of skills to be taught by the older generation. Food was good, longed for prawns but never saw any. Entertainment in the evening was dreary and old fashioned would have liked something a little more alternative. I am only 52 years old, a youngster of the 6O'S and rocking 70's. The kids who stayed at the hotel looked bored off their skulls in the evening. Overall a pleassant holidayand we would stay there again.
Great Stay at the Tenerife Playa
We stayed at the Tenerife Playa for a week 3rd to 10th March. The hotel is in a perfect position and our room was on the 7th Floor overlooking the side street and sea to the left and Mount Teide to the right. Very quiet - no problems sleeping here! The rooms were spacious and well maintained. Beds comfy too. We had half-board and we certainly could not fault the food. There was plenty of choice and the hot grill section was excellent. Pool area is well-maintained with a lifeguard. Two pools and a spa. We thoroughly enjoyed our week's break at this hotel and would certainly return.
loved it
Stayed at the hotel for a week. This was my first hoilday to tenerife and loved every minute of it. The hotel was lovely, very clean and the rooms were great to to. Staff were very friendly most of the time as the men at the reception were sometimes moody. Food was great. At Breakfast you have a choice of cereals, fresh fruit or a fry up. Beware though one morning there was fish parcels and squid rings!. Dinner was very good to choices of chips, vegtables, chicken, steaks all of which were lovely. At night times there is entertainment of which is ok. But i wouldnt recomend the bingo loco as it was quite boring. The bar serves all sorts of drinks but you must try the cocktails as they are lovely. I would say that you would be better to go to the lido in front of the hotel as it is a big area whereas the pools at the hotel are nice but you have to be there early to get a seat and the area is shaded by the hotel. You also must try the chinese down the road from the hotel lovely food and all you can eat for 5 euros 50. also beware of the train ride to loro parque going there is ok but coming back was quite scary.
Spoiled memories of yesteryear.
I have said for the last 7 years that this was the best hotel I'd ever stayed in. I wish I hadn't gone back. Don't get me wrong, the location is excellent, right on the seafront, ideal for elderly people, as the more inland you go, the steeper the climb gets. If you get a view over the lido, there is no noise from clubs either. Foodwise, there is always something for even the fussiest of diners(even chips for breakfast if so desired!). Sadly it's all a bit cold(and they know it), hence a microwave oven is there to reheat your own food. There is only 1 of them to go round hundreds of guests though. Don't be later than 8am for breakfast or turn up at 19:22 for tea (as indicated as opening time, it opens well before that) or you may face a long queue. Drink prices are extortionate. No smoking in restaurant, bar, or entertainment rooms. I've read on a few sites that all rooms come with a minibar, not so. They are available for 30 euros, but they only have a few, so people wishing to use them to keep insulin etc cool beware. 2 swimming pools, 1 is heated, though I saw it only 3c warmer than the unheated several times. All areas were spotless, staff very efficient, except the reception chaps who were extremely miserable and offhand. Overall, still a nice hotel, but it's standards have slipped considerably. A bit of fine tuning and I'm sure it will be a classic holiday again for somebody.
Great Hotel
My boyfriend and I have just returned from a week-long trip in Puerto de la Cruz. The hotel was excellent. The room was lovely which a great view of the mountain on one side and the ocean/picinas martiquez on the other. the staff was helpful and the buffet was always good with a nice selection.(we had the breakfast/dinner plan). The hotel was also nicely situated so within a 5 minute walk, you were in the center of everything. Could not have been better.
Great location, good price / quality
My wife, 20 months old daughter and I spend 7 days at the H10 Tenerife Playa in the "Puente de Diciembre". Overall we were satisfied with the hotel. Location is great, in the middle of Pto de la Cruz and just opposite to Lago Martianez. Everything is accessible with a short walk (1' bus to Loro Parque, 1' Martianez, 20' Playa Jardin, etc.) Probably because of our baby, they upgraded us to a "junior suite" with enough extra space for a couch and the crib. Room was spacious and with a great view on the bay. The hotel is a little old (look is defintely 70s) but clean and must have been renovated in the last decade. Rooms are quiet and everything worked as expected. Don't expect too many amenities (like coffee makers) if you're used to US-style hotels. You also have to ask explicitly for the fridge, and the safe costs 2 EUR / day (common in Spain). The pool area is good - although when they say "heated pool" in winter they really are overstating it a bit (water is cold - yes you can swim, but more for a challenge than a real pleasure). Food is barely ok. Unfortunately, they adjust to the dominant population (British and German in their 50s and 60s and up...) so don't expect anything too fancy. Breakfast buffet is good, but the choice at dinner was a bit disappointing. To summarize, we would probably recommend it, there was really nothing wrong with the hotel, but only if you set your expectations right (ie, not really a ****, but a good ***). By the way, STAY AWAY FROM "El Gallego" restaurant across the street! They served us salad with live bugs and made us wait 45' for a "pulpo gallego".
