This is a three star hotel so why do...

This is a three star hotel so why do people seem to expect five star for a three star price. I have been to this hotel twice with my husband and two young kids and would definately go back. Yes the food could be better, yes the pool could be bigger, yes the rooms could be newer but thats what three star is like. I like this hotel because the sea on that part of the beach is shallow and calm perfect for kids. It is the sea by the way and not the lagoon as a previous review said. The people who gave this a rating of 1/10 are the type who want to pay three star but expect five star and if they paid five star for some where else would find fault with that also. As for the comment about the urine soaked pillow did that person have the pillow tested? (this was most likely due to once a day application suncream which has a nasty habbit of staining). I found the rooms clean and I agree that the sheets weren't 400 thread count egyptian cotton but it's a THREE star hotel. My advice is go there if you are on a buget but if you want five star try the Riu instead if you have an extra £3,000.

Apr 2008, Mr Miguel Jimenez

went there last year - not the best looking hotel but had all the neccesities - barman was always a joker - drinks on tap - rooms cleaned everyday - food left alot to be desired though - front desk seemed rude but always answered the phone and complied with the demands regarding extra bedding etc - pool area was nice - beach area was fantastic - dj and club promoters always up for a laugh - overall not to bad for the price paid and felt it contributed to the experience of staying in mexico - would love to go back one day!!

me and my wife went here for our honeymoon.what a craphole!!!split up on plane for a start there and back).Would never travel with my travel again. All the reception desks was empty when we got to airport but there was one with a three mile que and quess what "IT WAS MY TRAVEL" great start..Got to room, bowl of fruit wrapped up in cling film (very appetising)!! also bottle of champagne, that wasn"t bad.Stuck right next to an air conditioning unit (great nights sleep).Got moved then power went, couldn"t fix it.Moved again. Then toilet broke and guess what, couldn"t mend it got moved again.Got the mother of all diarrhea for over a week due to the crap snap we was fed.Didn"t know what to eat for best in end so we started to eat out most of the time but it was expensive but at least the craps subsided.Thats why we went all inclusive thinking we would be ok but what a shock for the dive we was chucked in.Cocktails was the worst we had ever seen (can"t beat greece for them).Pool was ok and the beach. My advice "DONT GO THERE"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Be warned.Cancun absolutely georgeous,go back there tomorrow but not at that dive!!!!Put a two page complaint and didn"t want to know. Thanks my travel.Wont get my money again if i was a milloinaire!!!!!!

In my lifetime I have stayed in...
1 / 10
Dec 2007, Mr JH Hunedoug

In my lifetime I have stayed in hotels of various standards however it is safe to say that the Carrousel is the biggest cest pit on the face of this earth.
My first impressions of this hotel on arrival made me sick. The lobby area looked like something out of 1970s. The staff did not even speak English to a respectable level and couldn’t grasp simple concepts such as directions to my room or what time dinner finished.
When I eventually found my room, I had to basically kick the door down to gain entrance (which wasn't an issue due to sheer anger towards this disgrace of a hotel).
My room was stinking of vermin. My bed sheets were orange and had random brown stains on them. Instead of white pillows, I was hit with what I could only describe as urine stained concrete blocks. May it be also noted there were dirty skid stains all over the inside of my WC!
Now the food - there is only one phrase I could use to describe it. "Splattered Slime". It was cheap and was clearly leftovers from the day before.
This year I will travel back to Cancun and am looking forward to staying in hopefully a much better hotel. Anyone thinking of going to the "Dirtousel" then please think again.

Oh where to start... first this began...

