Self-propelled wheelchair users review
8 / 10
Oct 2010, Joanna

Sunnymeade is a "no-thrills" comfortable hotel that offers a warm welcome and fabulous B&B facilities.
There are 3 disabled parking bays and a good ramp up to the main door. There is also a wheelchair friendly path to the fantastic gardens, although this is not all that wide so best to check the width between the wheels of your chair before attempting it!
The wheel-in shower en-suite in room 4 is perfect for someone who requires a mobile shower chair to bathe. There is plenty of room around the toilet for a wheelchair user to transfer onto from their wheelchair to the toilet from either side, with fold-up hand rails situated on both sides for extra stability whilst transferring.
The room itself was a little small, offering only a minimal turning circle for a wheelchair around the bed area, but was adequate provided you don't mind the odd 'three point turn'! That said, I'm sure if you asked the proprietors permission to move the two twin beds together they would be more than accommodating. This would give far more floor space for wheelchair manevourability.
The beds are quite low which could cause transferring and carer back injury problems, but the proprietors do provide bed risers upon request. The beds themselves were comfortable, although they have sprung mattresses and not memory foam, which might prove problematical for those who are prone to bed sores.
In all, we were very impressed with Sunnymeade – one of the few places in North Devon which actually provide adequate facilities for paraplegics. And the owners are very accommodating too, which is a real bonus.

this is the most horrible place i have ever been, the people that run this so called hotel need to learn how to be nice to people, there disgusting, money grabbing, dirty, the rooms stink of pee and the dinning room a kitchen are used for the dogs to live in and thats where your food comes from i saw 2 dogs running round in the kitchen and dinning rooms playing with dirty dog toys, and thats where you eat,we paid almost 600 for a week,we left after one night, and never got a penny back off the dirty hole, its not right that these people can get away with ripping people off the way they do,should be something we can do,we saved for 2 years for that hoilday and she stole our money,if your thinking of going there dont theres lots of really nice places to stay just dont pick that one,i was sick when i smelt that room it was horrible just like a dirty nursing home,FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE

we booked 7 nights bed a breakfast for 3 of us,soon as we walked in the door the owner lynda shouted that she want s her money we had not even got the bags out of the car,so i paid her, then we went to the room and it was disgusting all we could smell was wee,we told her about this and she said she could not smell it,my mother in law came in and was sick in the sink due to the smell, there were dogs running round in the kitchen a dinning room where we were going to eat, dirty dog toys on the tables, that and the smell was bad enough but when the food was given to us thats if she did`nt spill it on my husband it was horrible we could not eat it,it was the worst food i had ever had put in front of me,we asked to be moved to another room due to the smell and that was just as bad, so we packed the car and told her we could not stay there she would not give us any of the 585 we had paid she was very nasty,i was very upset and there was no way she cared about anything she grapped the money soon as we walked in, now we know why we just want to warn people about this place, find somewhere else if i was you dont be fooled about the place its horrible
