Superb
from HonestManAyr
Superb location. Great value. Very comfortable rooms. Very friendly and helpful staff. Delicious breakfasts (haven't tried the evening meals but I'm sure they are also). Able to cater for large and small parties. We'll be back!!! Colin McGilp, Ayr.
Great Hotel
from wellingtonpoint
We stayed at Hedley house, York. and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The location is perfect for sight seeing, the breakfast was superb and the lounge area was extremely comfortable for a late night wine. The rooms are very spacious and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. J. Aylmer. Qld. Aust.
Perfect B&B
from travellingj0e
Stayed in this B&B for 2 nights and found it ideal for a break-away. The accomodation was clean and well presented, the breakfast was superb and the staff all very friendly. The hotel is also within walking distance to the town centre, will definately be back again.
What character are people talking about?!
from helenyw
We booked this hotel because our usual Holiday Inn York wasn't available due to half term holidays, and seeing the positive reviews we decided to book this. We were driving up from London on on a Friday afternoon and unfortunately the road was jam packed so I called the hotel to let them know that we'd be late. We were told that the front desk closes at 10pm, and that we'd have to get there by then. We made it (only because we continued for 5 hours without stopping), only to find that the "parking" that's available is a small area at the back of the house that was already full of cars. We then spent a further 30 minutes trying to park the car inch by inch in the space no one wanted (and we could see why!) in the dark. The room we had was at the top of the house. We had to climb up several flights of narrow staircase. The room was dated, we far preferred the standard Holiday Inn type that were at least modern! Is this the "character" that people were talking about? Are these the same people who still like the dark floral carpet and wall paper too? In the morning, we were woken up by children running around. I don't mind people having a bit of fun, but given that there was a gap of about 2 inches at the bottom of the door, the sound came through loud and clear. Breakfast was abysmal. We had to wait for a table to be available. The worst part was when the cooked food came, we nearly threw up after tasting the sausages. These must be the cheapest frozen stuff you can find in a cash-n-carry outlet! It just tasted of nothing, and looked like it was reconstituted fat and meat! We ended up having butter and toast, and went out for some real food. All in all, I would never stay here again, and would not recommend anyone to stay here. Unless, of course, they are the people looking for "character" over comfort!
Great Friendly Hotel

Great Friendly Hotel, situated only 10 minutes walk away from the main area...perfect for all your walking around. Would for sure return again soon.

If you seek a quiet comfortable and very convenient location for a short or long stay in the centre of York look no further. Hedley House is a short walk to the Minster and shops yet also comfortable walking distance to the railway station/museum. The staff are friendly and flexible and parking is usually right on site. The cooked breakfast is a real boost for a day spent exploring the sites and you can choose to eat in or out for dinner. There is a good selection of rooms and the en-suites are all recently installed. Excellent value for money!
Friendly and welcoming
from Visitor52
My friend and I have been visiting York for many years and have stayed in several other B&B's and hotels. I found this small hotel on the Internet in February 2006 and we stayed for a weekend in March. It proved to be the friendliest and most welcoming place we have stayed so far and we returned again for a Christmas shopping weekend in mid-November. We have particularly liked the fact that we can book an evening meal in the hotel for our first night when, after a long drive, we just want to relax. The menu is short but the food is freshly cooked and delicious. We have stayed in two different twin-bedded rooms (one on the first floor and one on the second and have found both rooms stylishly decorated and comfortable. There is no lift , however. The location of the hotel is quiet and it's not far to walk into the city through Bootham Bar, literally 5 minutes, so you can leave your car in the small, secure car park behind the hotel. Hedley House is also close to the City Art Gallery, the Minster, the Information centre and the Theatre Royal, as well as the shops. My friend and I shall definitely return!
Lovely Character Hotel
from Spaceflappy
What a lovely hotel, my husband and I and another couple stayed for the weekend, staying Friday and Saturday night. The hotel was just lovely, we stayed on a upper floor which kept us all healthy! There was off road parking at the back of the hotel which was accessed from the next street. Being in York of course the parking wasnt for the faint hearted, ie a bit of a squeeze between two houses (ladies I recommend your husbands park!). The hotel itself was decorated to a very high standard, and was lovely and quiet as it was off the main road, infact the only nightlife we heard were foxes on the old rail way! The staff were very helpful and the English breakfast was lovely. It is ideally located about 4/5 minutes walk away from the town centre/city walls, which was great as we didnt need the car or a taxi to see all the sites. Our room was huge, I think we had two double beds put together! We had a huge bathroom as well, loads of drawers and storage, drinks, hairdryer and tv with plenty of channels, would definitely stay there again. Well done Hedley House.
Packing them in at Hedley House
from tot2006
We wanted a comfortable hotel in central York with car parking and booked six months in advance based on the favourable reviews here on Tripadvisor and the information on Hedley House's own attractive website. However we were very disappointed with our stay. After a long and traffic-clogged journey we followed Hedley House's arrival instructions copied from their website and tried to park our car at the front of the hotel whilst going in on foot to ask reception for directions to the private car park. The parking bays at the front of the hotel are permit holders only and we had to illegally double park. It was then very irritating to be told that the access to the car park was actually in another road and to get there we had to turn the car around in the narrow road out front and retrace our route back to the main road, hence rejoining a queue of traffic to go back past where we had been ten minutes ago! Why don't they just direct straight to the car park on their website? - well, perhaps we have the answer - parking at Hedley House is limited and resident's cars are packed in, with those doing the "blocking" having to leave their keys at reception. Luckily for us we did manage to get a space, it being early afternoon, but at no point were we warned that we would be blocked in, or about the car key policy. Of course this may not bother some people, but car security and easily accessed parking is very important to us. We had asked when booking if car parking was available or reservable and were told it's not a problem, so we were annoyed at the reality. We had planned to go out into the countryside during our 4-day stay but didn't want to lose our parking space, so stayed put in York. Not what we had planned. On Hedley House's website there are photos of attractive and apparently spacious rooms - ours was neither. We had to climb five flights of stairs to a tiny (about 8 feet by 10 feet) double bedded room. One side of the bed was a small bedside cabinet, the other side was butted up against a single wardrobe. So one of us had to keep a nighttime glass of water, specs etc, on the floor. The bed itself was uncomfortable, with springs that could be easily felt. The room and bathroom were adequately clean, although I would have thrown out the tatty bedcover, curtains and once-white-now-very-grey towels long ago! Puzzlingly the large bathroom window had completely clear glass and we kept the window blind pulled down at all times in order to avoid offending the neighbours! We took breakfast on the first morning in the very cramped dining room. So many tables had been squeezed in that it was necessary for guests to walk sideways between tables. There was a very limited choice of carton juice and unmarked cereal, otherwise only cooked food was available. The bacon tasted of cardboard and the portions were small. The final straw was on our second morning when the fire alarm sounded for about ten seconds at 7:30 am. Suddenly it didn't seem so appealing being stuck in a box some five floors up and so we checked out two days early.

We stayed at Hedley House 27 - 30 October. What a warm welcome we got. We arrived at mid day and our room was available immediately. The room was large - no more than that it was HUGE, with a large en-suite bathroom with 2 showers, 1 cubicle and 1 over the bath (brilliant... more