Oh where to start... first this began with a lie from the travel company that sold us the all inclusive trip (I honestly don't recall the travel company). We were first told that we were in a 3 star hotel (ok fine - not the best),BUT many of the rooms were upgraded to a 5 star (we were not the only couple that was told this, as we met a few other couples told the same scheme story). Needless to say the rooms were not EVEN CLOSE to 5 star (let's say perhaps a half star). I would rather stay at a Super 8. I walked in (this was my honeymoon, the first trip that my spouse and I had ever taken alone together), and I just bawled my face off. The beds were sinking into the middle, the blankets were an orange colour from the 70's, the pillow cases and sheets WERE NOT white, rather a pale stained yellow. There was no alarm clock. We received two prank calls in one night, we could hear everything from the other room (requested 2 or 3 times for them to be quiet), and our A/C broke down one night.
The beach is on the lagoon side of things, making it a bit more dirty, and not the most attractive when you are sitting to suntan on the beach. The food was simply average, not getting to choose from a whole lot. Once we went to our other resort that we had planned for the second week of our trip, we were informed that the Carousel was the worst hotel to stay at in Cancun.
Yes there may have been activities to do by the beach and what not, but my goodness, the rooms - you sleep in - gross and disgusting. I would not ever recommend this to anyone, not even for families. My advice, DO your research before you stay anywhere. If you CAN'T find pictures of the hotel you are staying at on the net, then that has to tell you something. Even when we drove up to the hotel, I just knew it wasn't even close to what we were told. If I could have afforded it, I would have left to go elsewhere. For the record, for the most part, what is considered 5 stars in Mexico, is not 5 star in North America - please keep that in mind.

Anyone who gave this hotel less than...

Oct 2007, Miss L Bernard

Anyone who gave this hotel less than 5/10 are obviously used to going to 4/5 star hotels. I don't know what they expected on a 3 star hotel but I thought this place was excellent value for money.
The Carrousel is now called the Ocean Hotel after a takeover a few months ago and they had started doing renovations to the rooms a few days before we left.
There was a great choice in breakfast in the morning - cooked breakfasts, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast etc . There is a different themed buffet every night and I found that there was plenty to choose from. Plus there is an Italian restaurant you can make a reservation for.
The rooms were clean and the maids are in every day. The beach is immaculate also. The only downfall to the place is that the entertainment isn't up to much but I'm sure that will change in the near future since the management has changed and most people left comments about this in the comment book before they left.
The staff are the friendliest I've encountered on any holiday I've been on and they would do anything to help you. The Ocean Hotel is slightly further out of the main bar/club area but the bus is only around 30p and the driver gives you a shout when you're at your stop so you know where to get off.
I would probably go back to this hotel mainly because of the staff and the friendly atmosphere. First Choice is also a great company to travel with as our rep Tony was excellent and made us feel very welcome and didn't pressure us to do the excursions.

(Warning do not stay at this hotel) mind you this is not a hotel trust me! if you never listen to any ones advice "fine" thats up to you? But just remind your self when your checking in to this hell hole “you have been warned"!
The food is just cold swill the drinks are watered down, the rooms I would not put my dog in , the beach is the worst in Cancun ,stay the other side on the nice beach ! Pay a little more and you will have a great time, if this hotel is offered to you free still don’t go (my travel more like hell travel).

Just returned from a 2 week break in...
8 / 10
Jan 2007, Mr D.m Johnstone

Just returned from a 2 week break in Cancun with my girlfriend.
Our hotel was only a 3 star but was quite adequate for what we needed. The rooms where cleaned and serviced every day.
The restaurant was self serve food but with waiter table service to fetch drinks. The bar staff very very good and friendly. Although the food was definitely better in our first week than second, never the less there was plenty to choose from.
The other guests in the hotel were also very friendly and everyone got on and had a good laugh. (Something you don’t seem to get in 4 or 5 star) other people have been giving the hotel a bad slating but I reckon it’s over all a very good place to stay.
At the end of the day how much time do you actually spend in your room. Yes the rooms are basic but to us that was fine, they are clean and have air con.
We will definitely be going back. The only bad thing about the whole trip was the airline staff (MyTravel) and the Airtours rep who we never actually saw the whole 2 weeks. Will not fly with them again!

