Not bad hotel but be warned of the thin walls!
Stayed at this hotel recently and when we booked we were told that there were no rooms at the hotel but could stay in one of their cottages. It is actually one cottage about 5 mins walk from the hotel which has been divided into 4 rooms. The room we stayed in was very pleasant but the problem is that the walls are so thin! We were kept awake by our neighbours TV and had to call reception to get them to ask the occupants to turn it down! The next morning we were awoken by a child singing bob the builder at 730am! Not what you need when you're looking forward to a lie in on the bank holiday weekend! Clearly the hotel have used dry lining to cram in the most rooms possible! On the positive, the hotel is in a lovely location right on the beach and the food was very nice. Bar drinks were expensive, however. I would go back but ensure that if I did I was in the main hotel and not the cottages!
total rip off food prices
stayed over spring bank holiday for 1 night, on check in we had to wait as reception is not manned and had to phone to get attention, booked a meal in the resteraunt for 8.30, table not ready had to stand in doorway for 20 mins, ripped off at bar, 1lager and large wine £9+. sat at small bar type table, another 20 min wait for order £10for small cod and chips shower in room running hot and cold, small towels no towel rail a total rip off meal and bar prices, slow unorganised staff, a total disregard for hotel guests, more concerned at passing beer garden trade never ever again
Never ever again.
Shabby room , threadbare carpets. Advertises "Great Food" - usual bar fare but at double the prices. A total rip off - 4pounds 50 for a small pot of herbal tea, same price for a litre bottle of water. Have stayed here before , however decor and food and other standards have deteriorated.
You can certainly do better than here
Read the earlier reviews and booked in for a night. Had booked an Category A room which was described as "large with a sea view". The view it had but I would not describe it as large. My description would be compact, neglected and tired and with several faults such as cobwebs, non functioning radiator, unfinished plastering, broken equipment. Declined to eat there in the evening but returned for a drink at the bar, where I was duly ripped off £7.30 for a pint and a glass of wine, way over the top from anything else we had experienced all weekend. Had to wait at reception to check out because the couple in front were complaining bitterly about the standard of their accomodation. By the sound of it they were in the cottage described by the June 28th correspondant and not at all happy. To crown it all the confirmation letter quoted a lower price for the room than was actually charged at check out time. A "mistake" apparently. Very poor, management that do not care, overpriced in every aspect. I will not be returning here.
Fabulous wedding venue
we got married here last July ,stunning location which really sold it to us ! right on the beach and the gardens are fab too :) we had the reception in the marquee and it was fabulous ,cant fault the staff / food / resident DJ etc they arranged taxis / coaches for our travelling guests too staff couldnt do enough for us during the planning and on the day :) rooms were in need of updating (which having looked at the website recently they have started to do so) but we didnt spend much time in the room anyway lol we have been here for meals a few times aswell as for our wedding and the food is always of a v high standard and big portions too :)
Never again........
We visited the Oxwich Bay hotel the weekend of 14th/15th/16th Oct. It was the worse hotel I have ever stayed in. from the filthy bathroom, to peeling wallpaper...unhelpful receptionist staff. The price does not reflect the quality. The only good thing going for it was the view! Wiring hanging out of the wall....damp walls......cheap, old uncomfortable beds...staines on the sheets and towels. paper thin walls meant an uncomfortable night without any sleep. We requested an early breafast before we left, but they forgot to mention it to the night porter..who I must say was the only good thing the hotel had going for it..he would be a credit to any hotel. never again........
weekend at the oxwich bay
We visited the hotel with a certain amount of trepidation after reading a previous revue about it after making our booking, stating that the cottage room was smelly and stained carpets etc. We found the room to be very good, nicely furnished, clean and not a stain to be seen! The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was superb, enough to last you through the day! We will be making another trip to the hotel as soon as we can.
Great position, super walks, and dog friendly
Just returned from Oxwich Bay Hotel, the Hotel was not quite as good as I would have expected. Whilst our room was a good size (not in the main building, but one of the small cottages) the carpet had seen better days and was covered in stains and smelly. We had a dog, so maybe this is why it was given to us! The weather was superb so we left the window open all the time which helped, plus we were not in there very much. We felt the breakfast was excellent, but we were not in the usual dining room but in the bar area, due to the main dinning room being given over to a large party of school children, and the other dining area had a seminar running, seemed us general public came a poor third, when seating for breakfast, so this did mar it a little too. We felt other meals were over priced and poor, we only eat there once as a consequence, drinks were very pricy too. Not sure I would go there again.
Dog lovers - visit Wales
We live in Carmarthenshire and over the past five years have visited the hotel for either autumn or spring breaks. They run a 2 for 1 night rate from about October to March which is really good value for money. You can do D,B & B but to be honest you are as well just going for B & B. (Huge cooked breakfast) The food isn't cheap but up until this year has been of a really good standard. It seems to have slid a bit, not sure if the regular chef is doing less hours! Still, there's a varied menu with some unusual dishes as well as your regulars. By car there are plenty of other places to try in the area. The main reason I'm posting this is for those with 'man's best friend'! The hotel allows dogs at a small surcharge and on prior arrangement will allow two well behaved canines to stay with you at the same time. It's an ideal location with a huge beach (beware the cliff walk if your dog is not especially obedient) and as the beach is not council run, there are no summertime restrictions for dog walking on it. If your beloved likes a swim - its the safest beach on the Gower, tide wise etc.. Remember your 'poopa-scoop', bins are provided on the beach near to the car park. (Free parking if you are staying at the hotel). Some of the rooms are quite small, but the staff are helpful and when you book, tell them that you want one of the bigger rooms (at an extra charge). Pooches will need to be able to 'do stairs'! For a quick Gower break I can't recommend it enough, you are quite central to explore. One word of warning, if you walk off the beach be aware that there have been cases of 'dog-napping', we've never even seen anyone suspicious but are always vigilent. Hope this is of use to someone, any questions, let me know! We will be staying there again next week, so i'll try and add some photos.
Excellent food and views
I recently celebrated my 40th birthday with my boyfriend, parents and dog Iggy at Oxwich Bay Hotel. We found the hotel and staff very pleasant and the food excellent. We had a lovely view of the bay from our room and were able to have some superb walks in the surrounding area. I understand the hotel is very busy in the summer (the bar and restaurant are open to non-residents) but it was ideal for an out-of-season break.
