I have just returned from a week in...

I have just returned from a week in the Dragon Hotel in Cervinia. I happened upon Mr Baskin's review after I made my booking with first choice and it was with some trepidation that I arrived in Cerinia, imagining that I was going to get very little sleep during the week. Firstly, the issue of the noise from the Bar and 'Pub' (basement bar) is perfectly valid, and I do think that First Choice should make mention of the fact in their brochure. However, I too invested four Euros in a pack of earplugs from the local chemist, and that, for me at least, ended the matter.
Again, the breakfast is limited, but what is on offer provides enough calories to get you through the morning to lunch. If I were to be particularly picky, those would be the negatives.
The positives? Well, as previously mentioned, the hotel is at the bottom of two runs and can accurately be described as 'Ski to door' with a two minute walk to the nearest drag lift, or a more taxing fifteen minute walk to the bubble lift.
The room was warm and clean if a bit 'cosy'. The rooms on the second floor are larger by virtue of the raised roof/ceiling.
But what really made the stay was the staff. The bar staff were a delight. They were constantly kept busy, but always had a smile or a joke and I don't think that I saw an empty glass on any table for more than a minute! But the Gold medal must go to the restaurant staff. All week, my party made pains of ourselves by wanting to dine in the bar as opposed to the dining room, and they were always happy to oblige.
Service was lightning quick and accurate. Indeed, on one night, there was only one waiter who had to look after an additional party of fifteen as well as the regular hotel diners. He was run off his feet for the better part of four hours, and yet kept his humour and grace.
As for the management? Well, I must respectfully disagree with Mr Baskin. I personally managed to snap the handle off my window catch and was anticipating a bill to have it replaced. Instead I was told that it simply wasn't an issue, and that was that.
Overall - I got exactly what I thought my money would get me. Namely, a bed, a breakfast and an evening meal. Over the top of that was an excellent level of service from all the staff. If you want accommodation close to the slopes with a pleasant (if lively) environment in the evening (it seemed to me that most of the Reps spent their evenings there...) and you think that you could live with a pair of ear plugs if need be, then the Dragon would be my recommendation.

My husband and I spent a week in...

My husband and I spent a week in Cervinia staying at the Dragon Hotel and we both found it to be an excellent place to stay. The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the lift and you can ski right back to the front of the hotel at the end of the day. If you have a front facing room, you have terrific views of the Matterhorn.
The rooms were a good size, modern, well furnished and comfortable. The breakfast was not a banquet but more than adequate with cereal, yoghurt, bread ham and cheese. The evening meal was very nice and there were always 2 choices of starter, main and dessert. The portions were huge and I usually had the starter as my main course which was more than enough.
There are 2 bars, one in the basement and one on the ground floor of the hotel. We spent many evenings in these 2 bars and they are by far the most popular bars in Cervinia. They have live entertainment from 4 pm to 6pm.
Staying above 2 lively bars does have it's disadvantages though. Although the hotel claims it is fully sound proofed, you can still hear the music beats late into the night. This is not a problem as my husband and I always take earplugs with us wherever we go and didn't have a problem with the music at all.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and I did not find it a problem that the bars were open to the public like the gentleman who wrote a negative review. After all it is not a chalet hotel and you don't get a lounge to sit in when you book into a Holiday Inn or a Travelodge do you?
Do not listen to the negative review, We found the Dragon to be a friendly, comfortable and convenient place to stay and we would definitely go back to stay again if we went to Cervinia. It is ideal for those who want to enjoy the après ski and don't mind a bit of noise. If you do mind the noise, take earplugs because everything else about the hotel is spot on.

We have had the most wonderful week...

Mar 2005, Mrs V Whittaker

We have had the most wonderful week in Cervinia, made special by staying at the warm and comfortable Dragon Hotel.
We had a lovely double bedroom with views overlooking the Matterhorn and our three boys (aged 16,12 and 10) shared a room overlooking the pedestrianised high street.
The bar is welcoming and the dining room attractive and friendly. We found the food delicious and not over-fussy. It was always well prepared and served promptly.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful and looked after us very well, including trying to help us find our 12 year old son when we couldn’t find him on the mountain one day!
All five of us thought it was the best place we had stayed on a skiing holiday and look forward to re visiting the Dragon Hotel in future years.

Although our room was very good, with nice views, to call this place a three star hotel is ridiculous.
It is not really a hotel at all, but rather a pub, with rooms above.
There are no lounges or indeed any rooms that are not open to the pub customers.
Even the dining room is taken over by them, sometimes before the diners have finished eating.
The food was very poor. There was a cold breakfast, but without any type of fruit or eggs.
Dinner was 3 courses, of which there were 3 choices of starter, but only 2 of the main course, and only 1 dessert on offer.
The food was often cold, and on more than one occasion had to be sent back as it was under-cooked. Once this happened to be chicken breast, and it was raw inside, which was potentially very dangerous.
The portions were not large and, to make matters worse, they offered a choice of potatoes or vegetables/salad, not both !
When we queried this we were told by that we would have to pay extra to have both. It was not surprising that both we, and many other guests often ate out. It was particularly bad for some vegetarians who were there, as there was little provided for them. One of them even told me that she had lost weight, during the week we were there (13-20 march 2005)
The worst thing however, was the incessant noise from the bar. Loud heavy bass music was played from around teatime until well after 1am.
They claim that the hotel is "soundproofed", but this was wholly insufficient, and we often had difficulty in getting to sleep.
We were due to leave Cervinia at 6am, so had to get to bed early the night before. After we were asleep, we were woken by the owner on the house phone demanding payment of our bar bill.
When we offered to pay in the morning, he came up to our room, and opened the door, using his house-key. When I told him I would pay in the morning, he threatened to call the police, so I had to get dressed and go down to the bar to pay him.
He was very arrogant and refused to accept any criticism of anything in the "hotel".
Needless to say, when we got up the following morning there was no breakfast or even a cup of coffee. Instead we found a notice telling us to leave via the back door, into the side alley, as the "hotel" was locked up for the night.
Hardly typical of a 3 star hotel !
If you have no need for sleep, then this will suit you fine, otherwise my advice is to go elsewhere in Cervinia, which is a lovely resort, nestling under the Matterhorn.