Just spent 2 weeks at Club...

Nov 2006, Mr D Morley

Just spent 2 weeks at Club Carrousel and found it perfectly OK for a 3 star hotel.

The hotel is located at the edge of the hotel zone so to visit the shopping arcades/bars and nightclubs you need to catch a bus. However they run every couple of minutes and only cost 6.5 pesos per journey.
Our room was simply furnished but perfectly adequate and had air conditioning, colour TV and balcony. The chambermaids were excellent who cleaned the room, replaced the bed linen and towels every day.
The restaurant is self service for all meals and there is also a hamburger stall open during the day on the beach. We found the food was good with a several Mexican dishes available in addition to the usual international fare. At the time of our stay the front disco bar was shut and only the beach and pool bars open but service was good and always with a smile.
The beach in front of the hotel had straw umbrellas and plenty of sun beds. The swimming area is flanked by boat jetty’s and very shallow although you might want to keep an eye open for boats if snorkelling.
Since it was low season the evening entertainment was only visiting acts doing ethnic dances most nights, but recommend staying and seeing the Malay/Aztec troupe who were superb.
Our only complaint was that the music around the pool was too loud for our taste so we spent our time on the beach.
All in all a good 3 star hotel and would recommend it if you are looking for a value all inclusive holiday.

Have just returned from two weeks all...
1 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr Ca Cameron

Have just returned from two weeks all inclusive in Cancun.
Myself and Julia travel around three to four times a year whether through work or vacation.
I have never seen a worse, rundown hotel than the Carousel.
I arranged this break through MyTravel whom after our experience with them I would never use nor advise anyone else to. The Carousel is one of the oldest hotels in Cancun and believe me it doesn't try to do anything to hide the fact.
Our room was a throw back to the 1970's, basic, badly decorated. Shower tiles cracked and missing. No doors on the wardrobes, filthy net, yes net curtains, No balcony furniture, door that would not lock. No top to the toilet. For the sake of web space I shall stop there but suffice to say I spent the first day taking photos of the apartment mainly because I was so angry that any travel company would describe this dump as a 3 star plus graded accommodation. It would not receive a visitation from the AA or RAC back in the UK.
We, having no option, stayed the night and attended our "welcome" meeting at the reception the following day with the rep. We explained the situation and asked for a move immediately. It took us to locate appropriate accommodation, reserve it and after all that got charged $170 to cross the road to begin our holiday in another hotel. Thanks Mytravel.
No British travel agent should even contemplate considering the Carousel as a destination, it is truly woeful and I intend to sue.
Oh Cancun is great, would return tomorrow but go 4/5 star.

Aug 2006, Miss Thomas

My partner and I were both very excited to be going to Cancun as it had the perfect blend of attractions for us. One day you can visit Mayan ruins and go to underground caves to witness sacred cenotes, the next you might decide to go to a water theme-park, and the next go for a lively night out.
The nightlife is very close to the hotel and while it may be slightly intimidating in scale most places go out of their way to please you. Often there would be people even to light your cigarettes for you.
Other options vary very widely on how to spend your time. The options are endless, but I recommend a day out at the nature park Xcaret.
Our accommodation was fine. The staff were friendly and helpful and while I did miss the British bathrooms, the rooms are nice and refreshingly cool with the air conditioning on. Our room became a haven from the scorching heat out there, which was often past 40 centigrade.
With our own section of beach and two restaurants to choose from on an all-inclusive basis we couldn't complain. There were also two swimming pools, although we were right by the sea as I say, so there was little need.
In short, we would definitely visit again having had the time of our lives.

Awesome resort, very clean hotel, as much food and drink as you want. Gorgeous beach and lovely pool. Good water sports facilities nearby.
Highly recommend going on a dolphin swim!
Great place to stay, nice hotel staff, in a quiet area but 10 min bus ride away from planet Hollywood etc.
Good for all types of travelers, but maybe there is too little for children to do.
